is the radiator in an 88 5.0 the same as mustang if so will an aftermarket alum fit?

Yep. A radiator marketed to fit a 79-93 5.0 Mustang will fit a 83-88 Thunderbird/Cougar just fine.

I ordered a Fox Mustang 3 row aluminum radiator earlier this year for mine from Ebay. I think it was about $140 shipped and for a 5 speed (no coolant ports for the trans). It's been awesome.
