Shifting problems March 12, 2009, 11:20:39 PM I drove the cougar today and it is still shiifting oddly, It wants to shift really late, around 3500-4000 depending on what gear.. It is the three speed auto, 2.3 turbo, "86" btw. At first I thought it had to be the kickdown cable because this problem arose after I had the head off. Figured I just tweeked it with the removal of the intake or something. Shifted great before. Today I pulled the kick down completely off. It seems to make no difference. Now I did notice there was a little coil spring hanging off of the shift linkage down on the transmision. I cant see where it was supposed to be because it is all rusty and the spring is missing the other end completely. I figure that has to have something to do with it. I have checked for vacume leaks to the diaphram btw. Any ideas? Thanks for the help. Quote Selected
Shifting problems Reply #2 – March 18, 2009, 08:51:29 PM Why not replace the cable or spring and readjust the cable and see what happens? If it was fine before you took it off and now it is not, I would say that is the problem. I think people have ideas but are too scared to be wrong or something. I don't care if I am wrong, I won't suggest anything that would damage anything anyways. That my opinion for what its worth to ya!:DBrian Quote Selected
Shifting problems Reply #3 – March 18, 2009, 08:55:21 PM Well, it sound like you just need to buy a new cable or that spring setup and just re-adjust the tv cable. If it wasn't doing crazy things before you messed with it, thats probly it. Quote Selected
Shifting problems Reply #4 – March 18, 2009, 11:52:52 PM Does the 86 have a C3 tranny? The spring is probably needed to return it to the normal (not kick down ) position. You probable also have a vacuum line running down to a diaphragm on the tranny. Quote Selected

Shifting problems Reply #10 – March 21, 2009, 04:28:36 PM From the 84 shop manual, sorry no pic:"Kickdown Linkage Check:Check for wide open carburetor and linkage travel at full throttle. The carburetor full throttle stop must be contacted by the throttle linkage and there must be a slight amount of movement left in the downshift linkage.Be sure the downshift linkage return spring is connected and the downshift lever returns to a closed position"You will have to transpose the carburetor stuff to the EFI throttle stop.
