Higher octane fuel burns slower...slower flame front propagation, that's why the higher the compression ratio or with added timing, you'll need to run higher octane. These cars were meant to run on 87...I ran 100 octane in my old 'Bird with the HO motor and 14* timing...like you described, ran like ....FWIW...I did NOT want to run 100 octane, but I made more passes that night than I thought and it didn't look like I was going to make it very far on what I had left in the tank. HO motors will run okay on 93 and 94, but that's because they have more compression than the SO.
