1985 elan with 5.0 axod trans stuck in 1st gear until about 3000 rpms then hard shift any clues on what is  the fix

Probably the TV cable linkage. It might have come off the throttle body, or the lever on the transmission might be seized or sticking

Don't drive the car till you have checked this. It can burn up your transmission in just a few miles. My old crown vic had it come loose on my ex. In the 1/2 drive back from the gas station, it permanently started slipping after.
