87 TC 5.8 with a turbo and blow through carb

HI everyone I've read and read and gained allot of info from here. Ive swapped a 351w into a 87 turbo coupe that had a auto tranny. I hung the petals and put in a t5 that is for now the 5.8 is making close to 400hp and its allot of fun to go through the gears and I forget its only a t5 sometimes oops.  The question I have is has any one added a turbo to this combo Id love to see some pics and here some thoughts. it would be way cool to keep it a turbocoupe

Thanks
Westie

what compression pistons do you have? if it's a stock block/bottom end, you have to watch how much boost you push, or else it could end in disaster. i'm not 100% sure on this, but a few people told me you can push 550hp max on a stock block 351W without grenading it. other people have said as high as 700, that's why i'm not 100% sure.. but there is a hp limit

i'm boosting the 408 (351W) that's going in my capri, but i really can't give you any kind of info on how i'm setting it up.. as far as plumbing goes, yes.. but otherwise, no.. because i have an aftermarket block with forged pistons/rods/crank..

anyway, the way i'm plumbing mine is a pair of mid length headers that i'm customizing to clear the accessories and crossmember.. then a custom y-pipe to bolt to the headers and run to the 'inlet' side of the turbo. i'm running the turbo where the stock airbox is located on an EFI car with a custom 'cold air intake' that runs down through the fender well. the 'outlet' side of the turbo plumbing will run through a hole i punched in the rad support, to an intercooler and out another hole on the other side.. then up past the power steering pump to the carb

Here is a pic my car with the frt end off sevral years ago

Here is a pic of the car from under the under side when it was
 a single turbo setup

About the Windsor block HP rating.  The 84 model block made
675 to the wheels before the block split.

so you figure 600 would be a good safe zone, 650 if you want to run on the edge and 675 if you, too, would like to split a block hahah

that's a nice setup.. looks like you used mid length headers like i'm using.. how was your turbo plumbing run when it was a single? judging by what i can see from underneath, it's not a far cry from the setup i'm going for.. only major difference i see is you're injected and i'm going blow-through carb until i can get a F.A.S.T. or holley commander setup

just for the sake of knowing, what'd it run as a single?

Thanks Fast cat
The pics are great it looks like you turned the headers around and went to the turbo. when I did my swap I used BBk short tube headers and Chucks mounts when I dropped it in the header hit the steering column I used the shims that Chuck gave me and it clears now also the header has a offset just for the column. Did you have this problem on you build and if so was it a problem with the headers in backwards?

well if you keep the current setup you have, 8-10psi should be relatively easy on your motor, as long as you keep your RPM's from redlining. you would probably wind up pushing 500-550 tops, depending on your tune and such. the key thing you should look into is a custom grind cam. i was going to use an off the shelf cam, until i was suggested to use a custom grind

if you decide to go through with a custom grind cam, contact these guys.. i hear nothing but good things about them from members on SBFtech.. waiting to see how well my cam works before contacting them for my own ;)

check out Mike Sitar's website http://www.toohighpsi.com

Go down to his budget 351 TT setup, he also used a blow thru carb. He even tells what parts he had to use.

judging by that guys setup, it looks like my capri might be shooting into the low 10's or lower since i'm lighter, better setup and more boost with more drivetrain work :burnout:

but westie, you can take some notes from that page.. realistically, your best bet would be upgrading to forged pistons, because everyone gets greedy at some point with raising the boost.. me included.. hahaha
