still sounds sick 3.8 cfi

Sorry to start a new thread on the same subject but thought it was best to get all the info together.problem started with jerking at cruising speed and would cut out on idle now and again.in 200 miles has gone to hard start and running lumpy and cutting out on idle and throbs badly on gas I can not even move it as it stalls as soon as I put it in drive.both self test show pass.changed fuel filter, regulator and fuel pump new plug wires cap and rotor.cat is not blocked.all the plugs are sooted up and blowing lots of soot out the back and makes the floor go black in seconds.both injectors are working spraying fine and steady(I can see fuel building up on throttle plates pooling till it starts to drip passed the plates).think its getting way too much fuel checked injectors got 2.1 & 2.0 ohms also just disconnected the tps and ran a lot smoother.

can anyone confirm if the injectors are within range as have no info on this.had a good look at weekend and found coolant staining on the join between the intake manifold and the head on number 6 cylinder also have a little white smoke on idle and water dripping from exhaust lots on throttle.going to do a compression test this weekend will let you know how i got on.

On my sefi cars, a bad or broken vacuum line to the map sensor will make the car run badly. It will run rich and put black soot on the ground.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

No idea honestly, but it takes all of 5 seconds to make sure the hose is on properly.

VAC lines are OK.tested the map with a dvom
Map signal 2.5v with no vacum,no change when vacuum applied.
Map power 5v
Map ground 12v
According to my info the map signal voltage is too low should be more like 4.7v can anyone confirm this

The way it looks the map is telling the pcm its at about half throttle

The map sensor actually reports back in hz, rather then voltage. Here is a chart and testing info. http://sbftech.com/index.php?topic=19336.0

That's great info the only problem is my Meter doesn't have hz on it and they are about £20.the cost of a new map plus shipping is £25 if its not the map playing up at least I will have a spare.had bits of cat spat out the back today so opened the exhaust to see how bad the damage was and the honeycomb has all gone just an empty void.was thinking of decatting anyway but not what I had in mind.

looks like the head gasket has gone i have lots of air coming back into the expansion tank.tryed to do a compression test but the gauge would not thread up and could only get the push on type on number 1 (150psi).so do any of these block repair in a bottle actuly work or will it bite me in the arse later?.but to be honest i would rather get the heads off get them skimed and valves recut more work but a proper job.

I don't believe in a miracle in a bottle. If it can gum up your engine well enough to "fix" a head gasket, imagine what else it does to the car.

See if you can borrow a coolant pressure tester to be sure it is causing your problems.

just done the test and there are exhaust gases in the cooling system, tho this job will have to be done i dont uderstand how uplugging the tps  would make it idle alot better i had a golf with a head gasket with the same problem ran just fine just had to keep topping the coolant up.when the tps is unplugged does this put the pcm into limp home/default and why would it help as i am sure the head gasket is not the real problem.

Tps should be around 1v at idle with no dead spots through the throttle range. You can check it with the key on engine off.

What codes did you pullif able? What year is the car?

both test give 11 system pass.on the compression test i take it the threads on the spark plugs have a different picth not metric i think you use af (american fine) if you can confirm will order one from the states as i want to know if there is any problem with compression but again cant see how it runs alot better with the tps unplugged.
