aod won't shift right into overdrive @ wot

What's up,

 Here's the problem: My 88 t-bird doesn't seem like it wants to go into overdrive at wot. From a dead stop, 1st gear rips the tires, shift to 2nd ok at around 5k, 2-3 shift firm almost chirps the tires, then it stays in 3rd to 5k and like stays there. I try another run and back out of the throttle when 3rd gets to 5k and it upshifts to 4th. The rpms drop to maybe 4K  and when I get back into the throttle it downshifts to 3rd.:mad:

Maybe I'm not used to an overdrive gear but, it shure doesn't feel right.  I've installed a tci shift kit and it shifts much better but I don't really remember how it shifted before at 3-4.

I do have a transgo shift kit which I might be able to install in addition to the tci kit.

Does any one think installing a governor rev kit would help?

I appeciate any insight or advise anyone can give.

i think the general rule of thumb is "it will NEVER shift into OD at full throttle" i just am pretty sure ive heard that before. you must let off the gas a little or it just wont go in. if you floor it again it will pull the kickdown cable and downshift again. no way around that.

yea, I was about to say.. it shifts into 2nd when you mash on it.. and doesnt go into OD until you let off.

eh, OD is kinda wierd.  you have to be at a certain speed so when go WOT it doesnt downshift.  when i go OD when im goin WOT im goin pretty  fast and im sliding the gas to the floor till it doesnt go any further. b/c after 3rd it seems to work the power band a bit better to ease it.  try when you drive around town to make it apear your driving a manual by at every shift point letting off completely, then getting back on it.  you'll see the car seems to actually like it.

Aod's where built that way,they cannot handle the torque at wot in od,it will break the input shaft.
Again,normal condition and no way around it.
There are some shiftkits and valvebodies available to change this but they WILL break the input shaft.

I got it:D  the nature of the beast and I just need to get used to the way 3-4 shifts. This vehicle won't be babied though and if it breaks stuff in the sacrifice of more power so be it :evilgrin:

I have a TransGo shift kit and governor kit installed in my AOD.  I would trade your staying in third, as mine will shift at 5500, 1 to 2, 2 to 3 but at 4800 in third it shifts to OD and crosses the 1/4 mile at 4400 in OD.  This is in a 83 'Bird with a junk yard '89 '5.0L and 4.1 gears.  These are all flat on the floor automatic upshifts.  The TransGo kit is credited with saving the trans as it started life behind a 232 ci six!  The trans shop that installed the kit and a 2800 convertor is still waiting for me to blow it up.  So far so good.  The one thing I do is, set the T/V rod linkage per specification.  This is checked twice a year and set real close to the shop manual tolerances.  Trans kit was installed about 350 runs ago and all's well.  You might double check you T/V adjustment.    Good luck,  Fred
