it's a kit that makes your tranny shift harder/better, basically

It may be true, but only on 4 cylinder tranny....

From Coolcats.net :
The ubiquitous shift kit will firm up your shifts, prolong the life of the transmission, and give you slightly better gas mileage. Shift kits work better in conjunction with a higher stall torque converter but that's not required.

By the way, the 4-cylinder automatic transmissions (C3 or A4LD), used in rear-drive 4-cylinder Ford applications (including the Mustang and Ranger), are usually weaker pieces to begin with since they weren't designed to handle the torque of a V8. Any shift kits or souping up in these would probably hasten transmission failure

Think what you want, but I gauren-dam-tee the only reason my AOD has lived through FIVE years of abuse is the Trans-Go shift kit.

I agree,  I put a TransGo in my 2nd transmission in 1998 and its still going strong

Is the better gas mileage part true? I have never heard of a shift kit getting the car better mileage.

I never noticed a gas mileage difference because it was done in conjunction with my exhaust.  First 2 Mods I did to this car... Gas mileage went up about 3 MPG on the highway, but I would have to attribute 90-95% of that to a full 2.5 inch exhaust with full headers swapped in place of the stock choketubes.

Much better shifts.  She barks the tires on the 1-2 shift and sometimes when I'm just into 4th (around 50 MPH) and I nail the gas.

Shift kit for an AOD is around $110 USD.

wow, I don't think i paid but half of that

I got a B&M, and I don't remember which one I got, there's the Transpak, and the Shift Improver kit.

Shift Improver http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=BMM%2D40263&N=120+4294925134+4294925133+300206

Transpak http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=BMM%2D40227&N=120+4294925134+4294925133+300223

Now that I think about it it probably was the Transpak. it came with new springs to put in, as well as the plates and stuff for the valvebody. not all that hard to do, at least when your tranny is sitting on a bench, completely out of the car :p I put mine in before putting that tranny in for the burned out one that was in the car

For the B&M Shfit Kit, the one for 31.95. Do you have to pull the tranny out to install it?

I don't think you have to pull the tranny out for any of them, but I put my kit in with the tranny on a bench so it was cake to do it. all you'd have to do is unbolt the pan (crossmember too likely), filter, and valve body, then put the new plate(s) in and reinstall everything. the kit I got came with springs to put in, so I had to take one of the servos (I think that's what it's called? not sure) out and put the new spring in, that spring was pretty hard to compress and get the part back together. there was one of the valves on the valvebody you have to take out, and on later ones there's a tapped hole to put in a screw to pull out the valve. mine didn't have that so i had to drill a hole. another valve needs to be messed with as well but it just slides right out.

i was just kidding...i had a beauman engineering shift kit in another tbird sport i had. it was when i was in highschool. i rebuilt the tranny with the shift kit (stage2 shift...very firm, 2nd gear chirp durring normal acceleration breaking loose 2nd and 3rd durring holeshots), aftermarket "clutches" and converter. i never beat a tranny so unmercifully before or since then. j slides, breakstands and tranny frops over and over again. the aod never skipped a beat. just laughed at me. id do it again in a heartbeat. they realy make driving an automatic fun....
