Hi everybody,
I'm new to this forum so please bear with me. I'm writing from the FSU (Former Soviet Union) where I have brought my beloved 1988 Cougar V6-3.8 and now am facing the consequences - you know, nobody knows anything about it her and you can't find any parts... So, I have to find and order parts on the Web, have them sent to a colleague in the US (who is coming over here on a business trip in the beginning of January 2005), but don't know which parts to order...
So, please, here are my questions please:
1. My cougar needs a right rear wheel brake cylinder, but I don't know which one - the parts stores on the net indicate that there are two types of these cylinders that work with Cougars:
- for 9 inch brakes with 1 inch "bore"
- for 10 inch brakes with 3/4 inch "bore"
Mine is a regular LS, so which cylinder should I pick up?
2. There's an oil leak from somewhere near the oil filter, but not the filter itself. When the same thing happened to my 1994 T-Bird when I lived in the States, I had to replace the "Oil Filter Housing Gasket". But the parts catalogues on the Web do not list such gasket for 1988 Cougar. The choice there is:
- Oil Filter Gasket (is this the one that the filter has on it?)
- Oil Pan Gasket
Dies this mean that there's no "Housing" on the Cougars? So which one do I get? Is the filter on 1988 Cougars sitting directly on the engine?
Again, please bear with me if I'm asking stupid questions...

I would say you have 9" drums since it is a 3.8. You can measure then, or check the runout number stamped on the drum. If the number is 9.xxx, or 10.xxx that will tell you, or 9" drums are finned 10" are not.
I have no idea on #2 maybe a 3.8 person can tell you I have a 5.0
You can tell just by looking at the drums - if they're finned they're the 9" version, if they're smooth they're the 10" version.
As for the oil leak, you could try asking for a timing chain cover gasket
