Aren't the axel shafts in an SN-95 rear the same length as my '88? I'm thinking about installing SN-95 rear brakes, but keeping the4 lug, and keeping everything as it should be except re-drilling the rotors for 4 lug instead of 5 lug. What do you think? I have new wheels and am not changing them to 5 lug.

You could just use turbo coupe rears.

Because I can get everything I need for $75.00, no shipping. And they looked bigger than TC rear brakes. I could be wrong about that, though.

Careful, the seals don't land in the same place. Youll have to use a seal for a 60 something Fiat, and even then, you'll have to use speedysleeves to make the axle a couple thousandths bigger so that they seal.
I wanted to leave the current 8.8 in the car with the current axles, and add the rest. Wouldn't that be possible? Remove the drums, add the SN-95 brake assemblies. Of course do the MC and the rest, but my info right now is focusing on the rear.

The rear brakes on the SN95 cars are 10.75" diameter solid rotors and have 38mm Varga caliper. The TC has 10.25" diameter vented rotors and 45mm Varga calipers. The caliper mounting brackets are different which I believe requires shimming some stuff around when you go and mix and match the braking assemblies.

I'll se what is available when the time comes for the swap. If I had access to a Turbo Coupe around here, I'd go that route, but, I don't. I'll do some asking around about the price of the TC parts here on the forum from guys stripping them down.

I've got an 88 XR7 8.8 rear in the garage. If you want to I could get measurements if you need them. I bought the rear because I want an 8.8 rear that is the correct width and also keep the 10" drums. I really should build it and swap it in.
I'd be interested in knowing the specific parts used in the 8.8 XR7 rear, as in the drum backing plates, and if the axles are the same length as the TC axles. In others words, what makes the XR7 rear the proper "width" but yet remain 4 lug. If one was to know if there was a common application for those particular parts, it might make it easier to stay 4 lug, and big drums for those who don't have the whole XR7 rear. My guess is the backing plates are identical to an '87-8 Sport, and the axles may be +/- standard length to accommodate that length.
I haven't looked at the axle chart for awhile, but in my work with the TC rear in my setup, the '94-98 Mustang axles (TC length) worked very well with the Sport back plates and Crown Vic drums (for 5 lug). As far as I can tell, the measurements are otherwise the same as the 4 lug XR7 parts, so I'd be willing to bet a sixxer of your favorite brew that Sport backing plates are the order of the day.
It's also possible that they're "leftover" parts from the funky width '85 and down 2.3t cars using their brake particulars, but that would preclude the usage in an 8.8, I think....the axle lengths from your XR7 rear would quickly rule yay or nay on that theory.

From what I can tell the 88 XR7 8.8 housing is the same width as the 85.5-88 7.5 housing. The XR7 housing itself is wider than the Mustang 8.8.
