That's a EEC-III system, has no test port... This gives code retrieval process...

AFAIK back in '83 the engine light is only signaling low oil pressure or overheating... Has no idea there is a computer controlling engine operation...

i agree with above if your EECIII system.
confirm you are by telling us if you have an electronic module on the side of the distributor.

if yes you are EECIV and codes can be pulled
If no, you are a duraspark system

You are certainly either a carb like dual injector CFI blue top system or a carb.

83evtm linky below for your help in the future.

the engine light coming on may be a real fault though..... respond back

If light was on because of oil pressure, engine is probably locked up... My bet is we'll never hear from him again...

BTW AFAIK only EEC-IV system in '83 were the Turbo Coupes, still I don't remember seeing anything before 1987 that had a actual check engine light... EEC-IV expanded to all lines in '84, though NA 2.3 Stang half motors & some Canadian models were carbed as late as '86...

My brother has a 83 Bird EEC 3.  I will have to look at it and see if it has a check engine light.  My 81 had a dummy light that come on the dash.  I don't remember what it said, I think "engine" .
