Title: Yeah. So I'm done with winter.
Post by: thunderjet302 on January 28, 2014, 01:03:13 AM
Is anyone else tired of winter already? We've got 6 more weeks left and my area is already 20" over the normal snowfall for the whole season. We've got 6 more weeks of winter. It's nice and balmy outside right now too :rollin:.

Yeah it's sucked, plain and simple.  Seems every time we get a little dusting of snow, the road crews have been slathering on more salt than normal this year as well.  It is -3 here right now...but at least we northerners are more used to winter.  I heard from a cousin of mine who moved to Louisiana and they're calling for snow down there this week.  His statement was "I moved south to get away from this ."  lol...I can only imagine what 1'' of snow in the south would do for travel.  They're just not prepared for that sort of thing.

I am just counting the days until I go to Orlando in two weeks.  Going there for 1 week for family vacation and then a week later am going back for some training.  That will be a nice relief!

Yeah, I have some friends that live in Anchorage and I have been going up there every September for a number of years, so I look at the weather. They're having an unusually warm winter this year. It's 10 at my house and 37 in Anchorage right now.

I helped move my son, daughter in-law and two grandkids to Utah in November. I skyped with them on Sunday evening and they had 33 degress. Here in PA we have been in the single digits regularly. It SUCKS! I am ready for Spring.

Ever since the first time I was deployed to the desert some 15 years ago I've been an hot weather person since.  Not just warm; HOT.  I'll take 90 plus all day every day.  I've always been able to work in it, play in it; whatever.

I say it every year.  I could go the rest of my life without ever experiencing snow ever again.  This year is especially bad.

The only upside is hope fully the ant colony in the backyard that always flares up in April will be stymied.  The last real cold winter I had while living in this house kept them away for the following warm/hot.

Two days ago, here, it was a high of 56 degrees F, 12 hours later, with windchill, it was -25 F.

Surreal. I hate the heat, but for some reason, I bet I won't bitch as much this year. I got shade trees and fans. Bring it on.

This cold has been ridiculous. It's great starting a car that has sat outside for 12+ hours in the morning when it's 5-10* below zero. 5 seconds of cranking and then the worse engine noises you'll ever hear for a couple of seconds. Both the Focus and the Mark VII will start though. Almost as bad is sitting on those cold seats.

As far as snow goes I kinda can't decide if I hate it or not. It looks pretty when it first falls but then I want it to melt right away. Plus shoveling/snowblowing it sucks with any sort of wind and near zero temps. You Canadians need to take this  back up to Canada ;).

I feel your pain. My 1980 Tbird sits in the garage all night, so starting in the morning is no big deal. However, sitting all day at work in a rural, flat parking lot getting blasted with -30 windchills all day makes for a fun startup when it's time to go home. It starts up fine, and idles fine, but when I put it in gear it stalls. It did it 7 times today! Once I get it to move, it's fine. And if it's above 20 degress or so it's fine. Just this super-cold  brings out it's arthritis, lol.

Try being me starting my truck in the mornings!! The old powerstroke always starts, but it may take an attempt or 2. The she sits there and complains about it for a minute!!! Lol oh and today was about an ambient temp of -20° this morning, not plugged in( need to get the element replaced) fires right up!!

Winter sucks, end of story.

COME ON SUMMER!

I never, EVER complain about it being too hot. I'd rather be sweating my ass off instead of freezing it off.

It warmed up a bit here to 5*F. When we had all the neighbors out side yesterday with snow blowers bitchin about the cold, I jokingly reminded them when we were complaining about how hot it was last Aug, that there would be a day this winter when we would regret it.......that day was yesterday!  :makefun:

Sometimes I consider the practicality of moving to either the Carolinas or ideally Florida. Maybe bring mom down with me lol. Maybe when my brother is done with school he'd be able to stay local. But I wouldn't be able to just leave mom behind all by her lonesome. My cousins/aunts/uncles are all around here too. I'm not sure how many jobs in my field there are down there, but I know I'd love the heat and humidity. And I'd scale back whatever I had to of my standard of living so I could buy/build a concrete house or at least garage to withstand hurricanes and at least one toy to stay in it :D

Of course the climate changes, the planet went from a hot wet place to a cold icy place...granted, it took several thousand years. Another forum I'm on, a guy posted a chart, owing to meterological and ice cores from the South Pole, etc, Earth is undergoing a regular cycle.

Saying it's anything but climate change, in other words, strictly the result of the last 150 years of man's impact on Earth is untrue and there simply hasn't been enough time to measure the latest trends against those of the the recent past (last 20,000 years or so).

I'm far from an expert, but out ancestors went after big hairy elephants with spears in stuff that makes what we've been getting look like a rainy spring day. We'll survive, if not a little more bitchy about the cold, LOL.
I went on an errand a few minutes ago, walked out, all bundled up, and was like, "hell, this ain't so bad", got in the mountaineer, and it's 28. Normally that would feel cold, but compared to 3 and 20mph gusts, it's a god heat wave. I'll take it.

It's 20* here today. I went for a walk to the mailbox this morning (about a block away from my house) and it felt balmy :rollin:. In the summer if it gets to 60* we all complain how cold it is. A 60* day in March is like a heat wave.

It's supposed to be 30* here tomorrow. But we get another inch or so of snow. Six of one half dozen of the other. All I know is when it gets into the 40* range on a regular basis it's going to feel like I'm living in the Bahamas.

The cold killed the battery in my Dodge.  5 1/2 years old.....got a new one today.  800 cold cranking amps.  $142 after tax.....
It also killed the fan clutch on the Cougar.  It's leaking.  I've NEVER seen one of those leak before.....

the WHAT is leaking?

the fan clutch?

i feel kinda bad for the atlanta people but not really, in a way the real stories about distress are not reported.  If its not a major city issue then it does not make the news.

Its kind of like our "land hurricain" that came through here in 2012,, never heard of such a thing but it happened to us,, and 60,000 people or more without power for weeks, we were out for 11 day.

i can tell you from experience what your cougar can do.......
with a full tank of gas you can power one 800w inverter for 3) 5hour shifts of running a deep freeze for 3 days then you will be on 1/4 tank.
you then drive on your 1/4 tank of gas out to find a fill up spot.  You tell the family that if im not back today, i ran out of gas and let the food rot.  We have plenty of preper stuff.
you drive from gap millls wv out to blacksburg va and finally see signs of power.  you fill up and drive home and repeat the process.

i do not ever ever want to deal with summer time power loss, that sucks worse than this winter cold and thats the gods honest truth.

We got a weird snow fall. Not quite hail, but not frozen rain. Stuck to the ground as slush with snow covering the top.

These 275/60.s are awesome on snow. The stock front wheels create a trench that the fat back tires follow. Its weird to be spinning tires at the light and take off perfectly straight. The back end did crab a bit the whole drive though. Weirdest feeling ever.

Huh. I've yet to see that happen. Maybe on a junkyard car. How old was it?

As far as the SSP fan clutch yeah get that. I've had one on my Thunderbird for several years. It's a Motorcraft part but I'm not sure if you can still get them or not. Also if you don't have it now would be a good time to get a Fox Mustang fan. It's the same size as the Thunderbird/Cougar/Mark VII fan but has 9 blades instead of 7. I'm running one of those too.

I think the weather folks would call this graupel.  We used to see it sometimes while we lived in the high desert/mountains of central Oregon.  Also called styrofoam snow or tapioca snow.  Other regions of the country may have different colloquial terms for it.

DAMMIT another thing I gotta buy LOL. Adding that to the list now. The red car seems fine in the summer with just the SSP clutch. But I might grab a Mustang fan anyway. Why not? I'll definitely be getting that AND an SSP for the black cougar soon. I think hitting 210 degrees during my burnout Saturday night in the street at the Adirondack Nationals last fall has to at least have had some part in the cyl 6+7 compression vanish-ment. Will only know once I tear it open. But my dumb ass was too in-the-zone and didn't see the temp until it was too late; I feel like it shouldn't have gotten that hot given the right cooling system.

Oh. shiznit.

Couple-3 years ago we had a blizzard here, there was a Contour out by my shop, awaiting it's fate for s, anyway, after the snow stopped, there was a huge drift, and the contour was completely buried. There was a Ford F150 wrecker next to it, and only the cab and boom were sticking out..lol.

And I didn't dig the shiznit out either, it melted. Several places had to have extensive repairs because the weight of the snow buckled roofs, or wrecked the walls, etc.

Well, it's one of the VERY few things I've not upgraded over the years.  To be honest I couldn't even tell you which clutch is on there now.  I've had the car 16 years and it's been off and back on plenty enough.  I'd say it's a rather safe bet it's original to the car.  You can still get the SSP clutch, but they've become quite pricey.

I've often wondered why the Mustang was a 9 blade fan as opposed to our 7.  Yeah I know, more power, but the flip side is heavier car.  I think though that the fox Mustang has a distinct disadvantage as far as open grill area in front of the car and underneath, so it NEEDS the fan.

Not that ours didn't.  It always seems that most of these cars that are gone were killed by overheating in the warmer climates and rotting away in the colder/salt-on-winter-road areas.  Probably no different from any other car of it's era, but perhaps a 9 blade fan would have helped the warmer weather cars.  Every stock 5.0 I've ever dealt with ran GREAT in the cold and HATED the heat......

A lot of the trucks were like that too. The 8th and 9th gens, that is. ('87-'91, and -'92-'96, respectively.)
A good bit of the time, a weak water pump or a dirty, or low radiator would help a lot. Most every one of them I ever drove, when they got to normal temp in the summer, they'd seem to "lose" power..I worked on my 92, played with the timing a bit, and negated some of that. Biggest gain came with a new fan clutch and radiator after a nasty little overheating issue cropped up. Probably a lot to do with the rad tho. Ran hard after that, despite being a lowly 5.0, 5 speed 3.55 geared truck.

I have no idea why the fans these cars came with originally only had 7 blades. You can even see the space for the other two blades on the fan. With a Norther Aluminum radiator with 2 1" cores, the SSP fan clutch, and a 9 blade fan my Thunderbird runs around 180* with the A/C on at 70 MPH on the highway. Even in 95*+ heat. I had to replace the radiator because the stock one finally got too gummed up two years ago and wouldn't cool the car enough on the highway in the crazy hot summer of 2012. At 70 MPH with the A/C on the stock radiator was letting the temp creep up to 200*+. I either had to turn the A/C off or slow down to cool the car back down. Now I notice virtually no difference in performance when the car gets up to operating temperature.

Thinking back to the summer of 2012 the warmest day was 103* in Chicago. The coldest day so far this winter has been -14* for a high. That's a spread of 116*. I'm amazed that I live in an area of the country that can change temperature that much.

We've got 6-10" of snow on the way tomorrow. Joy. Spring can't get here fact enough.

We're supposed to get 2"-4" more tomorrow. There is already about 10-12 inches on the ground now (some over the snow has settled over time). I've got 3 foot+ piles at the end of my driveway. Blah.

We got about 5-6 inches here today. It is a very wet snow and a pain to shovel. They are calling for snow with a change to ice and then rain on Wednesday. Oh Boy I can't wait.

Herbsbird it looks like you got a little more than we did here near Harrisburg.

That's what SHE said...

MODoT is already saying people should plan to stay home tomorrow. We went to town tonight for a few things that we NEEDED, not because we think we'll be stranded, and Wal Mart was stupid. We waited in line for 30 minutes, I am serious. Unreal.

I remember the blizzard of '11....we were housebound for 4 days. I did get out on the quad, but it took me an hour to make it a mile. I gave up and came back home that day.

This one isn't supposed to be near that bad, but it's still a little odd to see Missourians buying shiznit tons of bread and water and stuff over a little 10" snow being forecasted...lol.
(I've got a deep freeze full of deer, and enough firepower to make every deer in 50 miles dead. I fear no snow. just the idiots who can not drive in it.)

Seems like every year on a couple of forums I make a post or two hootin' and hollerin' about the 1" of snow, can't drive, bad weather wheelmen who seem to be non existent during dry weather sessions lol.

We were coming back from St Louis the first week of January, in a blizzard, some  in a little import front drive coffin passed me doing about 60..I was going 45...we stopped at the next gas station, and there he was, stuck in a pile of snow at the entrance to the fuel pumps. Normally I'd offer my help in yanking them out, but if you're dumbassed enough drive 60 or so on roads with 2 inches of slick, you're beyond my help.

We saw quite few stucks and spins that day....we made it home in one piece however. The way the weather was, it was leave St louis when we did, or risk being there another night...and I wanted to see my kids. It had been 4 days at that point since we dropped them off, and we were homesick.

In retrospect, that was an arsed up trip...little good came of it, save for meeting with jcassity from here on the board.
The weather sucked the whole time we were gone. And soemthing with my body got all messed up...for about a week, it was all I could to move around the house. Wasn't sick or anything, just felt like a really bad case of jetlag and detoxing from something...only, I had nothing in my system.

So, back to current...all the schools here have been called off for tomorrow, and I think (by listening to the county chatter on the scanner) that they're considering declaring a state of emergency tomorrow. Meaning they can order people to stay home, and off the roads, etc.
Hell yes.

Here's a wacky thought. Wouldn't it be alright to load all this snow up, haul it to Nevada and dump it all into Lake Meade? They could probably use the extra moisture there....and I'm over this.... LOL

There's a drift (as of right before full dark) as tall as my Tbird. My Mountaineer was struggling...I made a circle over past my dad's place and back up the other gravel road. 3 foot drifts in places, and still coming down, wind is getting stronger. The snow will end soon, but the drifts will be big as dunes by daylight.

School is already called, and people are being told to stay home again tomorrow.

It will all come to pass.

12-14 inches here, drifts like a son of a bitch. This is worse than the big one of Feb '11. That was only a few inches but it blew so hard.

It's gonna be a shovelin' kind of day...if I want to put rubber on the pavement later.

We dodged the bullet here. We were supposed to get 6-10", and we got about 4". I bet all of the schools and places that closed preemptively last night feel silly. When I was a kid, they NEVER canceled school the night before. You had to get up early, listen to the radio announcer list the closings in alphabetical order. When he skipped over the letter where your school would have been listed, it was devastating, lol. I would keep listening until it was time to start my long walk to school.

One time, I was walking to school in the snow, and some old man yelled "hey kid, school is closed today!". I just ignored him, and thought "yeah right". I walked all the way to school, and wouldn't ya know, it was closed! So I got to walk all the way back home.

We got 7 inches here last night. Season total is 62.4 inches. Thank goodness it has compacted/melted a bit over the last 6 weeks. Right now the snow depth is about 13-14 inches in most places, except for snow piles. I've got one pile along my driveway that is almost to the top of my 4 foot fence.

It got cold and snowy here pretty much right after Thanksgiving, which is unusual. I had two cyclocross races in early Dec that were on snow-covered ground and at temps in the low teens. Not fun.
Outside of a couple "warm" days in the 40's since then, it's been cold and snowy. I'm tried of training in the frigid cold.

I also have a bunch of stuff I'd like to do on the car, but I'm not in the mood to eff with it in the cold, unless it's a necessity.

We've had it like Chuck here, too. Got cold in November, started snowing in mid December, and has been consistently cold and with regular snow storms ever since. It was the first white Christmas we'd had in years. We did have a nice break in mid January, a week of rain and temperatures in the low 50's, which melted all of the snow we had up to that point, but then it cooled right down again and the snow came back with reinforcements. There are about 36" total on the ground now.

Thankfully last night's storm was a dud. We ended up with about 6".

cut, split, and stack firewood. From oak trunks 4' across, no less.

Shoveling snow ain't shiznit, compared.
I had to use a 4 wheeler to push a few of them into my woodshed to the splitter. Hell of a time flipping them over, too. Each 30" long, 4' thick chunk of trunk made over 20 pieces of firewood.
Good thing: it's all dry, and was bulldozed down a year ago. Let it sit for a couple of weeks, and it burns fine.

All I have to do is drag it up the house. Now, if I can figure out how to get the brake unseized on the big Case tractor...dirty bastid.

Not me. I had to dig two deep holes in the height of summer's heat (and drought) last summer. Then I filled those holes with two of the best dogs I ever had...4 months apart.

I'll stick to snow and firewood for a good long while yet.

Normally, cutting the firewood in and of itself wouldn't be that bad, but these chunks are around 350 pounds before splitting (guessing, anyway). Then there's the splitting them, bending over, pickin' 'em up and stacking them. It makes for a tylenol night.

I've got chunks so big that if I had to lift them, I'd have to use a hoist. Thankfully my splitter can be horizontal and vertical...so vertical is it. But I have to roll the pieces in the shed and then raise them about an inch and half. After that, they get whittled down pretty effectively.
With propane over 6 bucks/gallon, and diesel fuel only a buck or so less, wood heat suddenly seems to be pretty ed agreeable, despite the work.

Y'all can have the snow..I'll keep the wood, even though I believe shoveling snow is easier. Maybe it's just the way I shovel it, too...I don't know. ;)

That's my personal record low that I've personally experienced.  Had to endure that on a flight ramp while changing an actuator on the rear spar of an aircraft.  Wind Chill pushed it to -39.
The real kick in the pants was the fact that the bolts were too small for me to manipulate with gloves and when you swap these out, sometimes jet fuel will weep out..... Guess where the fuel went?  Right on my hands.....

What is normally a 20 minute job for 1 took almost an hour for 2 of us.  Had to keep swapping out every few minutes.

I experienced -40 (that's C and F) many years ago in Calgary. That was the actual temp, no wind chill. It sucked...

Coldest I can remember it being here in NS is -35C (-31F) without wind. Oddly, that night was one of the most fun snowmobiling nights I ever had. Perfectly clear out, full moon, the snow sparkling that way it does when it's really cold, the machines working perfectly, and when we stopped to have a smoke or eat a snack it was perfectly still.

A typical "cold" night around here is -25C (-13F) with windchills of -35 or so. "Normal" weather this time of year is between -2 (28F) and +2 (36F), going down to -10 to -15 (14 to 5 F) at night. We're a semi-Maritime climate - close enough to the ocean that it moderates our temperature, but the prevailing winds come from the continent so we can get some cold blasts as well. Unfortunately we're also the "arsehole of North America" - just about every storm that forms over the continent, from Texas to Alberta, eventually passes through here. Often it's rain in winter, but this year it has almost always been snow. Radio said so far since Jan 1, we've gotten just under six feet of snow. If we don't get another flake this year it'll be more than double our normal January/February/March total...

For a week now, I've been trying to fight this cold from developing further, vitamin c, lots of OJ (but no vodka lol), a such. It's starting to subside, but occasionally I'll have the aches and pains.
I'm ready for tornado sirens, severe t-storms, and spring weather. I am absolutely beyond this winter business.
I'll be 37 in August, and this is probably the worst winter as far as snow and just bitter cold I can remember here. Last two winters were pretty snowy, but this one has them beat. Thankfully, by the end of the week, we're going to be in the low 40's here. I expect to go out and suntan or something...err, maybe not, but it'll be nice to go outside with just my coat and not have to be bundled up like a  Antarctic explorer...

Hope y'all start warming and melting down soon too. :)

It was -23 F this am here.  The majority of mornings I have gone to work in the past weeks have been near or below 0.  When the temperature does go up to 15, then it snows.  If you go out and shovel it, then it snows another 1/2 inch or inch more an hour later messing up your work.  As I do my work around town (driving), I see more and more ice dams and gutters damaged by ice (Probably not a good year for insurance adjusters for sure).  Looks to me like '78-'79 all over again.  Last month I wrote about a 2002 ZR-2 Tracker 4 wheel drive I bought on December 26.  What a blessing!!  The T-Bird has stayed comfy in the garage.  I just took the trickle charger off the battery in the T-Bird an hour ago!!  I haven't been able to do more work on the Tracker because it is just to cold to be moving cars around here--plus the snow issue.

If I had to guess, I'd say about 10 inches have hit the ground so far.....no sign of it slowing down.  The last 90 minutes dropped 2 inches on the ground.  I know because that's when I started shoveling.  Where I started has about 2 inches.....  I'll be going out again shortly.  My wife took the truck to work this morning.... Looks like the Focus is gonna get a workout.

Started the Cougar.  She idled at about 1200 for a few minutes then went down to normal.  Hasn't moved out of the driveway in 46 days now and I think it'll be another 15-20 at least.

My son has mentioned Magna and Roy. They are looking to buy a house in the Ogden area. No, my son doesn't drive any T-Birds or Cougars. He has an 08 Mazda 5 right now. Made one pass down one side of my drive and headed up the other side back to the house.  Broke a snow chain on one wheel half way home.
Im using one of those zero turn garden tractor mowers ~hustler brand & snow plow.
It was dark so I decided to take a risk and not fix the chain till tomorrow, instead put some more time on an estimate for a couple more hours.
Today comes,, today goes,,, and now I am at the point where its so deep I cannot even plow it.  I don’t own a tractor anymore (RIP), so its official.
We are snowed in…….. and on Valentine’s day to boot which I will make sure is a very happy day for the wife and I.

I really wish I had chosen to fix my mower chain though, I would not be “so stuck”.  17inches so far

BO~ ill check in on your folks tomorrow,, long walk

Officially, today was the warmest day here since Mid-January= 30+F .  Unofficially, it is the first time I feel the temperature has been above 20 F since New Years Day.  Nothing has really melted because the snow pack is just too darn cold.  Tonight the wind has kicked up---no doubt the suction from that vortex/storm hitting the east coast.  So after the east gets the snow, I am sure this high wind follows right in there.  There was a news story of a small town on the Mississippi north of here---their main water tank tower just FROZE up from the cold.

Hit 50 here today.  I can see some bits of grass here and there ON OTHER PEOPLE'S yards.....

My house faces north and therefore the front does not see the sun.  The trees on the property next to and behind limit the amount of sun in back too during this time of year when the sun is low in the sky.  I'm always one of the last houses to have snow on the street.  Hopefully it downpours tomorrow and gets rid of the majority of  still on the roads to include the sand and salt.  My yard will take some time.  I STILL have some mounds that are around 3 feet high.

We're supposed to get more snow on Tuesday and the temps will plummet again afterward....Hope the weatherman is wrong about that....

I've still got 4 inches of snow on the ground in ares where I haven't piled it up:wtf:. The snow refuses to go away. Plus it's 25* and lightly snowing again right now. Sigh.

A week ago we got a surprise Thunderstorm with prolonged rain here due to a couple of days with temperatures near 40 F.  This with all of the snow on the ground since Christmas---but the streets got scrubbed clean.  The warmth lasted those 2 days.  The onslaught of rain caused a nearby creek to overflow-- the bridge pictured--closed due to water over the road.  The ice slabs have blocked one portal of the waterway.  The slabs must each weigh more than a car for sure.  It kind of looks scenic.  The temperature has since gone back to lows --like last night = -6 F.

High of 15 degrees today.  10 more inches of snow on the way this weekend.  I took the Cougar out for a nice drive Wednesday after swapping out the fan, fan clutch, battery (STONE DEAD even after starting the car regularly.  Did I mention it was only 1 1/2 yrs old), and the IAC (removing it and cleaning it with penetrant every so often finally stopped working).  First time I had the car out since December.  Guess it'll be remanded to the driveway yet again.  I'm pretty sure my Mustang has no idea what a road looks like anymore.

We're supposed to get 2-4 inches of snow tomorrow. I guess it will at least make the Hawks/Penguins outdoor game at Soldier Field feel wintry. Then it can melt, along with the rest of the gray/icy  we have everywhere. It's supposed to be 33* on Thursday and 40* on Friday next week. First back to back days above freezing in 10 days. Been a low of 40° and highs 50-60° the last week or so with occasional rain. I hope our mild temps start hitting you guys soon. I haven't seen freezing temps yet this month thanks to the high pressure parked right over us the last few weeks. February is generally our coldest month of the year. we had 11 days over 100°f last July and a total of I believe 33 total days last year over 95.

In needs to cool down to keep the snow in the mountains and prevent flooding so we don't end up in a drought this summer

Funny everyone on here cussing the snow. Around here we will take moisture in any form. Over the last several years we have had such little snow or rain, that our lakes have dried up to the point we can't use them. If anyone needs any boats, this is the place to come. We no longer have a place to float them. I am ready for winter to be over though. Way to many days below zero with winds of 20 to 50 mph. This past month it has warmed up. Wind is still here though. Several days of not seeing the sun due to the blowing dust.

Cold and damp out here.  Not good weather for the Cougar to have a cold start in.  She's cranky until she warms up and then fine.  I'm gonna have to pull the salt & pepper connectors apart.  I ran codes to see if anything was up.... Nothing other than the 95 that's been there forever 'cause I never put the fuel pump secondary wire in.

What mass air ECU do you have? What "O2 sensor" harness do you have? Maybe a dumb question, but I've never had to actually research a mass air conversion, I just bought a car with it done and assumed it was done right :hick:  But all over the internetS it seems a plethora of bad information, and I'm learning about it all as I get the black car's computer repaired due to an internally shorted IAC motor.
Title: Yeah. So I'm done with winter.
Post by: V8Demon on April 03, 2014, 10:01:14 AM
The ECU is a C3W1.  Simply a revision of the A9P.  I'm running the stock 02 sensor harness, engine harness, and EEC harness.  I actually splurged and bought the Ford Racing Mass Air Conversion Kit when I did the swap over.  24 pound injectors and a 73 mm C&L meter.  Pressure is @ 46.  She likes it there.  When I first got the car up and running, I used the 19's and jacked them to 60 PSI.  Anything lower and the car would give codes for adaptive lean limit.  60 PSI on a 19 pound injector will flow just like a 24 at stock pressure (provided you have enough pump to back it up).  The burned ECU is reason why I went new with mine.  I'd have been furious if I went used only to have it not work or last only a short time.

The o2 sensor harness seems to be the sticking point with the conversions.  Auto harness with auto ECU.  Manual harness with manual ECU.

As per Joel5.0:
Quote
The O2 sensors harness "loop" or jumper, has to do with the system management of the NSS signal to pin 30. Manual transmission setups use the SIGRTN ground and AUTO transmission setups use the starter solenoid START circuit (which gets 12 vdc when an engine cranking condition occurs). The problem with the O2 harness is...... when a mix between the auto circuit and the manual SIGRTN dependent circuit (with the SIGRTN circuit inline) happens....... causing the circuit to burn in the ECM.

In my opinion, the one area where I believe Ford could have streamlined a bit in order to save money was with these harnesses.  So many different types between the vehicles.  SD vs Mass Air; Auto vs Manual.  Moving pin locations for the thermactor system between SD and MA.....  It would seem that even almost 30 years ago, they didn't want you messing with stuff.  The Mustang 02 harness had the low oil light wiring as well.  It's in a totally different location on the Cougarbirds (in the EEC harness) yet pins out to the same location.

I wonder what the part # is for a Cougar 5.0 harness?  I thought I had that info at one point, but cannot find it.  I have a spare 5.0 Cougar o2 harness in ONE of my parts boxes, but it's not one of the easily accessible ones, so I can't check to see if the part # sticker is still wrapped around it.  The harness was in great shape so there's hope that it is.

I know you've seen this, but hey check it again.  You may find some info.  http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?33560-O2-sensor-issue&highlight=sensor+harness

So if you have the wiring harness that came with your cougar from the factory, pre-mass air, then I don't know where your EEC, stock, would be getting the NSS signal. I haven't yet read about SD, only what they did with mass air. I believe it's pin 31 for NSS. Pin 31 needs to see 12V if used with an auto transmission computer A9P, to kick up the idle just a bit for the load of the torque converter when "in gear". Pin 31 needs to see GND if used with an A9L manual trans computer, to change the "idle down" characteristics for whether or not the shifter forks are in N, and possibly the clutch switch?

It sounds like this does NOT affect ability to start the vehicle, this is outside of the ECM...maybe it interlocks the multifunction switch? This seemed to be a consensus the one night I was jumping around the net. But depending on A9L / A9P you could either get a "hanging idle" or a stalling out/stumbling condition. The latter condition occurring with an auto trans, experienced when putting it in D or R, because the engine doesn't compensate for the load.

I have an SD harness in my car too. No loop wire. Everything stock. So I cut the wire to pin 31 and grounded it out going to the ECU, so it will always assume I'm in N and just let the engine idle as if I were stopped under all conditions which would cause me to pop my foot off the gas.

I have a Tremec 3550 and there are NO harnesses plugged into it save for the VSS on the speedo drive gear spot.

91-93 Mustang 5.0 Mass Air ECU Pinout

Unless I'm missing something, the modification you speak of is not needed if you stay with an auto trans.  The directions for the Mass Air Conversion from Ford Racing may shed some light....
My car KNOWS when there is a load on it.  It could be in the middle of a REAL grumpy surge in idle and if I switch it into R or D, it smoothes right out.  I've pondered swapping it all out for  a mass air harness and he go harness from a mustang if I can find some Nos stuff.

Pin 30. That's it. I was close lol.

But yes, it appears that if staying with AT, and using an A9P, it will work since it gets the 12V signal from the starting/charging system. Which I forgot that I read just last week in that one guy's rambling post I saved. Where people fry ECU's is using an A9L here, where that unit may/may not deal well with the 12V input there, where it expects to just be grounded on pin 30 (in the case of MT where the circuit shown in the "91-93" diagram goes to either the NSS or CPS).

With an A9P in a stick car, with everything hooked up correctly (assuming all wiring is there), the ECU will receive ground where it expects 12V, and do nothing when the transmission is engaged, causing stumble/stall under load.

Hmm it's got to be something with the wiring or the engine control/sensors. My Thunderbird just has the MAF wires added to the harness and two pins moved and it's fine. I just got a MAF connector pigtail from the junk yard and some EEC-IV pins and swapped it into the car following the directions from CoolCats. The system only throws a code 95 in KOEO (never ran the wire) and 44, 94 in KOER (Thermactor is gone). I've even running the same C&L MAF you are with the stock airbox. Are you sure the idle speed is correct? I had to set mine with a tach/dwell meter to 750rpms hot idle to eliminate and cold start issues. Before I did that on a cold start (below 50* outside after sitting overnight) the car would be grumpy and idle surge for about 30-45 seconds. It never stalled but is was grumpy. Do you still have the fuel pressure set at 46psi with the 24lb injectors? I've got a bone stock (4 year old) Motorcraft fuel pressure regulator on my Thunderbird. Fuel pressure is at the factory spec (39psi non adjustable) and it runs fine.

Yup 46 psi.  Funny youention temps cause in the warm weather she's fine.  I went over the car thoroughly the other day and found a bare wire that I fixed and my brake booster vacuum line was hard and cracked.  Changed it out.  Pedal feel improved.  Didn't have any effect on the idle.  I'll pull the connectors and give them a good once over.  Its been a few years.

Try bumping the idle with a tach/dwell meter hooked up to verify engine speed. Joel on SBFTech suggested I try setting it to 750rpms hot and it has worked fine at that speed. Just make sure you set it with the engine at operating temp. That grumpy idle/start when it's cold outside (below 50*) went away.

I've never tried the process to teach the idle...will have to go look it up, don't remember. But it does in fact work though?

It's right around there now once its warmed up and steady.  Base idle resets are not really doing anything at this point....  I got a gut feeling I'm gonna find something else wrong.  We'll see.

I've never actually set an idle or let the computer learn on, though my cars have all been stock so far. a lumpier cam might change things there. i just unplug the iac still it starts stumbling and then plug it in and drive it.

Well it is probably some sort of electrical issue. How old is the ECT sensor? They can not throw a code yet still be off. If it falls in the OHM spec range though it's probably ok. That's all I've got.

I've tried that but it doesn't always work with modified cars. I've had my best luck setting idle speed with an actual tach/dwell meter.

:wtf:

It was 70* here at 11am. By 2pm it was 50*. As of right now (5:50pm) it's still 50*. Spring is fun eh?

Yeah, same here.  Sunburn on my shoulders from Saturday.  Gonna be pretty cold Tuesday.  It just keeps hanging on.

It's snowing here as I type this....Monday 2:30pm local time.  Will not get too excited now as it will not stick.  This past winter was the coldest one I recall, in my long life.  The only ones which come close were January-February 1977 and, of course, the infamous winter of 1979 (78-79).

Had 2-3 inches slushy wet snow on the ground this morning, some of it is still sticking around. High temp of about 34 today.

Saturday was 81, Sunday was warm, until a storm blew in, last night was cold, and snow this morning, though none stuck. It didn't get over 40 today, and tonight will get down to 25, they say.
shaging fickle weather.

It's funny that you say that when 97% of the experts in the field have said that the climate change we're seeing is anything but normal.  Ice core sampling has shown many times over that the rate of climate change we're seeing now is unprecedented.

You could have at least tried to come up with a cogent argument.

Not to turn this into a g match, but we had "global" warming and cooling for millions of years before Al Gore was more than a swiftly-multiplying cellular mass.

Of course there's no "record" to go by, 350,000 years ago there wasn't a massively developed civilization to gauge today's weather on as a comparison.

It's like saying that because Mustangs sold more, GM dropped the Camaro in the early early 2000's. It had nothing to do with Mustang sales, but a shrinking number of Camaro sales. Now whether or not the Camaro sales were directly influenced by the sales of Mustangs, Miatas, Mountaineers, or Midol isn't my strong field.

But I can tell you from reading history books from 30+ years ago that there were hot and cold cycles. My guess is that no year's weather will be identical to one before or after, as far as extremes go, but shifting tectonic plates, and alignment of other planets, starts, and the moon probably affect it more than some fatcat with a fatter wallet who stands to profit from fear mongering of people who don't know any better.

As far as "proof" of one vs the other, it's merely a bunch of scientists with differing theories. Blame it on Hitler, he roasted all those people...that probably did it, no? :poke:

Given that climate change predates mankind, yes.

I am NOT saying we may have sped it up, but we didn't create it, outright. If and how much we've sped it up is beyond any of us partiting on a mere web forum dedicated to a run of cars that lasted 5 years or so....

This.  There's a reason that the term "global warming" has been replaced by "climate change." Also I hear it's snowing at home.  Not there right now so I can't be sure.
