GTP-40 head help!

Well, I talked to my friend with the Cobra "R" and he confirmed that the cylinder heads on the '93 & '95 Cobra "R" Mustangs are standard production GT-40 cast iron heads. The same heads as the regular production Mustang Cobra with 1.84 & 1.54 intake & exhaust valves.

Engines with "P" heads did not start production till 11/6/96. As all 96 Explorers and very early 97 Explorer/Mountaineer had standard GT40 heads with 1.54 exh valves and 3 hash marks with 65-66cc chambers.  The same head as the Cobra, but the Cobra heads had the thermactor passage drilled and were milled 0.030 for 61cc chambers.  The "R" used the Lightning head which had 1/2 head bolts and not milled for 65.5cc chambers.  The P heads were never planned for a Mustang, as they did not start on them until after the last run of push rod Mustangs were being built.  The P was made to keep the Explorers clean into at least the 2000 model year, as the standard headed ones were only clean enough to meet 98 standards.

So what's the better head technically, the GT-40 or the P?

The GT-40 "P" head is a production cast iron Explorer/Mountaineer head only. It was designed specifically for this application only and was utilized "ONLY" on this application. The head design is the FORD answer to the Vortec head. The design is similar to the GT-40 as it fits a small block and has a 1.84 intake valve but that is it. The "P" head is the highest flowing production head made just for the 302. (with exception of the BOSS/Cleveland head). 400hp is easily attained with good exhaust and intake systems.
The GT-40 head was utilized on early Explorers and Mountaineers but also used in the GT-40 packages from Ford, Cobra R cars, and Ford Lightnings. These heads flow well compared to the E7TE on the HO motor but, would fall short when compared to the "P" head.
HEADERS, I have a set of the headers from FRPP and they will not fit your Thunderbird without complete mutilation of the drivers side motor mount. I eliminated the hydro/rubber damper and fabricted a solid motor mount. You can change your K member to the mustang style and utilize their headers and motor mounts. :birdsmily:

Or I could just *dimple* the lower tube. I plan on doing that. I'm not too worried about the flow being down as I'm not building an all out race engine or anything.

As by *dimple*, you must mean smash it flat. That header will not fit what so ever after dimpleing it. I tried and had to modify the motor mount. I am not leading you astray. The header will NOT fit a T-Bird without modifying the motor mount and removing the rubber mount. GOOD LUCK.... I hope that it fits better for you.

I can be wrong I don’t know this for a fact other than I read I in one of my 5.0 books which I recall it stating only the 95 cobra-R came w/the 'P's but it wouldn’t be the first time I read bad info from a book.
