Turbo Coupe tranny problem July 20, 2008, 08:12:18 PM After reinstalling my 1987 a4ld transmission there is a problem. When I first tried to drive away nothing happened, but reverse was right there. Now its not.. It takes a little fooling around with to get the gears to come. I seem to have to punch it to get the car to engage into gear. If i punch it to like 2500 rpm the car will engage into gear. But when I first put it in reverse I didn't have to punch it. Anyone know anything about transmissions? Any suggestions? The problems seems to get worse as the engine gets hotter and hotter. I know the fluid level is full, because a whole case of bottles went into it. i even dumped in the extra two just to be sure. Before the front seal, pump seal, and pump bushing were replaced due to a substantial leak, the car shifted just fine, when it had fluid in it.Any help would be great. All the tranny places want to at least drop the pan and look. Some want me to remove the tranny and have it overhauled. I'm kinda hoping maybe this could be a simple solution. Quote Selected

Turbo Coupe tranny problem Reply #3 – July 22, 2008, 11:26:46 AM I had something similar happen to me. I have a '91 Mustang with an AOD. Now, I don't know what your particular situation was, but I was notorious for not changing the fluid on a regular basis. So, one day the seals began to leak and I took it in to get the seals changed--obvioulsy they replaced the fluid. Before the sevice, this was absolutely the best shifting trans I ever had...a friend of mine went through it completely when I first got it. This is now four years later. I didn't even get a block down the street...it never shifted out of second, and I don't believe ever went into reverse. I ended up having to get the whole thing rebuilt. I spoke to my friend who originally did the trans (he worked at a Ford dealership) and told me basically that these trannys need to be flushed--several times to be completely clean. Otherwise, hidden dirt that never makes its way to the pan begins to travel and gets caught in the valve body. Mine was especially sensitive since I never changed the fluid. I said all that to day this...Although yours isn't an AOD, it's probably just as sensitive. Try taking it someplace to get flushed a couple of times. Chances are there's some dirt floating around cloging up the valve body... Quote Selected
