We get all kinds at the dealership. Seems like if you take care of them they last. Some jackass always breaks ours. I'd look into Snap-on or some other major brand, as the internal battery can be replaced for, theoretically, unlimited lifespan. The ones we use have spade plugs on them which limits your 12 volt charge options. I'm sure the ones that take a barrel charger use a 12 volt output voltage which means you could make a hard-wired tip for it(I guess:dunno: ) Happy hunting!

If you have a port setup for it and it is wired permenently, it will go dead with the vehicle battery...

If you could set it to kick on with the key on position, then it would only charge while the car is running. But in the case of a bad alt, if you drove until the car died, it would also run your jump starter dead...

I know you want to buy american, but we got a cheepie from harbo freight. I'm impressed with it. I have used it more then I ever thought I would.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Ever think about making your own? It would be fairly easy to keep it light by using lipo batteries. I have a few that weigh under 6 ounces and can sustain over 90 amps. If you were to get a couple in parrelle then you could easy plut higher peak numbers then most comercial setups while weighing next to nothing.

Sounds like an interesting project...any specifics and estimate of cost? You would think the big guys would be all over something like this?

i would "Diode OR" protect the booster while its in the trunk.  that way it cant discharge out to the car if there is an issue.  it would run while the car is in accy pos,, charging only when the car is running... that way its always topped off.

good point on the faulty alternator simulation,,

Lipo's are still branded as unstable, dangerous, and explosive. I've yet to see one let go.

Biggest problem, the cost of charging said pack. Lipo's are extreamely voltage touchy. Get above 4.25v's per cell and they can puff up, discharge below 3v's per cell, and you have damaged your battery.

I just purchased two new 4000mah 3 cells (12.6v's fully charged) ratedat 30-40c for $27 each. Basically, output is 3-4 times capacity in amps. So 40 X 30 = 1200 watts of theoredicle sustained power output for a single 4000mah battery,  weighin 10-12oz's. Put two in parrellel and you have 1600 continuous and a peak of about 2400watts. 2400 divided by 12v's gives you 200amps. Yes, that is more then your fancy 3g alt upgrade, and it weighs just over a pound.

If you went with this setup as a "jump box", you could wire on charger with a parrelell adaptar to the batteries with a single 12v charger hooked up to the power on with a diode. Could probably fit it against the existing battery to keep it portable.

Mine is a combo 12/24 and has 2 battery's. Costs a big chunk of cash but it is always plugged in. Mine has to be on float charge according to the company. I dont know why?? But it ate up the charger and now i just charge it with a special battery charger. According to OPTIMA there battery's need a pulsing type which i have. Connecting it to the car with a blocking diode would work and that is ok. Always buy one with 2 battery's  not one. My unit in 12 volts puts the battery's in parallel of course. And in series for 24.
