OK, I'm wanting to do something in the way of speakers for the TBird. Nothing fancy, nothing heavy, but I want to clean-up and round-out the sound a bit. I've got a Pioneer head unit at the moment, but will probably get another Alpine like I have in the other two cars eventually.
I was looking at some of the component systems that include some smaller woofers (5-1/4") some tweeters and crossovers. These would mount in the doors and dash on the '83. Would these and some 6x8's in the deck fed off a 4-channel amp be sufficient? What about a small (8-10" free air) sub-woofer instead of the 6x8's? I'd like to have a little bottom end, but I am NOT building a box or any of that shiznit.
Normally I make due with some 6x8 or 6x9's and some 5-1/4" door speakers, or 4" dash speakers and call it a day. Sometimes it sounds good, other times it sounds just ok. This is not my thing really :giggle:
So anyway.....
personally... i like this place http://www.dandbsales.com
but if your looking for good sound.. look in the audio section of a JC whitney.... Visonik is a really good brand good quality
Volfenhag is a good bassy woofer if you get a single woofer and hook it to an amp... say 600 watts continious... that'll fill up your bottom end that you want
clarion makes a good speaker too. nuff said there
its all depending on what ya want man
hope i helped.... if not i just babbled and nobody really cares lol
I think I'm going to have to check the "Strongly Disaggree" box on JC Whitney...
I like your idea of components in the front with a sub in the back. I run 6.5 coaxials in my car and wish I had components so I could have the tweeter higher up. That way my legs wouldnt block the highs. If you put adequate power to them with a 2 channel amp they will get plenty loud without distortion.
I'd also go with just a sub in the rear without 6x8s. That is what I run in my car, since I don't care for anything but bass coming from the back. One way to think about it is when you go to a concert, do you stand with your back towards with stage? It's the same way with a car, why have all of the music behind you? Are you planning on mounting the sub in the rear deck?
I don't know...just trying to figure it out. That was going to be the plan.
if you like to build your own stuff and and don't like spending tons of money on high priced junk then check this site out...

besides did'nt you say that you are going to cat jam this year?
if so then you can sample my system ;)
i have these in my doors and my rear deck

partshagpress don't seem to stock the mids anymore:disappoin
so i had to find a pic somewhere else..
there is a guy selling the mids on ebay but the price is a rip off with shipping..

anyway... if you have any questions please ask
Nick
You running 2 of those woofers in your deck or just one?
6" in the front doors,5 1/4 won't fit with out 6" adapter plates.
For the rear deck the holes are 5x7"
Do an ebay search for phoenix gold 5 1/4 xenon components(there called xenon 5.0),they are a very nice kit and sound awesome, they also come with a nice crossover and a 6"/5x7 and 6x9 adapter plate set included in the kit.
I got mine for 58.00+shipping to canada,in total 98.00 shipped.
Would be less shipped to you because your in the states.
You can even get 2 sets,on for the front with the 6" plate and then get a set for the rear and use the 5x7 plate.
I priced these speakers out down here at my local audio shop and they sold for 400.00cdn,great deal for the 140cdn i paid!
As for a sub,a small 8" should do,got a 6 1/2 factory one in my sc and it sounds ok but needs a little more like an 8".
For an amp, look into something 5 channel, that way you can run your 4 speakers and sub in one clean install and not have to run 2 amps.
Alphasonik, audiobahn, alpine, stick with one of thoses, they all make great sounding amps.
I run alphasonik amps in my car, they have an s/n rating of 100db and distortion of 0.02 and sound great, you should be able to pick up there 5 channel for under 200.00 dollars.
In total for an amp and speakers it will probably run you 500.00 and all your equipment will be fairly high end.
Try to stay away from the above mentioned cheapy stuff, you get what you pay for.
Chuck I say get rid of the 6X8"s all together. Then take a piece of 3/4" ply wood and cut out a basic square and mount it underside of the rear deck where the 6x8"s went then mount you some 8"s or 10"s in place of the 6x8"s. This will keep it light but still give you some good low end. I've got 10"s in that location in my 84 T/c. only other thing to do to make it better would be to seal the trunk from the interior.
Well I wasn't sure what size holes were in the doors. I don't really want to use external speaker grilles...so I want something that would be recessed. They say 6-1/2 and 5-1/4" fit in the doors.
Also, how do they actually dimension speakers?
Which kit are you referring to? I checked and am not sure which is the correct one....there were a couple component sets with the crossovers (some just had the inline caps)
Chuck they usally mesure stright across the speaker to get its dimensions. On the oval speakers the measure the widest, and longest parts to get the size. Just so you know the factory size in the doors is 6 1/2". If you by the 5 1/4" just take some masonite and make your own adapter. bolt the speaker to the adapter then bolt the whole thing to the door. As for the ones with caps not the crossovers the caps block out low end. The crossovers should have coils in them to block the high end from the larger speakers and caps to block the low end from the tweeters and most likely to block really low bass from the woofers in the setup.
Right, I understand what the caps do. Just a cheapy way of limiting the frequencies the speakers see.
I may have to go with a small enclosure for the rear speaker(s). The trunk is going to be "sealed" from the cabin, but "air tight" is not the plan.
i run woofer, one mid,and tweeter for each channel... of 5+1 that i have..
right front, left front ,right rear, left rear the olny place i have diffrent woofers is in the center.."which is the dash speakers" since i did'nt want to hack up my dash.. and this is what i used..
http://www.partshagpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=296-145
and for subs i run 4,8 inch orions...
hance the 5+1.. i'm running Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1
left and right, front and rear channels are running 85 watts rms center is 100 watts rms and the subs is running 450watts rms
The trunk doesn't have tobe air tight. The closer it is to air tight the better it should be. Besides to seal it isn't that hard. In the large gaped side areas use expand foam. Then I used fibereglass resin with the hairs in it to seal the little holes in the rear deck I did use masking tape to block the holes on the bottom side. This worked great. I do have 2 12" mounted right behind the seat. So you clould seal that whole with the masonite and silicone. Then you don't have the box taking up you trunk space, But you still have really good sound. But do as you wish. I had a friend that had 2 10"s mounted in the rear deck of his Dodge Aspen and didn't seal the trunk from the rest of the car and it still sounded good. Just not as loud.
All that does is add extra weight and extra to the car :yuck: My "separator" between the cabin and the trunk is just going to be some carpeted ABS plastic with perhaps some sound deadener on it...
Your original idea would be great Chuck.
6.5" components in the doors with the tweeters in the dash and you can hide the crossover that you would use with the components inside the door. That will give you good mids and highs.
Then, in the rear decklid, you could either do four more components and then add a small subwoofer and power it all with a 5 channel amp or just get two good quality coaxial 6x9's to put back there and use a nice 4 channel to power everything.
Well I have a 4-channel amp thath I have used before and was just going to use. I don't really want to dump alot of money it it at the moment...just gotta have tunes in the car. I have a decent pair of 6x8's that I might use for the time being. I could always substitute in some 8" subs later.
My only concern with the 6-1/2" in the doors is keeping them flush-mounted as I don't want to cut up the door panels, or the doors themselves. This is on the '83, so I don't have the big speaker-grille door panels.
You shouldn't have to cut anything and the door panels should fit back over them fine. I've used 6.5" speakers in the doors of my '85 and both of my '87s without any issues with clearance.
Well both the 85 and the 87 have the "speaker-friendly" door panels...the 83-84's cover the speakers completely.
Do a search for phoenix gold xenon in speakers and they should come up,you can use them without the grills and they come with a single crossover that looks like a small amp, there xenon 5.0 components.http://cgi.ebay.com/PHOENIX-GOLD-X5-0-5-25-XENON-COMPONENT-SPEAKERS-NEW_W0QQitemZ9744878011QQihZ008QQcategoryZ18800QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Here's a link
Just ordered a set :D
dont put the 6*8's in bcuz right now im running 4 12's off of 2 2000 Watt Monoblock amps. and when u lef the back out it hit alot harder the sound got more into the cab. its pretty loud
I don't need 4-12" subs........unless you're talking about a trip to Subway. In that case, I'd have lunch for a week.
I double-checked some old pics of my '85 and it did not have the built-in plastic speaker grills like the '87s did. It just had carpet there next to the map pocket.
I stand by my statement. Even in your '84, the speakers should fit without any clearance issues. If they do not, then I will buy them from you. :D
Cool you'll like them chuck, very high quality for a good price.
Got your motor mounts today in the mail, nice pieces, thanks.
Cool, I was wondering how long they would take. Looks like just under 2 weeks. Sorry you had to wait a bit for them.
IMO if you are doing it for quaity sound round speaker are the way to go. 6" in the doors 3 1/2 or what ever fits it the dash iforget and some 6" in back. and a 10 or what ever you what in the back. if you what to mount it in the panel do it in the middle inbetween the 6's. i would defanitly recomend something else in the back with the sub. just my Oppinion everyones got one.
Chuck, I think you need (6)6x9's across the back, all 4-ways, (4)6.5" speakers in each door, (10) tweeters lining the dashboard. Next, cut the steel panel behind the seat so you can install a custom molded fiberglass housing to hold all 16 of your 18" subs.
By my estimate, you'll need about 50,000 gigawatts to run this setup. You might also want to add some air shocks in the rear to keep it from sagging.
Geez. It only takes 1.21 gigawatts to travel through time. That might be a better option Chuck. Just forget about all this audio and spring for the flux capacitor!
Or just an oscillation overthruster.....for the trans-dimensional travel
could just keep it simple and go with 6'' in the door 3 1/2 in the dash, 6x8or9" in the back and if you want a little 10"300watt amp setup
