Lock up or non-lock up??

I forgot whether or not the converter from the aod from 87 cougar is a lock up or non lock up??

Been dealing with too many different kinds of transmissions lately and I can't remember what's  what anymore...too many cars....

All factory AODs are lockup. The only non-lockup torque converters for AODs are aftermarket.

how built is the aod, how sticky are your tires gonna be, and approximate power range?

most built up aod are non lock up.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Probably little over 450 to wheels, little tires (10inch) and a stock aod with transgo shift kit and 5k governor. I am gonna go lock up if it fails then I will upgrade the guts to accept a non lock up 2500 stall aode converter I have sitting here. The blower is gonna be underdriven quite a bit.

I have a non-lockup in my Thunderbird. The engine will run about 400 more rpm at highway speeds than with a lockup converter so you’ll burn a bit more gas. A non-lockup converter will get you a bit more off the line and is stronger in that the transmission uses a one piece input shaft. The trans in my car is rated to 600 flywheel horsepower so it's way over built for my 325ish flywheel horsepower set up. It is fun though and being that the car is a toy/nice weather pleasure driver I'm not concerned about gas mileage.

Do you find that your light throttle upshifts are a little on the violent side? I have solid motor mounts and solid trans mount, when the thing shifts you definitely don't want an open beverage in the car. With the turbo kit at wide open the shifts seem to smooth out quite a bit, but when it was just a plain jane non so 302 I couldn't even get it to 5k rpm upshift until I got 3.73s. I am used to vehicles kicking like a mule when they shift, but my  wife and kid are not too into it:)

I wouldn't call the light throttle shift violent but they are noticeable. You can feel the transmission click into gear. Full throttle shifts are a bit more "violent" as the car will bark the tires 1-2 and on occasion 2-3 upshifts and really bang through the gears. 4-2 downshifts at WOT are pretty strong and bark the tires. The 4-2 downshift is pretty fun. My fiancé doesn't like it as it usually scares the bejesus out of her.
