Vibration Issue

I got my new T5 installed in my '88 sport coupe which originally had an AOD. While doing the conversion I also installed a 12 lb aluminum flywheel and installed the appropriate weight (don't remember what the oz rating was). The problem now is I just fired it up and I have a terrible vibration issue. It gradually gets more pr0nounced I say about 2,500 rpm's and gets worse from there. I think it has to be a balance issue issue. Does anybody have any advice on what to do?

Is the weight in the same place as the old fly wheel? I would assume that the flywheel is keyed. Make sure its the origonal engine. If its an older one, try the 28oz weight?

Generally, you would want to ballance the entire rotating assembly, including the flywheel to begin with.

How hard was the trans to put it? You used the right piolt bearing? Does it only do it in gear, or always?

Have you checked your oil filter...

There's only one place to put the weight and the two weights I had to choose from were the 28 oz and 50 oz weights. I went with the 50 oz one. The engine is an original 5.0 liter standard output. The only mods I've done were headman shorty's and removed the smog pump and accompanying pluming (EGR system and plugged the back of the engine blocks). I'd rather not drop the transmission again but if I know swapping the 50 oz for a 28 oz weight will for sure fix the problem I'll do it because I have to.

Another thought. The XTO flywheel I'm using is for a Mustang GT which would be the High Output 5.0 as apposed to my Standard Output 5.0. I know the engines are different and am wondering if that is and always will cause a balancing issue for me. If so, is there a way I rectify that and use the aluminum flywheel or do I just need to get an OEM flywheel, and if an OEM, what kind? I'm guessing I need to find out what the flywheel was for Standard Output 5.0 Mustang if they ever made such a car with a manual transmission since Ford never made a 5.0 manual T-Bird.

The care vibrates when it sits idling. It needs an exhaust system and an alignment so I wont be getting it out on the road and besides I don't need to know I have a vibration issue. It has to be in the engine or transmission and the engine was fine before swapping the transmission. I'm just not sure what to do at this point short of taking it to a transmission shop.

All 81 and up 5.0/302s are 50 oz imbalance factor engines, whether they are HOs or not. My guess is that the flywheel you have is a 28oz imbalance.
