The brakes/shocks/struts/springs/rear update thread.

I finally decided that I wanted to see the front end on my car come down a little bit after taking 200 pounds off the front end.  I also decided I wanted to stop better as well and that while I was at it a rear gear swap and some new shocks and struts.....

A certain mystery part is in the mail too, but I won't be installing THAT until February......

Yeah, I went nuts
:hick:

Most of the stuff is with the car right now and not at my house.  My friend owns a shop and I don't have the patience for the rear so he's swapping the gears out.

3.45's, nothing nuts and only a step above what I had , but I figured what the hell give it a little more and I really don't wanna run 3.73's in this car.

Moog springs -- #8598 up front and #8599 rear

Bilstein struts/shocks for a Fox stang used in conjunction with the ChuckW rear shock mounts.

And last, but not least.......

11" brake kit with 73 mm calipers/pads

The kit came with the SVO master cylinder 1 1/8" bore.

Should help with the pedal feel.

If you are just swapping the 73mm fronts and keeping the rear drums, that 1-1/8" bore MC is not my first choice.

It will make for a very hard pedal, at least in my experience.

They're 10's in the rear and the plan is to stay 4 lug and keep the drums...

When you say "hard" I ask "how hard"?
Your thoughts?

As in I wouldn't personally ever use that set-up on one of my cars.

I like the 1" bore MC for the 73mm front/drum rear set-up.

An application for that is an '80 Lincoln Mk6.

You may need to change fittings at the MC as they are different yet still over the SVO one.

The pedal with the SVO MC and rear drums is just way too hard IMO and doesn't allow for good modulation.

Interesting.....
You wouldn't happen to know part #'s would you?

In the meantime do you foresee any issue in using the stock MC?

It's a pretty easy look-up on any of the parts sites.  It's been a couple years since I've had to buy one.

Your stock MC won't have enough capacity to be used.  You will have a LOOONG pedal.

I know SSBC specs that MC, but honestly I don't know why in conjuction with the rear drums.  I've used it and it sucked and was much happier with the 1" bore one.  It's probably now more a case of it and "old" conversion and no one really cares.

Fair enough.  Thanks;)

Also the Lincoln one you mentioned....2 or 3 port?

It's just like the one they sent you aside from the fact that it's 1" bore and the threading on the ports is a little different.

What are you using for a prop valve? (I can't see the pictures from work, so it may be in plain sight for others)

With the 1" bore MC, I used the stock prop block with good results.

FWIW, the stocker has metric threads

I just realized something else as well.  Am I blind or is there nowhere to put the brake light switch wiring for low fluid on the other 2?  I see none in any pictures and didn't notice it on the one I got...

This affirms it:  http://mjbobbitt.home.comcast.net/~mjbobbitt/mustang/mc.html

Here is a more specific information on the master cylinders mentioned:

'84-86 SVO - (SAE Threads) 1 1/8" bore, old style aluminum reservoir unit. no low fluid sensor. This is the same as the 84-90 Lincoln Mark 7. The difference is usually the SVO is aluminum, and the Lincoln can be a cast iron unit. The aluminum is what you want to keep the weight down.

'85 Towncar - (SAE Threads) 1" bore, old style aluminum reservoir unit.  no low fluid sensor.

'93 Cobra - (metric threads) 1.00" bore

'94-95 GT/V6 - (metric threads) 1 1/16" bore, stock plug in for the low fluid sensor

'94-98 V6 - (metric threads) 1 1/16" bore, stock plug in for the low fluid sensor

'94-95 Cobra - (metric threads) 15/16" bore, stock plug in for low fluid sensor. Ports are reversed thread sizes from 87-95 LX/V6/GT

'99 V6 - (metric threads) 1.000" and 1.006" bore. Can be converted to work for the low fluid sensor on the fox3 cars

Now, according to Coolcats, the 87-88 MC's have a one inch bore, but everything else I find shows a 21mm bore ~ .825"

I haven't pulled it off.  The car isn't here.  Which is it?

Also, according to Coolcats the 94-95 Mustang Non-ABS seems to be a good fit.....1 1/16" bore, metric thread, and provisions for the low brake fluid wires (something I'd like to keep--just in case).

What will happen iif I run with a unit with no provision for the wires?  Permanent brake light?  No light at all?

Thoughts?

Car is back together.

Some observations....

The #8598 Moog springs I chose for the front were the absolute perfect choice for what I wanted. 1 1/2" from the tire to the fender.  Found the absolute worst pothole I could think of on a parkway nearby and deliberately stormed the left side of the car directly over it.  Quick rebound, yet non-obtrusive.  No rubbing whatsoever.

Overall I'm VERY pleased with the suspension.:burnout:
With that and the gear upgrade it's become very evident just how badly I'll need DR's come next track run.  Exits out of corners are MUCH more thrilling and even more controllable than in the Mustang.

Brakes are in.  Still running the stock MC right now (awaiting the SN-95).  Pedal feel was surprisingly not much different.  The first 1/2" of pedal is dead.  After that it's just as before.  I was expecting a more drastic change in that regard.  It's driveable and I gave it a few panic stops in an empty parking lot.  Nothing out of the ordinary.  No dive.  I'm gonna try the Sn-95 MC with the stock prop valve and see how that goes...I'd like a bit more gusto and a little less sponge.

Anybody want an SVO master cylinder and adapter lines? :hick:

Also I went with braided lines.  I knew the right side required an adapter from reading other peoples experiences here.  My car required an adapter on BOTH sides...

Pics to come. ;)

That stock MC has got to go that is why you get that no dive on brake check. I haven't went through many MC but my stock was OK then I upgraded it to one form an 86 Crown Vic. I do believe it is 1" bore. What a major difference Almost to stiff in the current setup. But the SVO I mean lincoln Mrk7 rotors and calipers along with my mustang spindles it will me much better. But even with the stock brakes and the larger Mc Much better. Any why all the waiting on parts unless its for funds. Isn't there a local parts store. I know I would be pissed to open my SSBC box and find A1 Cardone ramaned parts in the box. At least that is what they look like in the pics. Same reman paint/stamp as I see everyday at work.
