No Fuel

OK, here goes, I need help. I have an 86 Cougar, 3.8L. Pulling into the driveway it died, and is not getting fuel to the engine. The pump will work if hooked direct to a 12 volt source, the inertia switch checks out with continuity tester, and the fuel pump pins have continuity across them.
I am getting battery voltage for about 1 second at the pump plug when the key is turned on, and the fuel pump relay is activating when the key is switched on.

There is something very simple I am overlooking, any ideas as to what it is? It is driving me nuts.

Thanks
Mike

If the engine will run when when you jump 12v to the pump, there is a problen in the harness from the dist to the EEC or the EEC not sensing the ignition pulse. If it doesn't run with pump jumpered, problem is likely the TPS(throttle position sensor)(can shut down the injectors if the EEC thinks its at full throttle when cranking), or an ignition issue(TFI, PIP).

If there is no crank sensor, where does eec receive ignition pulse from? The reason I am asking is this just started right after I installed a water pump, about 20 minutes or so.
I can't help but think I bumped something or moved a wire that has come loose, everything was working fine till I put on the water pump.

The EEC gets its ignition pulses from the TFI module on the distributor. Think of the distributor as a primitive crank position sensor (in fact, in earlier 3.8 distributorless applications such as the 3.8 SC the crank position sensor is mounted in the distributor hole)

Ignition switch to "Run" (not Start) the fuel pump runs for one second and shuts off.
Ignition switch to "Start" , the fuel pump runs.
Ignition switch back to "Run" after engine starts, fuel pump continues to run.
Ignition switch back to "Run" after engine fails to start, fuel pump shuts off.
This is normal operation of the fuel pump.

problem happened after water pump change.,,,,

humm

check the connection at the TFI module at the dist.  also keep in mind that this module plugs into another device inside the dist called the pickup or stator assembly.

check the 6 wire connector and resnap it on.  also check the coolant temp sending unit is connected on the forward side of the intake near the area you were working.

some things you said that makes me not want to assume.........

you do know the fuel pump relay is in the trunk on the pass side?
you can ground out the smaller tan wire to make the pump run also,, this sort of relieves the eec from providing this ground for you automatically.

you did not mention if you have spark or not,,,,,,,,,, do you?

you can check to make sure the injectors are getting signals from the computer by usign a test light to ground on either one.  if the test light pulses,, teh eec is doing it job.
