Well as most of you have seen. i'm selling my stock car, and parts. The reason is simple lol i wish. Well i'm moving AGAIN this should be the last time for awhile ,and this place is further than what i want to travel every week to race. Number 2 and the most disturbing, my '00 f150 is starting to the bed. It blew out 2 spark plugs so i had the heads redone, then the intake cracked, replaced that, now it's leaking again and i have a knock in the lower end. 130k on the odometer. THIS IS THE SECOND modular v8 engine this has happened to.the first was my '01 crown vic p71.
my question is Did they fix the head problems with the '05 up 3valve engines? if they did i might consider another f150 with similar towing package.

also looking at f250-f350 power strokes 7.3 or 6.0, and also dodge 25-3500 with a hemi or 5.9 cummins. Saw what i thought was the ultimate rig, a '03 f250 4x4 6.0 diesel, with a 6spd man, supercab, 8ft bed dk green, 1 owner with 75k for 16k.

also been toying with the idea to rebuild the 5.4 with ported heads, better cams ect...what do you guys think?

the only good engine's for towing in the 1997 or newer truck's. are the power strokes 7.3 or 6.0, and 5.9 cummins.

That's what i've been thinking, the ol' 5.4 did ok but labored with a 3000lb car ,trailer, and equipment...Did pretty good with the chip *see mods below* ect. but nothing will touch a diesel. hoping i can find a 6spd when i'm ready in jan.

I've had two F-150's with the 5.4. I never really had any serious problems with them, but in a 1/2 ton truck they are pitiful compared to what the competition has. A GM 5.3 vortec will eat my 5.4 triton for breakfast. Plus the GM will get better mileage.

It is shame that a 4.6 4valve engine might work in the f150.

any head problems on new f150 5.4's? spark plugs break in the cylinder heads all the time in the new ones.

This article supersedes TSB 08-1-9 to update Vehicle Applications, Service Procedure and Part List.

ISSUE:
Some 2004-2008 F-150, 2006-2008 Mark LT, 2005-2008 F-Super Duty, Expedition, and Navigator, with 5.4L 3-V engine; 2005-2008 Mustang, 2006-2008 Explorer, Mountaineer, and 2007-2008 Explorer Sport Trac with 4.6L 3-V engine; 2005-2008 F-Super Duty, 2006-2008 and F-Stripped Chassis, with 6.8L 3-V engine may experience difficulty with spark plug removal. This may cause damage to the spark plug and leave part of the spark plug in the cylinder head. Affected engine build dates are as follows: 5.4L 3-V and 6.8L 3-V before 10/9/07, 4.6L 3-V before 11/30/07.

tsb right from ford. i work at a ford dealer just to confirm this.

other then that, a great truck, 4 wheel drive tends to have a few issues. but i live up north, rust screws everything up

I think most of the problem is that when the plugs get changed, people don't always use anti-seize. Then the next time you change plugs, it messes the threads up on the heads (since they are aluminum) and you are basically f'ed from there. I've also heard of people pulling plugs before the motor is fully cooled down and messing up the heads.

Like I said I've had two ('01 supercrew 4x4 and my current '99 supercab 4x4) and both have been pretty good trucks. I have had small annoying issues here and there (rear brake problems, axle bearing, leaking rear diff, rust in door seams, ball joints), but overall they have been reliable. My '99 only averages 14 mpg or so...but hey its 4x4 so what do you expect?

get the 6.0 with a stick. For about the same price as an H.O. swap you can get some good power out of them.

6.0 is the way to go plenty of power for towing. The 4.6 and 5.4 are only good for dressing up and making sound good!

actually guys the heads has been the only problem other than that it has been a real good truck. put 40k of towing,hauling, other random beatings on it...had 18-20 mpg on the highway before, usually gets around 14-16mpg on my everyday trips

stick ones are hard to find, the one i really want has one...the super duty diesel will last a hell of alot longer lmao

its not because of the changing of spark plugs without using never sieze. its usually when we have a miss fire of some sort and go to take the plugs out, they snap, steel plug + alluminum head= stupid ford design
