Ranger help needed (SOLVED)

I didn't know where i should post this so I put it in here.
I have a 1999 Ranger 4x4, 4.0L, 5 speed automatic, 4.10 open rearend. 160000KM

I'm getting a little buck when accelerating or with a strain on the motor. It doesn't seem to be there when coasting. I was thinking that it was caused by a miss in the engine so I replaced the plugs, gas filter, air filter, and I thought I replaced the wires but now I'm not sure.

Gas mileage is down a bit but that may be explained by the new tires: more plys than stock - more rolling mass.

I still beleive it to be a spark problem but I'm starting to thing that it might be a bigger problem, slip or miss shift in the trans or a tooth gone in the rearend.

Better description of the buck; I could be going up a grade and get one buck or I could get 4 or 5 in a roll. The sensation kind of reminds me of when I use to play bumper tag and get a slight bump on the back bumper. I don't notice it when under hard acceleration.

I'm sure someone here knows about the 4.0L. All help/ideas are appreciated.

A buck/miss under load is usually ignition related, be sure the wires and cap are in good condition. The wires can be tested with a ohm meter, should be 5000-8000 ohms per foot. Also that you didn't crack a plug when they were installed.

Well, I still have this problem. I did change the wires last year to Boshe (sp?) but, to rule this out, I went to the dealer and got new wires.

I did a search online for known problems with the Ranger and found something like this: Engine miss; the problem is with the drive shaft and the solution is to change the DS. My first reaction was to call :bs:. With my experience with drive shafts, if there is a problem with the shaft it will cause a vibration. But then I thought that if the u-joint was sticking it could cause a bucking sensation.

What do you guys think? Could this be the cause of the problem. Should I invest in a couple u-joints? My 91 ranger had a carrier also. Should that be replaced too?

Edit: BTW the only part not changed in the ignition is the coil. The problem is also getting worst with time.

Unplug your EGR valve and take 'er for a spin. If it's sticking it can cause a buck just like the one you're describing.

If there was a prize, Tom would have won it :)

I removed the plugs and 2 plugs had hair line cracks down it's length. I wouldn't have noticed it other than for the soot from the arching. I replaced the plugs and the problem is now fixed.

Takes Bow....:D

Paul look at those plugs closely, are they cracked or burned??? If they are burned, you probably have bad boots on the wires and likely thet will burn again. I've seen this problem on my sisters old 2.8 Corsica and again on our 4.6 Grand Marquis...

I think they are diffinetly cracked. When I rub my finger nail across it I can feel it. I took a picture but it didn't come out very good. I think I was too close.

It does have a close up setting but the flash doesn't work with it so that won't work. It sure feels like they have cracks...the plugs that is, not the ones with the 38DDs. I have a 21" monitor at work but I wouldn't dare look at T-n-A there.

I'll keep this in mind if the truck ever starts to buck again but this is the second set of wires since this problem started. I replaced the OEM Motorcraft wires with boshe wires. I replaced them about a three months ago with more Motorcraft wires.

The one plug that looks fouled has a bit of carbon on one side but the other side looks good.
