Failed emmissions test... BAD June 13, 2008, 07:51:54 PM Anyone ever had a TC fail the emmisions test with catastrophic readings? The dude told me my EGR system needs work, although I can watch the piston operate, usual tune up, and cats too. I cannot believe it! My car runs so smooth and almost perfect like with the exception of the spark knocking, and sometimes it feels like it rerally lags off the line. He told me that it's possible that my timing belt slipped a tooth. Hmmm, makes me wonder.. Quote Selected
Failed emmissions test... BAD Reply #1 – June 13, 2008, 08:53:52 PM set the timing to the stock specs, clean airfilter,FULL tuneup, clean the throttle body and change the pcv.if the car still has the stock cat it probly wouldnt hurt to change it either. Quote Selected
Failed emmissions test... BAD Reply #2 – June 17, 2008, 05:54:26 PM Well, I replaced plugs, wire set and cap and rotor.. Funny.. I should have looked at this before. The distrib was loose and the timing was set to 25 deg BTDC. hehe.. (and yes I removed the spout connector) Well brought it back to spec and noticed the pinging and the foul odor along with the bogging gone. But the py thing now is that my car is considered a gross polluter and can only be smogged at a test only station so I blew 70 bucks the first time and gave my car a bad rep.. Gotta love California... Quote Selected
Failed emmissions test... BAD Reply #3 – June 19, 2008, 10:43:44 PM So Jcassidy's thread states about the O2 sensor readings with a meter set to AC voltage. I this is true for the 88 Turbo Coupe O2 sensor as well, my readings are seeming to be off. Instead of .4 or .5 volts at idle, I get .04 and .05 AC. Is this right?BTW, I noticed now that I brought my car into the right timing, I barely have any high end, when I gun it in like 2nd, the turbo spools and around 3500 up, feels like nothings there. At an idle the car feels rough and the cooling fan stays on more than it's brief moments of being off, and it's like 75 to 80 degrees outside. I did a full tuneup using motorcraft platinuim plugs and the emmissions still smell funky like its rich. I replaced the ECT sensoron top of the manifold, TPS, and cleaned the hell out of the throttle body and the vane airflow so it dont think it can be that, but my temp sensor that controls the guage on the dash semms to not work most of the time. Does this give the ECM any info, or is the one wire sensor just for the guage itself and nothing else? I performed a self test and it passed. When the coolant temp guage does work, the engine runs right above the blue line and it doesnt seem to overheat. Quote Selected

Failed emmissions test... BAD Reply #5 – June 30, 2008, 07:26:56 PM Well all is replaced that I can think of except the cat. What I have noticed is that under a load the tach starts to jump around. I thought it could be the TFI so I replaced it. Still does it. And the car still seems to lean out in the higher RPM's too. Im stumped. No codes, and not overheating. Just seems to have a lack of umph. Quote Selected

Failed emmissions test... BAD Reply #7 – July 03, 2008, 09:33:13 PM If the catalytic converter is bad, would this still cause fuel vapor to come out the tailpipe, no power, and cutting out in left turns? I can see grey smoke in the sun, it's very light but notacable, in the shade I cannot see anything. I have seen cats out before and ordered a new one waiting for it to come in. The exhaust still smells of rich fuel odor too.. As of now, I have replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor,TPS,TFI,ECT,fuel filter, took pump out and cleaned strainer and replaced the py hose that goes from the pump motor to the pipe, timed to 10 btdc, and adjusted tps to spec. What im worried about is if the car is still running rich I dont wanna blow up the new cat. What's your guys take? Quote Selected

Failed emmissions test... BAD Reply #10 – July 10, 2008, 05:38:45 PM Im done,..,!!!! I hate blowin $$$ on it! It failed again. Put on a new cat this time. In this tax loving state of ours the control the smog system here is strict, my car failed on the dyno at 15mph on the HC's. 25 mph passed. Apparantly im cursed and iv'e repaced everything I can think of! (besides the engine itself). Anyone have idea's before it sees the bottom of a cliff?New plugs,wireset,cap,rotoro2 sensorcatalytic converterTFIECTTPSFuel filterAir filterPCV valveAir breathercode 11 passvacuum lines seem ok and EGR operational. Thanks Quote Selected
Failed emmissions test... BAD Reply #11 – July 10, 2008, 07:37:47 PM How much you spent??? CA has a exemption if over a certain amount has been spent and it still fails... Quote Selected
Failed emmissions test... BAD Reply #12 – July 11, 2008, 12:25:23 AM I know. I dont qualify unfortunantly, I make too much. But I think im goin g to replace the fuel pres regulator, and injectors. Quote Selected
Failed emmissions test... BAD Reply #13 – July 11, 2008, 08:33:20 AM Excessive FP will cause one to be rich at low speed and I did have a TC with that problem... I'd get a FP gage and check pressure before replacing anything though... Quote Selected
Failed emmissions test... BAD Reply #14 – July 16, 2008, 10:14:06 PM Well this week so far I repalced the furl pressure regulator and had my suspisions on the air charge temp sensor. Replaced.. Now I think ill replace the map too. Oh yeah BTW, where the heck is the knock sensor located on the tc? Think ill replace it too, it may be bad due to me getting the code that if engine doesnt ping ignore knock sensor because its not detected. Quote Selected
