93 cougar 5.0 cam

Well the time has come to upgrade the sports power output, I have been looking at doing an explorer 5.0 swap with a stock H.O. Cam and keeping it speed density.  I was looking in a local yard for low mileage explorer 5.0 but everything  was high mileage, 200k +.  I however found a low milage 93 cougar 5.0, 83k.  I plan on pulling the motor and trans together as it is an AOD, bonus!

Couple questions:  1st., Is the cam in the 93 cougar the same as the 93 cobra???  Second, is it possible to pull the engine and trans together or would it be easier to separate the two???

Thanks,
Owen

V8demon had a chart that had a bunch of stock cam specs, if i remember correctly, the 91-93 5.0 in the cougar birds is similar to the 93 cobra cam. Keep in mind, this is actually a smaller cam that was used with larger roller rockers in the 93 cobra.

The 91-93 cougar cam was slightly more tame in stock form. I wouldn't worry about it making much difference though.

I so wouldn't be afraid of a higher mileage roller cam. Inspect it for wear and scoring of course, but there really should be very little if any difference.

The 91-93 motor mounts are also similar to the stock 86-8) motor mounts and might bolt up.

Never pulled the engine on an mn12, but in a 86-88 you can pull engine and trans together.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

I forgot to mention that I will be using crane 1.7 rr found in the cobra as I have them setting on the shelf as well as tfs upgraded springs and will be using gt40p's.  Just wondering if the couger's cam would be better that a stock H.O. With the 1.7's  because I would not have to touch it, as it is already there?

It's the same as or a bit better than an HO cam....I'd leave it. I'd only take it out to put in something aftermarket, or an "alphabet" cam..

I may be wrong, but isn't the AOD on those year of cars controlled by the PCM? I'm not sure what the exact nuances and year to year changes were, so you might have to dig into some info..

No AOD is PCM controlled, you're thinking of AODE...

If quadrant has two drive positions it's a AOD, AODE has 1, 2 Drive with O/D lockout on shifter... AFAIK the AOD's last hoorah was in '93 Stangs , T-Bird, Cougar & some F/E-150... Full size models had AODE in mid '92, Lincolns with 4.6 as early as '91...

Right on. Thanks for the info...getting much past '88, my knowledge of transmissions is sketchy at best, aside from the M5- five speeds used in the 1/2 ton trucks...

I swear (and I may be wrong) but didn't some very early 4.6 Town Cars have the AOD? I may be confusing that with the fact that early 4.6 had the 302/351W bellhousing bolt pattern.

If the car in question is a '93 it will have an AOD-E.  Me personally?  I'd rebuild the AOD you have first.  Typical rebuild kit costs around $160.  You can go above and beyond that and go with a hardened input shaft, tweaked valve body, and upgraded overdrive servo.

Upgraded heads and intakes are plentiful on Ebay, assorted Mustang forums, and even here if you are patient.

89-93 Thunderbird/Cougar had the AOD
94-97 Thunderbird/Cougar had the 4R70W

The only 5.0 car to have an AOD-E was the 94-95 Mustang.

I should have known that...my buddy Steve had a '95 GT convertible that needed a trans...it was of course the AODE. We went nuts trying to find him a replacement. He sold the car to his brother, who simply swapped in a T5.

ed nice car, too, while I'm yakking about it. I almost bought it myself. Should've, now...for what he was asking, I could easily have put a T5 in myself, and made a tidy little profit. Oh well.

You're probably correct, those details are foggy these days...

I know the early '92 Crown Vic & Grand Marquis had the AOD, as I owned one(yes it used small block bolt pattern), AODs were only cast with the small block pattern... AODE/4R70W were built with modular and smallblock patterns...

I actually got this from Jeremy B on here years ago.  I just saved it in a place where I could access it easily.  Hopefully he has it still as well.
