I'm gathering parts for a 5 speed swap and have some questions. How much should a used T5 cost me & should I plan to rebuild it or are they pretty durable. Also what is a good clutch kit if my HP will only be around 300. I know American Muscle sells kits that are not to bad price wise, but didn't know the quality.
I've seen them from $400 to $600 for a nice used transmission in good shape. If it requires a rebuild, don't buy it. I saved forever and sold a ton of parts and bought a Ford racing Z-Spec T-5, and use a LUK clutch......no issues.
I think the T 5 will be last on the list. Will continue to collect parts.( "Hobby Cars" are never TRULY finished.....)
I know this is an old thread but....
I used a 2001 3.8 trans I bought off of Craigslist for $150. I beat the living snot out if at every chance. I used to chirp the tires on downshift and dump the clutch at 3000 rpm's at 25 mph and either it dead hooked or did a one wheel peel. Stock 5.0 s.o., but if I couldn't break it trying, you probably wouldn't treating it decent.
The t-5 charts I've seen all stop at 1998 for the 3.8 from what I've seen. The newer 99-04 trans is better up with steel retainers and all the carbon stuff the 93-95 gt's had and imho are just as strong. I've actually seen a few people claim that the Ford racing t-5's were just a 99-04 trans with a swapped input shaft.
There are problems with the speedo and there is no nss built into the top cover area. I was looking into the speedo problem, but my tbird kept eating motor mounts (3 sets in about a year) and broke the motor mount bolts off in the block. I had the car all ripped apart when I got evicted and ended up junking the car, but I still have the whole swap minus pedals.
For $300-500 for a full swap, plus any 94-04 v-6 trans bolts right in. These are everywhere and go for $75-150 in my neck of the woods. IMHO, Hard to beat it at over $1000 less then just the trans new.
