National Guard Specialist Wilfredo Urbina was killed Monday in a roadside bombing in Baghdad, Iraq.Urbina's family immigrated to New York from Peru, eventually settling in Baldwin about 10 years ago. During his life, he had already served in the Air Force and joined the National Guard to finish college. His family says his love of service brought him to the Baldwin Fire Department in 1998.Urbina's friends and fellow firefighters at Hose 4, Ladder 2 of the Baldwin Fire Department made flyers announcing Urbina's death in the line of duty. They then personally went up and down Grand Avenue, asking local stores and businesses to lower their flags to half-staff to honor "Air Force Willie."The 29-year-old soldier was driving a vehicle that came under attack by Iraqi insurgents. Urbina was killed in the same roadside attack that took the life of a New York City firefighter serving in the reserves. There is a video on there also, I dont know how to save it so if someone could pull it off and save it so I can have it I would be very thankful. Also heard that he was driving a desert storm speced HumVee that didnt have armor plating in the floor. With the armor, perhaps he would still be here. Why does the government do everything half assed? Quote Selected
