Title: converting to floor shift
Post by: jcassity on September 12, 2015, 02:26:24 PM
when converting to floor shift from column,,
is there any visual keyway or indicator to tell me where to cut already on the car as a template?

meaning do all cars have some sort of plug or dot or dent or whatever that tells me where to center up and punch through?

I did notice that when I ripped up all the stuff that was glued to the floor, I saw nothing from the top side...transmission hump area.
I spent plenty of time on the underside as well,, seems like I would have noticed something that stood out .... but did not so that's why I was asking.

For posterity's sake...the file name changed with the recent site redesign. The correct link is now

does the hole really "need" to be that  large for an AOD car.  i somewhat understand the 5spd application needing more room.

The plus-shaped hole allows the shifter to be bolted at all 4 corners. Actually 5-speed cars didn't have those tabs, it was just a big square hole. But yeah, it's sort of necessary to do things this way.

when the drawing shows the distance off the dash

does that mean distance off trim around th center area where the ash tray is or does it mean iwthout?

the trim itself is worth 1'' depth so thats why i ask

I think that was measured without the trim. Can't remember for sure though.

My 1988 car had a template already perforated on the floor. I did remove the stamped metal piece from the donor car, but it was clear as day where it went.

I still have my parts car(with stamped metal part removed) If I can help anyway with the floor layout, let me know.

Here's a shot of mine (converted from column to floor shift probably 15 years ago).  Figured this might help in some small way and all of the interior is basically out at the moment anyway.  Used the the template, cut the plus shaped hole, undercoated and sealed stuff up, and the top plate really hides all of it nicely.  I could probably still space the shift selector/indicator housing up a little bit to get it to a "stock" height ... but that all depends on what you like.

also,,, my 87 shop manual shows a cable going to the auto transmission **and** a cable going to the steering column.
