another walmart crash Reply #3 – July 15, 2015, 01:02:11 PM theres several ways to go about this,, I am working with her directly to work out a deal so her insurance isn't jacked up.either way if I go insurance route, I will likely be making more $ on the deal at the expense of the other driver.trying to avoid that because I want to.If I go the insurance route, they will likely total the car because that's what they do best with older vehicles ,, then again they need to be able to explain off 5k in value average in damages. The wife doesn't want a vin / carfax report showing the car was a total in its life so ,, what they hell am I supposed to do?Nobody have to fix the car in the real world,, the insurance can refuse to repair, they can just cut me a check to total it.if it were my car,, id let the insurance just total it then I would get a paint job and a door fixed,, yet I know in my heart that's going about it kinda in a dishonest / opportunist way which I truly despise in people who do this to others all the time.my oldest boy slid on ice into the back of an S10 in 15mph traffic zone,, his trailer hitch totaled my sons 88sport front. Guy said no worries and he was not going to do anything cause he had no damage. they exchanged info,, my son limped back home ,,, and we finally fixed him up. since this happened around last fall, the S10 driver probably started doing some thinking and turned in a report. My insurance said they had to pay out 2790$ to the S10 driver. my insurance did indicate there was an investigation but its gone nowhere. I don't want to be "that guy", now that the ball is in my court. Quote Selected

Plus the insurance on the Thunderbird prohibits me from using it for daily driver things like shopping or going to work. Taking it to go out for ice cream with the wife is fine though as that's a "pleasure drive" in the insurance's eyes. I have collector insurance on the Thunderbird because if it ever getshiznit I know that it will either be fixed or I will get enough money to find a similar rust free/clean Fox Thunderbird and swap my parts over to it. another walmart crash Reply #6 – July 16, 2015, 03:01:32 AM Part of the reason i haven't put historic plates on my car. It restricts driving and has basically the same rules as collectors insurance. Quote Selected
another walmart crash Reply #7 – July 17, 2015, 10:40:58 AM we prefer to enjoy our cars normally, the 20th has way so many miles, the VW actually is rocking half the miles my 20th has Quote Selected

Like you, I am limited to the drives and mileage but that was the only way to fully protect me for the full value of the car. Quote Selected

another walmart crash Reply #12 – July 18, 2015, 08:53:55 AM Hagerty insurance FTW. Full coverage, agreed replacement value, and you can set the mileage allotment. Quote Selected
another walmart crash Reply #13 – July 18, 2015, 09:54:54 AM On my car, state minimums is plenty. I can drive 1000 miles a week on a busy week. Just straight to and from work 5 days a week is over 300 miles. Quote Selected
another walmart crash Reply #14 – July 18, 2015, 10:47:48 AM If you are not going to sell the car then who cares about the title saying its a total? I can understand some sentimental value thing but with older cars people typically don't give a shiznit if the car checks out and the damage was fixed properly. I would find a body shop and get an estimate with a replacement door, not fixing yours. Then put together what you think is a reasonable amount if you intend to fix it yourself and present both to the lady and if she balks then file the insurance claim. I tried this once and the guy was an insurance agent himself and he refused to pay what it cost to fix it right. He thought it would be a little bondo and blend the paint on the rear quarter. He even had the balls to tell me his insurance would never pay the claim. I told him I had full coverage and he could deal with the attorneys at State Farm. Needless to say his insurance paid up and my car was fixed. The other thing you need to do is find out what the car was worth prior to the hit as those little cars can pull some $$$.Darren Quote Selected
