I know a lot of you dislike automatics, but.. (long post) Reply #15 – April 20, 2006, 04:47:44 PM Quote from: EricCoolCatsHonestly I don't see why others would have disagreed. If you can get a pre-rebuilt AOD with the 4R70W guts, with a converter, for about the cost of just an AOD redone, why would there be objections? More for the money is always the name of the game. You literally have nothing to lose...and sheesh, someone already did the work for you! What's not to love!? Yeah, what he said. :)I was going to type something up but Eric pretty much covered everything so, neh. As long as that ebayer has a good rep then it sounds like a good deal. Quote Selected
I know a lot of you dislike automatics, but.. (long post) Reply #16 – April 20, 2006, 06:10:45 PM Want the simple solution??? Keep the AOD and throw a LOCKUP 2400-2800 stall in it. Along with a decent shift kit, it will make you smile... IF the engine is going to have a aftermarket cam(nothing too wild, T/F Stage-1 for example)go with a 3000-3200, but stick with the lockup and your final ratio in O/D(no converter slippage) will remain the same. With the mods I mentioned a healthy AOD will live and give good service... Mine is in its 7th year... Quote Selected
I know a lot of you dislike automatics, but.. (long post) Reply #17 – April 20, 2006, 06:22:51 PM The thing is.. this transmission is already rebuilt, upgraded to 4R70W internals and gears, comes with a Baumann shift kit, and the converter. Swapping to it is no more difficult than dropping my current transmission to do anything to it and putting it back in when I'm done.. except in this case I wouldn't have to actually open up the transmission and do anything to it. Just because I put down a lot of words talking about gear ratios and such doesn't mean it's a needlessly complicated operation. :pRan the numbers on what the equivalent would be if I had the 4R70W gears and swapped to 3.55s eventually. Rounding to the nearest available rear gear ratio, this is how it stacks up against my current AOD/3.27s:AOD/3.27s: 3.27/3.27/3.27/3.2770W/3.27s: 3.90/3.55/3.27/3.2770W/3.55s: 4.10/3.73/3.55/3.55No reason this transmission wouldn't hold up better than the AOD with the upgraded internals. Why wouldn't I want to be able to launch as if I had 4.10s, but travel at highway speeds as if I had 3.55s? I know a lot of you dislike automatics, but.. (long post) Reply #18 – April 20, 2006, 07:47:57 PM OK, it's possible that this will either clear things up or make things much worse in here.. but I've whipped up a spreadsheet with the help of a tire size calculator (225/60R16s supposedly being 26.6" diameter) and the FordMuscle RPM calculator. The chart lists the three main configurations discussed here:- Transmission change, 3.55 rear gear swap.- Transmission change, keep stock 3.27s.- Keep the AOD, and the 3.27s. *current setup*- Keep the AOD, 3.55 rear gear swap.I may add more later. Anyway, I plugged in the tire size and the final drive ratios for groups of different speeds.. 5/15/25/35/45 mph in first gear, 15/25/35/45/55 mph in 2nd gear, 25/35/45/55/65 mph in 3rd gear, and 35/45/55/65/75 mph in OD. This doesn't account for any real-world changes to RPM for whatever reason.. this is strictly math. YMMV. Quote Selected
I know a lot of you dislike automatics, but.. (long post) Reply #19 – April 20, 2006, 09:11:52 PM By the way: Sorry if it seems like I'm harping on this a little bit by posting charts like that.. but I'm really confused any time anyone disagrees with the swap. Eric nailed it like a drunk nympho on Valentine's day with his summary of why this is a decent swap. Hopefully the chart shed some light on the differences, RPM-wise.. but even if they aren't mind-blowing, the upgraded internals are still a major factor in the decision. Quote Selected
I know a lot of you dislike automatics, but.. (long post) Reply #20 – April 20, 2006, 09:51:20 PM Well I was going to look into a beefed up AOD for my car when I get around to putting my 331 in it 5 years from now, but I think you just did that for me. I was looking at one on another site, but it was about 700 bucks more expensive, and didn't actually have some of the extra stuff in it. I think that it looks like a really good transmission, and since you're not going to be putting it behind some torque monster V8, then I think it'll work out perfectly. Quote Selected
I know a lot of you dislike automatics, but.. (long post) Reply #21 – April 20, 2006, 09:55:59 PM They claim it's good up to 600 horsepower. I don't know if that's the case, but I won't be anywhere near that. Like I said, I'm considering a single turbo/non-intercooled setup at best. Something that could run 6 PSI all day and night without being too complicated to fab up. Perhaps I'd go so far as to splurge on GT40Ps and a better intake. Better exhaust, of course. Other than that I'm not building some speed demon, just trying to wake up what's there. Quote Selected
I know a lot of you dislike automatics, but.. (long post) Reply #22 – April 21, 2006, 12:30:57 AM As usual Ben you are beating the topic to death. No matter what kinda question you ask someone is gona like it, and the next guy isn't. Your a smart enough guy, and it looks like you've figured it out already. Buy it. Quote Selected
