Thanks Dan. And sorry about your pictures thread being hyjacked by complainers. The whole idea of the random banners wasn't to showcase everybody's ride on the site.. it was to add more of a custom and refreshing touch to the board and to show the diversity of the cars that are on here. Eric has done a hell of a job with pairing the 50 or so (total of 100 cars) on his own free time. And let me tell you hacking the code of the forums to include some of my own code to make the random banners wasn't fun either. Eric and I just thought it would be a neat thing to have.. and for all those who would rather see it gone, too bad. It's staying!

Hey Baxo, it should not have been that difficult? You should have been able to simply add the random.php link inside the header of the template for each skin. vBulletin is quite modular and makes things like this fairly simple via templates. I'd think the real work was with the external php script!

On the subject of the banner and images, it really does add a nice touch. Unfortunately, it is hard to please everyone and when your car isn't showcased/exposed, it does create hard feelings.

well that's essentially what I did. I didn't say it was difficult. i just said it wasn't fun. When you don't necessarily have a test environment to get things right before you launch you have to be extra careful with what you do.

Hey Baxo, I previously deleted my message because I thought it may have sounded offending. But I did wonder if you did it differently to make it difficult. There's usually a few different ways to do anything; some "right" and "wrong" and the degree involved can vary.

Having a test environment is certainly nice to prevent being poked at if something done doesn't quite work or look right. vBulletin license allows (or did - I haven't recently checked) a customer to have a public environment as well as a seperate, locked-down/not public, environment for test purposes. However, I understand that with your previous provider, that may not have been an option because that would involved another database.

Instead of the above, for theme/style changes, you can create a mirrored template style based off your existing one, set it so that it's not public, and then you can make changes to that one so that you can see how it works. Setting it to not public will mean no user can select it, unless they're in the Administrator user group. If a mistake is made, it's just a Revert Template link away and no one else would see it.

But I would like to add an original comment I previously made. The banners up top do add a nice touch and was a nice addition over the previous banner.

Haha no problem. It's all good mind you i also wrote that code while i was at work therefore i didn't wanna get too involved with testing environments and what not. Just wanted to do it for the coolness factor. Everything you say completely makes sense. But like I said it was done under the radar on work hours.

You shouldn't have deleted that post haha it wasn't offensive. Trust me it takes a lot to offend me :)

I guess what my main point was that, effort was made on both my end and Eric's end for these banners and we're not about to remove it due to negative comments.
