Meh. Don't really need a tach - just shift when it stops pulling. After driving it for a bit you'll figure that point out just by the feel, and you'll know to upshift just before it happens. Few people that drive standards daily watch the tach while driving, it's all ears and ass. An SO 5.0 will pretty much smother itself before it spins itself apart (can't get enough air to rev high enough). About the only way you'd spin one apart would be to miss a shift or downshift into the wrong gear

I agree completely. But with no speedo, and no tach, I'm basically stuck with guessing speed or using gps for a speedo. I might just take my old kick stand phone case and sticky tape it to the dash to get me by. I'm really tempted to just run an aftermarket guage setup where this car just has the stupid base cluster. Not worth it for an anolog/digital swap. Plus I could just order the guage for a 99+ mustang for the speedo. Could always swap the 99+ dash cluster/dash or actually play with the electronics/speedo pickup to get it to read right. For now, I'm just gonna drive the shiznit out of it.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Ain't that the truth, even a stock HO falls on it's face around 5400, just wind it till she quits pullin' and grab another gear... RPMs are more limited by the wimpy valve springs vs air flow, my E6 headed '86 Stang with 5-speed would pull hard till around 5300 and lay down just like the E7 heads... What's fun is have a high revver with a good set of heads, my TW heads would pull hard all the way till the 6250 fuel cut off...

BTW congrats on a successful swap, sounds like you done good...

For max MPG, keep advancing the timing till it spark knocks at light throttle on the hills then back off slightly...

Thanks tom.

Initial mpg report... about 31.5 mpg with over 600lbs of tools and 75-85mph sustained, estimated.

No odometer till I get the speedo figured out. Google maps puts me at 480ish miles and 15.2 gallons put back in. I'm happy :).

had a t5 behind a 351 Cleveland in my 70 cougar , if you can drive and keep your clutch adjusted properly they are pretty  reliable, if your clutch is not adjusted you start grinding your scryo cogs thats when every one starts breaking gears, send all you got my way ill take them.

Nope, but that's a straight freeway run, nice and easy on the hills.

35mpg is hard to believe, I know of many people on forums with 5.0 SO's in their cars, and none of them have ever reported that high of an mpg. Most I ever saw with my old 5.0 SO was 28mpg, and that was on a mostly straight highway run, 55-70mph, no hills, and with me driving like granny the whole time. It was lucky to see all of 14mpg in stop and go city driving though. The engine was fully tuned up, and running like a top at the time too.

I averaged between 14 and 19mpg city when I was doing pizza delivery. The key is to not use any extra throttle or downshift on hills, or use cruise.

Best I was able to calculate over a tank of gas was about 36mpg. That was doing 55 mph following work trucks with a 55mph top speed over about 50 miles each was for about a week straight, I got 693 miles to that tank before filling up, but it was running on fumes. The digi dash calculated a bit lowed due to idle time.

Doing 65-75mph I averaged about 28, but could dip as low as 25 if I maintained the speed limit and I could get 30mpg consistantly by slowing down to about 62mph.

On the way to montana, I went from salt lake to butte montana on 3/4 tank. I put about 15 gallons back in, and I had some around town driving on that tank before I left. I can't calulate exact mileage because my odometer doesn't work, but gps put me at about 450 miles I believe. That was loaded down with about 600lbs worth of tools. I actually got pulled over for an "obstructed rear window" in idaho and searched for drugs because my rear was sagging so bad.

Having 2.73 gears and a light foot helps. On the way back I would guess I only got 25mpg but I had my foot in it trying to get home before midnight so I could work the next day in utah.

I shoot for about 550 miles when I fill up generally. If I could keep my foot out of it, I think I could do much better then that with the stick then I used to get out of my old bird with the aod.

I actually practice hypermiling occasionally, and have pulled down some freakish mpg figures from certain vehicles, but have never got that high with the 5.0 so. There is a guy on Lincolns Online with a Mark 7, that claims to have knocked out 32mpg with an SO in front of a T-5, which is the highest mpg I have ever seen anyone claim before yours. So, if your calculations are correct, then you truly have a Freak of Ford motor there, and I would hang onto that one. Because nobody else on the web that I've seen, is getting that high of an mpg with an 5.0 so.

I can't stay out of teh boost for long enough to see any real MPG outta my lil 2.3. I usually average around 12-15mpg. No idea how high it could really go with hypermilling, as I've never driven it even close to easy enough to find out, lol.

I can have a pretty heavy foot at times.

My last bird I could hit the same numbers. I do advance the timing a bit and do a tuneup, but nothing more then that.

My crown vic I can't get above 22mpg no matter how I drive it, but it does a better 16-19 in the city, so I drive around town in that a lot more then the freeway.
