1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #1035 – December 29, 2013, 12:28:19 AM Heads are bolted on and torqued down. I had those things on and off at least 5 times on the passenger and twice on the drivers side. This would sure be easier on an engine stand!I took a couple pics of the clay job on the PTV clearance check. I did it twice on each head, the second time with no headgasket to double check. Milling .014-.015 is getting into the be careful range on TFS 170 heads.I am good to go, though. If I ever built an engine up from scratch I'd be sure to install head specific pistons right from the start. These are good if you have a stock bottom end and run a cam with not a lot of duration. The problem area is (almost) always above the right eyebrow just before the squish area. I measured it at .080 with no gasket and .115 with the gasket which is in the ballpark and consistent enough to trust. Gasket should be ~.040 compressed so I am getting at least .110 on the intake with .080 listed as the minimum. The exhaust was hardly making an impression. I didn't bother to measure it. 1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #1036 – December 30, 2013, 03:25:03 PM Heads ore on, lower intake is on, rockers are on and valve lash is set.Moving on to the turbo oil drain v 3.0 since the first one was getting hot and the second one leaked oil. I cut a clearance slot in the accessory bracket to get the line farther from the heat but allow a single line like in v 1.0. Quote Selected
1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #1037 – December 30, 2013, 03:30:39 PM Other changes are to plug the holes in the upper intake that were attached to the PCV valve since I plan to run the exhaust vacuum setup. This will give more clearance for the valve covers to the upper with the TFS heads.I also split the web between the port on the exhaust header that was having issues sealing and the rest of the manifold. I'm hoping this will allow enough float to get a tight seal and not work loose in the future. Quote Selected
1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #1038 – December 30, 2013, 10:21:29 PM Aw . The stock valve covers are going to take some serious grinding to fit over the rockers. I'm not going to deal with it. I did remove the baffle and do some grinding, but the drivers side ishiznitting, too. I'm just going to get the Trick Flow covers and know they will fit. I have to put breathers in either way, and that's enough screwing around on valve covers for me. I want to get this thing done. Tomorrow I'll get the covers and a new fill cap, then weld in the bung to the downpipe for the exhaust vacuum fitting. Then I just have to shorten the downpipe for better fit, sandblast and paint the hotside, install the new larger injectors, mount the radiator overflow bottle and make the breather setup to finish this off and be able to put it back together and fire it up. I'm still waiting for the catch can I ordered and for the injectors to arrive. Quote Selected

The Comp's might have. Those are TC 4 cyl injectors I had flowed and matched. 36# @ 39 psi, so 39 ish @42 psi. They are good to 400 HP, but not beyond at 85% duty in a boosted application by the charts. Now that the combo is getting well sorted I'm looking to get the parts in that I can take to the track. When I got the injectors back from the refurbish they were clean down to bare metal, so I shot 'em with some stuff I had laying around for rust protection. That's why they are Ricer Red.Well, off to Summit to take back pushrods I didn't use, the Ford nice VC gaskets (they don't seal on TFS VC's), and the Comp Cams rockers to exchange for TFS covers and gaskets. 1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #1041 – December 31, 2013, 01:58:15 PM Got to Summit and they SOLD OUT of ALL the TFS valve covers. Backordered a month.I had them pull the Proform Ford Racing and Summit $60.00 tall aluminum covers for me to look at. They looked and measured very similar in all ways. I took a chance and got the Proforms because the finish was a lot better. When I installed the stock VC's they cleared by a mile on the intake, so I hoped by using a 3/8" spacer on the upper I could use the tall covers.First check wasn't too good. The bosses for the vacuum lines at the back of the upper were holding the upper off by at least 1/4". I figured what the heck, and ground the bosses completely off, and cleaned up the entire area along the bottom of any casting bumps as well.I stuck the VC on and what do you know!! I got 1/8" of daylight with VC gaskets on but not snugged down! The only other issue would be hood clearance. I could see through the hood scoops that I was all clear over top, but not the IAC. I put a ribbon of clay over it and the hood cleared it also. So, I am going with these. Remember I have rotated the upper intake, so all bets are off on fitting these on a 'normal' car. I just took back another $450.00 of stuff and bought another $190.00.This ain't a cheap project. I just hope the wastegate can handle the increased flow now. I have my doubts. What do you guys think the red in the valve covers would look like if it was blue or white instead??Better, or just leave it alone?I'm leaning towards white. Quote Selected
1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #1045 – January 01, 2014, 03:17:40 PM Finalizing the new crankcase evacuation scheme. Vacuum limiter on drivers side cover.5/8" breather inlet/outlet with standoffs for clearance. These will be routed to a catch can which will be ported out the top to the vacuum venturi in exhaust downpipe after the O2 sensor.Waiting for catch can and injectors. The injectors have shipped, so next week I can have it back together. I can just stick a temporary breather in the drivers side until I get the can just to get it running. I will stick a tee in the line before the limit valve to monitor vacuum at the start. I can tape a gauge to the windshield and log some data on how well it works. I'm hoping it pulls vacuum at idle so I can forget about the PCV and leave it like this. I just have a fitting in the PCV hole that runs to the back breather.I think this will work fine. I have $40.00 into the Summit evac kit, $7.00 in the caps for oil fill on the passenger side and the chrome steel one I put a hole in on the drivers side, $12.00 for the valve, $40.00 in the catch can, and another $15.00 in random brass fittings from the hardware store. If it cures my oil smell, keeps the oil clean and keeps the engine bay from getting messy it's worth every penny.
