Title: E4OD Will it Fit?
Post by: Gurahl on April 13, 2006, 02:36:57 AM
Just as the title asks, will an E4OD fit under an 87 TBird? I am getting a 97 302 Mustang engine that an associate had in his F-150.
He said he would throw in the tranny seeing as how he has no use for it. It was just recently rebuilt so I know it is good. So, what do you guys think?

I thought 95 was the last year for a 302 in a mustang?

If it's a 4.6 tranny the bellhousing will not bolt to a 5.0.  I'm not sure if the E4OD  bellhousing is removeable or not.

Isn't the E4OD a big block auto trans? I thought they were bolted to 460s?

After talking to the guy he says that it was a transplant engine in the 97. The E4od is a truck tranny that was used in Bronco's and trucks. I was just wondering if it will actually fit the bird.

E4OD does not have a removable bellhousing.  Not sure if the E4OD came behind a 460 or not, but if it came behind the 7.3L deisel, I dont see why it couldn't be behind the 460....  However, it is one big  transmission, and I doubt you could fit it in a car.  Besides, the E stands for electronic, so how would you control it in your '87 'Bird?

Bingo.... I wasn't aware they were used behind 5.0 even in the F series(but I don't know it all). They did use the AODE and 4R70W behind the 5.0. The 5.8 did get E4ODs, I have one in my '93 Lightning and a buddy has one in his '94 5.8 F-150. As slowfox says "they are  big transmissions", and you'd need the P/U EEC to shift it cause it is electronic... Unless it is a mass air truck, better forget it, cause the batch fire EECs on the speed densety systems will require a lot of rewiring to get the injectors firing correctly. It is based on the old C6, probably could be made to fit, but there will surely be linkage, crossmember and driveshaft issues.

Yes they are, and heavy as hell.
The new guy had to pull one out of a 95 F-150 with the 5.8, and me and him could barely lift into the back of a customer's truck.
(which incidentally, we had to pull his truck home, on account of the trans in his truck was DOA, hence his buying the one that the rookie pulled..)

Anyway, I'll give a rough guess and say that one of 'em weighs around 250-275 pounds...how close am I, anyone know?
With torque convertor, btw...

Well,.....  I am not a big guy, 5'10", 145lbs, and only lean muscle mass, no bulk here, but if I can wrastle one end of one of them there is no way its 250.  Prob closer to 150-175 drained.

The E4OD is a C6 with an extra gear. It's heavier than an AOD, but I would guess by only a few pounds. Expect it to be longer than an AOD and larger.

B&M (and maybe other manufacturers) make a stand alone shift controller that will operate it. I investigated it to go behind the 460, but they're not that durable, and to get one built well, it would cost a HP rebuild + the controller, which I wasn't willing to invest at the time.

My dad has been wondering about an OD trans for his 86 F350 diesel. The three speed auto with 4.11 gear is killer on mileage.

YOu are joking? I am 6'4", around 250lbs at the time, and me and my buddy couldnt quite lift one aod out. Man you make me feel like a woosie.

i'm 6' even, and 160, and can almost deadlift an AOD by myself, but i'm tellin ya, an E4OD is rather heavy, to an AOD...
Believe me or no, but I work ever day on engine and tranny installs, and I've pulled a few of the trucks trans. for customers, I cant pull an E4OD alone out in the yard...way too heavy.

Yeah, the E4OD is definatley not a one person tranny, even drained.  That is why FordTruckFreeek cant get one in the yard.  Wet they prob weigh in at about 225.
