So one of the salesmen at work (actually the sales manager) is in a bit of trouble. He's a bit of a tool (as all car salesmen are) and he recently convinced the dealership owner to hire his 16 year old son on to wash cars. This boy, Jake, is stupid, spoiled and lazy. I am generally tolerant of just about anything, but I mean, "STUPID". Whenever you ask him something or say something to him you can almost see the fuses blowing behind his eyes as he tries to process it. And by lazy I mean we always see him sitting cross legged in the parking lot texting when he should be washing cars.

Anyway, right around the time I bought my Sonata Jake's father bought him a brand hammer new Mazda 3 6-speed. His father also spent a buttload of money on new rims, low profile tires, tinted windows, stereo system, and covered the car in stickers. Not two weeks after he got the car, the kid hooked the front bumper on one of those concrete-filled steel tubes they put at drive-through windows (this particular tube was at work, protecting the entrance to the wash bay) and peeled it clean off. About $1200 later the car is all painted up and pretty again.

Yesterday the father came up to me and showed me a pic of a completely demolished, burned up car and asked "Recognise this?", and I said no - it was so demolished and burned it couldn't be recognised. I thought it was one of our customers' cars. Turns out it was Jake's brand new car (less than 2k miles on it). Apparently he was showing off to some friends on a twisty road in an upscale neighbourhood and lost it going around a curve. Unfortunately, at just this moment, there was a late 90's Dakota coming the other way. He hit the Dakota head on, spun around, went in the ditch, came back out and went in on the other side, and rolled the car over 10X before landing back on the road, at which point the car burst into flames.

By some miracle, all of the kids got out of the car. Sticking with miracles, the two people in the Dakota survived. There were no fatalities. Everyone involved received fairly serious injuries. All were hospitalized, except Jake, the 16 year old spoiled brat of a driver.

So all day yesterday and today we heard Steve (the father) making excuses for his son, even going so far as to try to blame the Dakota driver because his tires were weather cracked and the safety sticker was set to expire the end of August. We all told Steve he's an idiot, it was all Jake's fault, he should thank God nobody was killed or critically wounded, and he should punish Jake severely. Instead he was already talking about buying Jake a new car with the insurance money.

And there's where he is f*cked. He met with his insurance adjuster this afternoon and came back very upset. Turns out that when he bought the car he did not put his 16 year old son on the policy. Not even as an "Occasional driver". Not only that, his policy clearly states "Not covered when operated by persons under 25 years of age". Which means that the entire mess; the Mazda 3, the Dakota, any towing and firefighting costs, the ambulance rides, all of it, is not covered. And as the owner of the vehicle responsible for the mess, he, Steve, is liable for it all. Any lawsuits (and there will be lawsuits) will be his responsibility.

He is absolutely f*cked.

And his son is too. He is definitely going to be charged with operating without insurance, and Steve said police are probably going to charge him with dangerous driving, speeding, crossing the center line, and something about driving with others in the car after dark (part of our province's "graduated driver" program limits passengers for inexperienced drivers).

I only wish I could show those pics of that car. You can get a good idea, though, by crumpling a piece of paper and lighting it on fire, then stepping on it to put it out...

Serves both of them right. The father should have taught that spoiled kid a little responsibility before buying him a brand new ride, and well he is a total tool if he didn't put the boy on the insurance, shiznit, he's already in it for the car, wheels, tires and retard stickers, what'sa little more money for insurance....

One less mazda and dodge on the road... Just gotta look at the silver lining.

Seriously though, whats even worse is no one might ever get money from him because you cant get blood from a turnip.

If he'd (the dad) grown a sack and took the car after the kid peeled the front off...well, he mighta been better off.

Also goes to show how closely you should pay attention to paperwork (the insurance deal, I refer to).

And....who in the shag turns their 16 year old kid loose in a BRAND NEW car!?
And now he's already talking about doing it again!? I'll be double dipped in salty dog shiznit! Hopefully the kids loses his privilege to drive for a very long time.

The only positive thing I have: at least nobody was killed. Amen.

Hell. I don't know what it'd do. That's rough. The kid isn't covered so now the dad has to come up with money on his own to cover the other persons car... Too late to report it stolen too... :/

Beau: Everyone at the dealership, including the owner of the dealership, told Steve he was stupid for buying his son a brand new car. The owner even offered to give him one of our traded-in beaters. He declined - he insisted on brand new for his boy. Even after the wreck he justifies it by saying "If he'd been in an old Neon or cavalier he'd be dead". Which is fair enough, but if he'd been in an old beater there's a chance he wouldn't have been showing off, either...

Coliosis: The guy is not rich, but he's not suffering. He's got a newer Subarau thing, a nice house in a nice neighbourhood, a 31-foot boat, and of course he could afford to buy his son a new car. All of that could very well change once all this settles though...

And jpc647: That was my thought too - it's too late to say the kid took the car without permission.

I did find one thing out today though - the insurance company may be forced to pay the liability part by law - same as they'd have to pay if it had been an impaired incident. They even have to pay if somebody steals the car and kills someone with it. This means the Dakota people and the passengers in the car will be covered. Unfortunately for Steve, though, the insurance company has the right to sue him for anything they pay out. And they are not obligated to pay for the Mazda 3...

Yeah, they will probably pay the Dakota and sue Steve. I'm learning a lot about how liability and insurance works, dealing with the drunk that hit me.

I will say that people get what is coming to them. He made mistakes with insurance, his finances and his son. I don't mean to be "That Guy", but every penny he ends up paying, and the trouble he gets into was his fault. Teenagers are irresponsible, and his son doesn't sound one bit close to being anything but that. This world is full of idiots. My first car wasn't bought for me, and I still have it. I pay for everything and cherish it, and respect my possessions.

I highly doubt that. Some people will try stupid shiznit no matter what they're driving. And he sounds like one of those people...
