91 lincoln

Does anybody know for sure what transmission is in the 91 Linclon Town Car?  I would think it would be an AOD, but I don't realy know.  The lousy thing just went out and I think I need to replace it.  Also, does anybody know where I could get a very cheap rebuilt tranny?

Thanks
Andy

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Ok thanks for the sight it is a big help.  I think I might be a little confused, but the lincoln might be a 93 because I know it has the 4.6L

Its either the AOD-E or a 4R70. They went to the 4R sometime in 1991 or 1992, IIRC.

The towncars also got the 4.6 a bit earlier than the crown vic and grand marquis if I'm not mistaken.

1991 instead of 1992 for the Ford/Mercury. :)

Yup the Town Cars got the 4.6 in '91, also I'm 99.9% sure the '91 TC used the AOD and got the AODE in '92. The Crown Vic and Grand Marquis got the 4.6 in '92 with the AOD(I had one), in mid Feb they switched to the AODE.

This town car is actually my dad's car.  Thanks for the help.  so what I am gathering is: if the car is a 91 it probably has the regualar AOD, but if it is actually a 93 it probably has the 4R70.  He will be happy for the information.  This leads me to my next question:  What differences in the cases will I be able to see to make sure that I am actually getting the correct transmission and nobody is trying to screw me?

Thanks again
Andy

I don't know if this helps but on my AOD pan it says Automatic with overdrive and in big leters METRIC. I don't know if the pans for AOD's are the same as AODE's but my brothers 92 cougar's AOD has the exact same pan as my 87.

Good point the AOD under my cougar says that too.
