Picked up a new toy a few weeks ago

I've been doing a lot more playing lately, trying to pick the bass up at least once every night. If not the bass, the acoustic. I got my bass for a graduation present, and never had an amp of my own until about six years ago, when I was living in Edmonton (I always used my Dad's 15" Traynor Tube). My brother felt sorry for me and gave me his old practice amp. I only ever played in the garage against other practice amps at the time anyway, so it was perfect for me then. It was never supposed to have a bass playing through it though. This little Epiphone Studio 10, as in 10 watt. ;) 10 watts in an amp are very different from 10 watts in a car or home stereo, but still. I was slowly killing it.

My brother and his family recently moved home from Alberta (13 years) and he has a really nice 210 Peavey Valve King, so when we jam now I have to try to keep up with that level of sound. The Studio 10 is finally showing itself for what it really is. A PRACTICE amp. Hah!

I searched kijiji for a couple of weeks and picked this up near Halifax for $300 from a middle aged guy who's country band is retiring. It's already way over my head, but I asked him a lot of questions and he gave me some pretty good advice for how to set it up for different venues. It came with the roadie box, which is pretty handy, since the amp weighs over 100lbs and only has the trusty old single strap handle.

It's a Peavey TNT 130, with a 400 watt 15" Black Widow (kevlar impregnated cone, so it might even stop a bullet). :p The amp pushes 130 watts, but is a combo, so I can add another cabinet, and it also works as a cabinet for an external amp that can push up to 400. As it is, I haven't had it over 5 on the pre and post gain. It's really versatile, and can even be tuned for the shape of the space you're playing in. I've used many Peavey amps, and know they're practically indestructible. Reading reviews, people talk about doing things like dropping it down a flight of concrete steps, or leaving it outside in the rain overnight and never have a problem. Lots of bassists don't even have a backup amp, because they're so rock solid. It's pretty awesome. :hick:

Forgive the really messy shop. ;)

She was starting to pop when I shut it off, and distorted really easy when I had it loud enough to be heard over the valve king. This is almost retirement for the poor thing. It's still good for kitchen parties, though, when most people are playing acoustics.

Thanks. If there was one thing in my life I referred to as 'my precious', it's the Jazz.

I have two brothers and a sister, and when each of us graduated we got a piece of equipment. Jimmie (oldest) got an American Strat, Troy got an 8 channel Peavey mixer/amp (he used to do dances), I got the Jazz, and my Ivy got a top line Yamaha acoustic that plays so smoothly and has really nice details. I plan to do the same for my kids. In my opinion, I'd rather my kids know how to play and sing than be involved in sports. They can if they want, I did, but music won't cost nearly as much as hockey gear and people treat you like royalty at parties when you join in on the jam. ;) You can do well socially without being a jock.

I was never really into sports just music and cars. I too am a bassist and got a Fender Precision bass when i graduated. I soon after put Seymour Duncan pickups on it to sound better. Way to choose Fender, the guitars of the best musicians!

Right on. I've never played a P Bass, but my dad has one of the last runs of Mustangs made from the 70's. One thing I have yet to see on another bass is the factory thumb rest. All black with a black pick guard with a white stripe. It still lives in a tweed case with orange crushed velvet inside. :D Now that's authentic 70's Fender. Hahah!

Any pics of your Precision?

Yeah I'll have to see if I can get the wife's camera fired up. I've neglected my guitar time the past few months but when I do play I play all by ear (Can't read music) I never had a lesson and had to teach myself. I'll see if I can get some pictures of it!

Even though I can read music (spent a few years playing in the school band on the Baritone BC), I still predominantly play by ear. I have my old Altec Lansing PC 5.1 system scattered around the room (you can see one of the satalites on the wall in the first pic), so I just plug in the iPod and turn down the sub so I can hear myself play. It's the best kind of practice, if you play a lot of jams. That way when someone strikes up a new riff, you can jump in.

Its a bad pic from my cell phone, but I love this guitar. I'm not much of a fan with the color choice NOW but I have been thinking about getting a pearl pickguard to wake up the drab color. Nothing special yours is MUCH nicer. Hey, I just noticed that its a Squier wow I feel like a complete tool.

There's nothing wrong with a Squire. To be fair, mine is a Mexican Jazz, not American. I've played Squire Strats, and the only difference I could really feel was the size. It's a nice bass, and as long as you love it and it makes good sounds, don't pay any attention to the extra name on the head. The neck seems as narrow as my Jazz at the top. I'm so used to that neck that a standard bass of any kind feels like a tank in my hands. ;)

My bass isn't any smaller like the Squier electric guitars are. I've had this for a long time and have loved it. Over time i've played many a bass and decided i dont like any other bass' action compared to a Fender. I like the feel and the design. I usually play with ernie ball strings but to each his own I suppose.

X2 man, I play the 6 string and I've never had a lesson. Can't read music. I play through a 40 watt Crate BFX, it's a bass amp lol. It sounds good though.
