ignition key mechanism loose

Hello- Merry Christmas.    1986 Cougar.  A while ago i noticed the key/mechanism doesn't stay tightly in the on position.  was not a problem until now.  It has gotten to the point, now,  where if i tap the mechanism or inadvertently graze it while shifting gears,  the engine shuts down.  Starts and runs fine-  but i have to be careful about touching the key / mechanism while driving.  Can this be tightened?  thanks.

It's probably the ignition switch. It's not likely the key cylinder. The ignition switch is under the steering column cover on the right side.It looks like a little rectangle box. They are fairly cheap at any parts store. Some say stay with genuine Ford part, but mine from Autozone has held up great for 3 years now. Here's a picture of one.......
