Help for a newbie

Having just been informed that the short block in my 88 TC is about $900 from being usable, I'm looking at finding a used running motor.  Will a 1986 bolt in?  I believe that the turbochargers are different.  Anything else I need to be aware of?  I'm half tempted to do the V8 thing, but I don't have a lot of $.  Any help would be appreciated.

I would imagine that there isnt a whole lot of diffrences between the actual blocks, however, what exactly is wrong with your block now?

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

The turbo would be an upgrade. T-3 over the stock IHI. You will have to elongate the holes on the downpipe to get it to fit on your stock exhaust. Also the oil return line is specific to the turbo.

You can use the 86 longblock at least. Then use all your 88 engine goodies, fire it up and roll out. :)

No worries dude. The 86 should bolt right in with a few changes like Ether stated.  But a few he didn't check the fuel injectors you want the bigger brown top ones. Then you would want to keep the intercooler also. Not sure witch one is better but the 88 upper intake is shorter so you have to use the 88 valve cover with it.  Also the 86 probbly has V-belt setup. Keep the 88 alt. The 88 exhust manifold should be a E6 and the 86 E3 I think the E6 better flow and stronger so it doesn't crack like the others. Keep the 86 oil return line just clean it out real good.  Other than that I've been running a junkyard bottom end for 2yrs now and its and everyday driver, and I wrap the snot out of it almost every take off. That is with 15pi boost. I just swapped to a N/A rebuilt head about 3mos ago because the turbo head needed new valves seals.
