Title: HR980 compressor and brackets questions
Post by: CougarGal on June 19, 2017, 03:43:38 PM
Hello everyone!  I have (another) dilemma with my '86 XR-7.  I'm trying to get the A/C working and my mechanic found out that the compressor was bad so....found a new OEM HR980 and ordered it BUT, when it got here, we discovered that ONE of the mounting brackets is different than the one that was on my car (see pics below).  Here's my question(s):  does anyone have any idea what the one with the closed bracket actually fits and whether making it work on my car might be a simple change out of a bracket?  I purchased it from someone here on the forum but can't remember who I got it from to ask them about it :(

Correct or existing compressor:

New (incorrect) compressor/bracket:

I would modify the bracket in the car to accept the new design you have now if need be.

i am not sure if welding on the pump iteself would be a good idea, but to correct the issue, that would be the proper thing to do.

what is the OEM pn of your old one vs the new one?

first two letters like E3,, E4,, E5,  E6,,,?

im thinking your new one might be stamped with E3,, and your old one probably starts / stamped with E5  (1985)

I think i remember that new on you have there in my 84 coug i had years ago.

Just looking at the photo, it looks like you could probably make it fit correctly simply by adding some type of spacer on the front of the bracket so that it has the same spacing as the original or by making some simple modifications to the engine side mounting bracket. Agree with above that it is probably not a good idea to go welding on the compressor housing unless all the insides are removed.

Not possible, those are welded together...

Therein lies my problem:  The sticker on my OEM is pretty much illegible so I had to go off the model # of the compressor and it would seem that I got the wrong one (Of course :(        Would making this one work be just a matter of changing out the engine side mounting bracket or am I back to the drawing board with trying to find another compressor?

your new compressor is for the serpentine setup from the 87-88 that uses a different mounting bracket.  I'll have to check the garage but I might have the correct mounting bracket.

If you do, and it will work with my car by only changing the bracket, you'd be my new hero!!! :)

I found the bracket, for some reason I can't upload a picture from my phone.  I'll try another way when I get home.

Next question:  If I use this bracket with the new compressor that I bought, will I have to change out anything else to make it all work?  In other words, is it just a matter of swapping the bracket and the new compressor or is it going to involve changing belts, other pulleys, etc?  THANKS!!!

You will use your v belt setup. Nothing else will change.
