I think I saw a tumbleweed roll by, lol!! I remember the days when this site outgrew itself at one point; now its so quiet.

I guess I missed the bickering days. I've been gone awhile.

I also wondered if Facebook kinda killed the site?

This happens every year around this time. Spring fever hits, and more people are outside working on their cars, or busy. It'll pick up. It always does. We can do without the "bickering". It's always the same exact handful that do it. maybe this year it won't be so bad.

Good reasons already listed but I suspect a lot of the decline is age of vehicles(find one ob C'list that doesn't look like or needs a bunch of work), plus not too many kids want a grandpa car when they could have a fart canned Honda...
To prove the vehicle age observation, just look over on the Crown Vic board, 85% of the posts will be on the '98-'11(Whales), while the "Aeros"('92-'97) receive maybe 15%... The '79-'91 "Boxes" probably don't get .1% of the posts...

i actually thought about this a few times, id come on the tech sections and not see any new posts of problems to solve ect.
then it hit me, we all are getting smarter on these cars so the old simple problems arent getting posted anymore. its a good thing actually that most of us know our cars front to back. we are a more tech savvy crew than before but i couldnt have come this far and still have the same passion for the coug's and birds without the help of everyone.

I think TurboCoupe50 nailed it on the head. When I received my Cougar in 1996, it was a decent first car for a new driver. While driving, I saw them on the road almost every day. Now, 17 years later, I'll go months without seeing a Cougar/Thunderbird. The ones I do see are ragged out daily drivers which are ready to be sped when an expensive enough repair pops up. The ThunderCat day is the only time I get to see nice examples anymore!

Yea, I agree that these cars just don't have a huge following anymore. Aside from that, just about everyone is out working on their cars this time of year. Trying to get shiznit done before the extreme heat hits, and it becomes a PITA to work on cars anywhere outside of an A/C'd garage. It should pick back up again in July-August.

I was going to join grandmarq.net but I found this as well..would love some tidbits of info for my '87 Vic but there isn't much. If I have to forage for the info all on my own and find things out trial-by-fire, I guess so be it!

I think it's both of these things. Many of the 80-88 Thunderbirds and Cougars that were produced are sped. The remaining ones are either toys or beat up daily drivers. Most of the regular posters on here use their cars as a toy and not a daily driver. Since it's a toy they've long since figured out the problems/issues with it. The older a car gets the fewer there are around for people to purchase/discover. Only us crazies are left :hick:.

Post by: Thunder Chicken on May 07, 2013, 05:26:17 PM
I think there are several reasons:
First, there is no denying that Facebook has taken a bite out of the posts here (as well as many other forums). I think forums are a slowly dying breed, along the lines of the once extremely popular IRC and ICQ
Second, as mentioned, these cars are aging. Because they're aging they're becoming less common, so we're not having as many people joining with questions about how to keep their $500 beaters running. Probably 80% of the members this board has ever had joined just to ask a question about their "new" Thundercat or to sell a car or part. We're not seeing this so much now, and the regular, long-term members just don't have as much to post about
Third, and related to the first: The PC platform is dying, and forums are optimized for this platform. Smartphones and tablets, and their dedicated social media apps, are taking eyes away from this and most other forums
Fourth: Many long term members have simply either sold or lost interest in their old Thundercats. Hell, I'm an admin and haven't owned one for almost three years now (though this is only because the right one hasn't come along). People have gotten older, gotten busier, etc
And fifth, the elephant in the room: Yes, the constant bickering and nitpicking among certain members (I am NOT naming names here, and am going to point out that it always takes at least two to argue) has certainly turned a lot of people off. This site has always been extremely generous with what is allowed and/or tolerated. While this can be a good thing and usually is (nobody likes over-moderated forums, where you're afraid to fart for fear of being banned), unfortunately it has also resulted in some people taking liberties with this policy and mucking it up for everyone else. Once again, I'm an admin here and even I don't often post in tech threads anymore, even when I know the solution to a problem, because I don't want the arguments that will almost certainly ensue because certain people have certain ways of doing things and will hear no other ways (I have a brother much like that). In fact I rarely even look at tech threads now because I know it'll already be full of arguing and don't have the time or heart to deal with it. It's a shame that a few people have done this to the site, but the opposite extreme, with people getting punted left and right would not be a good alternative. I keep holding out the faint hope that these people will either smarten up or go away, but so far such hopes have been in vain...

I have owned my thunderbird since 2006, it was a project/first car with my dad and although after getting my license last year and driving the bird around as a daily driver I still like the car. It's getting rock chips and has already been in 2 accidents with careless drivers, is breaking down every once in a while and all the usual things. The car is still a blast and gets looks all the time. Being a 17 years old I think it's important to own an old(er) car, you learn your way around the car when something breaks you learn how to fix it, it's the experience/ memories that I like about the car. The forum is just a nice addition with many helpful individuals, sure there is arguing but I dont think it's that bad that i wouldn't visit the forum anymore it's cool to check out all the projects and resources that members are sharing with each other.
Being in California is also not that great since most of you guys are across the country so we can't hangout like the Mustang, Camaro, Honda guys of my generation do.
The forum is just cool I visit it 3-4 -5......10 times a day to see if anything is new.

You know I have a problem with that, especially after contributing to maintain the site... It's the main reason I haven't been around much over the last couple years, the fun and comradely just are no longer here...
None of the other sites I visit would have put up with the shenanigans that happen here(and no for the most part they are not over moderated), it would have been "straighten your ass up or you're history"... Some boards have a 30 day suspension policy that on a second or third warning is invoked, for the most part it works... For those it doesn't, well they aren't there any longer...
Anyway I've decided to have this shag with me and you're going to get it back attitude, maybe we can run off the remaining members...

Facebook is great for brand new stuff, people posting updates on their cars etc.
but try find anything older and you can forget it.
Forums have the advantage of being better organised and easier to search, just less of the cars around these days. but in saying that, it means that those are being built, should be of better quality :D

I'm sure most of you are talking about the way I handled my self lately. I do appreciate the fact that nobody here has called me out by name or for that matter has really said anything bad about what took place other than your all tired of it. Me too! I really like this forum and have always appreciated the knowledge here. I got tired of always being hammered by a certain individual and I left this forum for about two months hoping it would be better when I came back to ask questions. Most of what I have learned about working on this Cougar is about every thing I know about cars and I learned it here from a lot of you who have been patient with me and helped me out. I know about 1/50th about my car compared to most of you. Problem is it seems when I ask a question the same silver back gorilla always climbs on my back. If you haven't noticed I went back and erased my posts that I felt were not appropriate and apologized. I'm sure if those of you have seen the before and after pictures of my car you would know that I'm not trying to jerk anyone around and that I have put in some blood, sweat and tears working on my car not to mention a lot of money in it. I can also guarantee that I work mostly by trial and error and that is a hard way to learn and it is slow. So, here is half of your white elephant stepping out in plain sight, probably looking down the barrel of a few rifles...so be it.

I have been a member here for 8 years....10 years on NATO and turboford.org.
This is a pretty good site. Not as nice as NATO...but nicer than TF.
That being said I have owned a tbird, cougar, or regal in one shape or other for 22 years. Being that I'm 38 that says something. Love the big coupes, my children don't mind getting in the back seat!
Besides they love the power! :-)
I have owned quite a few newer rides...gxp, sho, diesel rams, Chevy trucks, crown Victoria
But I always come back to the big coupes. I have met some really good people from these forums. Yeah the grumpy types can be a drain...but such as life....and the internet. Our cars are reaching the end of there daily driver life's...which is fine.... But the 426 hemi sites are already there and have trouble with members....blah blah blah.
Thanks
Travis

I believe there is one main culprit that is always in an argument regardless of who else is arguing. As you had said, it takes at least 2 people for an arguement. Unfortunatly, I must admit to my part of it. I have stopped visiting the site as much as before, and have limited my posts. Funny thing is, in my absense, the bickering continues. An arguement about oil filters...........really? I find most of my info I need now from Coolcats.
Title: Why is it so quiet in here?
Post by: TOM Renzo on May 08, 2013, 11:51:22 AM
There is a lot to know about oil FILTERS!!!
I find this interesting as some people do not want info that they actually ask for . It seems like they wait for someone to post what they want to hear. Normally that is the facts. No one wants to hear what they did is not correct or dooms day for their car. So they wait for an answer that is in line with there thinking. That is what happened with the filters. I posted cut open filters to show the difference and then the post stopped. Some posted that they only change oil once a year. And from people that are really knowledgeable. So it is like i said people wait for the answer they want to here. With that all the sites i visit seem to be the same. Me personally I post things i think are correct as other do also. I personally HATE certain kinds of cars others do not. And some actually own cars that i think are . Bottom line people like me in the car business only see cars when they are broken. Not cars as a hobby or a Sunday driving vehicle. So i tend to go over bord on repairs. Thunder Chicken is like me he makes his living with cars and he generally agrees on things with a different perspective. Just me
Also with Gas at or around 4 bucks a gallon no one really wants an old clunker gas guzzler these days. So in the future when these big cars as i have been told several times by people and they call them GAS GUZZLER. Will eventually die out. And then whenever i pull up to a gas pump there are still people that tell me they had the exact car when they were young. With that i give them my standard answer. NOPE YOU DID NOT HAVE ONE LIKE THIS ONE!!!

So true! ;)
Some of my projects have been stalled while I prepare a vehicle for sale. Sure I could list it as-is (while pulling my stereo and reinstalling the factory one), but I spend time fixing up blemishes, getting rid of rattles, etc, to make the sale easier, and make the new owner happier with the purchase. Changing daily drivers, being busy with work, and spring time outdoor yard maintenance means my time gets shifted around differently. Everything will get much easier when I don't have 4 cars to move around to make use of my garage with room for 1.
I still haven't finished everything I wanted to do after the head swap. My tubular intake is still waiting for polishing. Since bolting everything together and changing the oil, the car gets moved in and out of the garage but that's it. I haven't bolted the air cleaner back in place, re-routed wiring that is out of place, etc. Hell, I need to plug in my wideband and get some datalogs of the vehicle so I can adjust the tune. Then there's the now-noisy cat that needs to be replaced - new mid-pipe for me! Lots of work that I'd like to do, but spring time is always busy, and having picked up a new car weeks ago means there has been a lot of other work needed, and dmv trips. I've been swamped.

Besides kinda insane to make a 3600lb w/o driver car fast with a 2.3T.

Of course the NATO site has less overall content and tech info than this site - It's a more specialized site that covers one specific type of T-Bird.

I do not have a Face book account. My wife and i agreed it is to dangerous to do that. I have read issues where bad things have happened to posters. Not only personal but also robbery's ETC. This may not be true but i am not computer savvy about things like that. Can you chime in on that???? Also NATO is a good site for TC info but they are a click forum and if you are not in the click you are out. TF is another forum if you are an outsider you are OUT!!! They do not take a liking to new members. They are real nasty at times and i find this fascinating as they deal with cars that in there best day can make 400 RWH. Nothing to impress many people. But they think that is assume. Just me that is my experience. But then again i can be a real pain in the ass. I learned a lot about sites to late when i was on those sites. Like i said i can be a real pain in the ass. I admit that!!! :hick::hick:
Both NATO and TF have a couple of sharp guys no question about that. Nato is basically a car club rather than an info site. They have one main guy and TF has a couple of good guys on issues. But the basic forums are very clickie!!
You're shiznittin' us right??? Even after you were banned from those sites, I haven't seen you've learned anything... If I were running the show you wouldn't be here either...

i like this site...and the stright shooting people with solid advice day after day. how do we contribute to keep it going? didnt know there was a way,, i do know about coolcatsl.net contributions.
two toms in the same yard usually ends in a s : )
i can see the both of you in a competition in a two bay garage. there is a 4000psi concrete blast wall separating the two bays ~as well as the both of you..... TC50 is riggin up an am band transmitter paralled with a magnatron encabulator reflectorator that triggers a spike in the Renzo projects radio which is addiitonally designed to backfeed through the radio to smoke check the EEC, blow all fuses and leave the horn in a constant audible discharge state and pushing the battery directly into thermal runaway. While TC50 was "all that and a bag of chips", Renzo was core drilling the floor , up and under the TC50 project quickly followed by 208 3phase 5hp motor tied to a shiznit pipe snake driving a greenlee stepper bit right directly into the tc50 project punching right through his floor then the fuse panel, quickly removing the shiznit snake, thus no longer guilty, leaving the stepper bit wedged and strategically placed, something amazing happens.........
the both of you step around the corner and say "hey man, i got this f'ing problem................................."

I still love this sight regardless of it's "problems". You know how much time, money and headaches have been saved by this site for me? Too many to count. It does make me ill knowing the ole girl is locked in a storage garage though. There are world class peeps over here doing amazing stuff. The big thing now is getting the dash redone to house your Ipad. If it hasnt been done already, imagine an app to control your cars heater/ac, lights, etc through an Ipad. Perhaps, to revive some comraderie, we should get a poll 0f all members here and try to get Year One, or someone, to start doing repo stuff for us.

Anyway i will take what you said as as an indication that either you hate the things i have accomplished or you just dont like ME. Thanks for your true feelings. And yes i have learned the hard way. But sometimes learning takes time as i now realize i was the cause of that and i am sorry for it. But what i do and have accomplished is FACT. Anyone can tell by reading my posts knows i did not fall off a TURNIP TRUCK LAST NIGHT. Been doing this all my life not only as a business owner as a car builder. If i have offended you i am sorry. And apologize to the forum!!!
After your chest beating and abrasive posts on NATO & here I've never paid any attention to what vehicles you own, other than the TC and I believe Syclone?, don't have a clue(and can't tell you anything about either)... You spent a large portion of the last couple years on my ignore list(the only one ever)...
Anyway not all of us are impressed with your signature, I've always spent my money more wisely, at least IMHO(allowed me to retire eight years ago at age 55)... I haven't worked a money making job since which was exactly the plan... Now there is plenty of free time to do what I want and enjoy the twin grand-kids that were born less than a year after my retirement... One thing for sure, life isn't all about me and my accomplishments...
Above said, I commend your tech assistance in the recent TC brake issue thread, MAYBE you are finally realizing it isn't necessary to run over others with a my way or no way attitude...

I honestly want to know why you want us to hold you on some pedestal. There are people who HAVE done more then you in the car world believe it or not.

I spent 26+ years at a place that employed over 10,000 people. I spent most of that time watching people with families who never seemed to want to go home. I always wondered who if anyone was raising their children. They would spend 12 hour days 7 days a week because they seemed to believe that their job made them who they are. They all seemed to think that some day they would be remembered by all as the "Best" or "Great" **** of all time. What I saw was they would never retire to enjoy what life they had left or if they did retire they would die within a short time because they never knew how to really enjoy life. All I ever heard anyone say about them after they were gone was "Gee that's too bad". With in a very short time you never heard people talk about them anymore. Sad thing is Zombies really do exist.

not to get anyone thinking too much but.......
yeah,, it is a little more quiet but................... the top reason for most collaborative sucess stories is.............
"vigorous internal debate with a united front"
that means all of us

I learn a lot from argumentative posts, even if there not always completely right. I never would have thought about doing the t-5's swap without the research skills I learned from this site.
just remember, we all have the same goal when anyone needs help.

Tom hit the nail on the head there. the moderation here has become a joke, and they figure its best to just ignore it and let the ass's be that and drve away the people that made this site and gave it such a good rep as being a friendly family environment. what a joke. thank god catjam is no more i could just imagine what it would be like now. cat jam use to be like a family reunion and i tottaly miss it, and the way this site use to be. now it isnt worth checking in on much anymore. which is why im not around very often

Well RJ, it appears that you're laying down the problems here solely at my feet. And that, of course, is your opinion.
I am here often enough to see what's going on. There's quite a lot of bitterness. I'm not a bitter person, therefore, I do not partite. If someone else wants to, fine, but I'm not going to. Handling bitterness is a YOU problem, not mine.
There are plenty of things that, I'm sure, could be clamped down. We are not known for clamping things down around here (Hitler tried that...didn't work out so well). The moderators are just as busy as I am. It's not possible to scour every single thing that goes awry. We are not here to babysit anyone, as I'm sure you'd like to be respected enough as adults, even though quite a few don't act it.
How much exactly did you or anyone pay to be on this board? Oh, not a penny? We didn't gouge your wallet? Then you get what you paid for. Take it or leave it. I don't exactly see a mass exodus out of here.
As for me, I contribute what I can, when I can. And that's about all I'm willing to give anymore.

Just me.... I think this is a great site and am very thankful it is here. I contribute when I can, and appreciate when people help me.
I dont think it is over or under moderated, but I can overlook alot, and if I dont want to read a argument thread, I have the ability to just click the "back" button.
Thank you to Eric and all the moderators and fellow members, I think its a great forum for our cars.

i didnt post that to piss you off or dis respect you personally eric, but i did finally evoke a mod to respond :)
i didnt think you were the only moderator here anymore Eric. if you are then ya i guess i laid it soley at your feet. anyone here that has been here for years (and is still here, which isnt many) can see the changes in the attitude of the board. i can remember the mods letting a bit go, but then stepping in to say enough is enough. but even that doesnt happen anymore. as stated, thats my opinon of what has happened here, as thats why i and quite a few others stopped coming around. you cant post one thing here anymore with out someone arguing it or it trialing off to some irrelevant things that has nothing to do with the topic. i remember the days where that wasnt tolerated just saying.
and yes i understand people get busy and priorities shift. hell back when i was first on here i was basically single. now i am married with 2 boys, who are raise to love tbird's hell they are already arguing over who gets mine

six negative posts out of 53 thus far,, 88.67% success rate.
for a "best price" vs best cost, im thinking we are in the upper .001% of successful forums out there per capita with respect to all the wealth of knowledge we have gathered. Complaining about "one item" when you have 1000 times more items available to you 24x7 when your stuff is broke doesnt really add up.
having said it that way, i hope a few ebrows raised,, hopefully the thought just sank in that "this is a great place"
the big picture is sometimes only as big as you allow it to be.
when i had my nuts busted in the past, did you see me complaining??????? Yep you sure did but i got over and moved on seems to me there is some background noise of making light of one particular member ,,, see past the supidz and move on for petes sake. like i said and truely belive, vigorous internal debate with a united front is healty to a degree, at the end of the day its your back button you control.

Well looks like RJ and myself are on the same side of the fence... I fully agree it's administrations problem that was basically ignored and allowed to fester... Clearly some of the inmates have been allowed to run the asylum...
The mention of Hitler is a joke, EVERY SUCCESSFUL board has at least some moderation... Even on the minimally moderated boards members understand there is a line that if crossed will not be tolerated(it's made clear here that religion and politics are not to be discussed, apparently that works)... It doesn't require someone constantly scanning the board to make sure everyone toes the line 100% of the time, only give a warning now and then... Of course there are a few that will continually push the limits and usually sooner or later are banned...Can't say I've ever missed anyone that was banned from any board I partite...
If you've lost interest then it's time to move on to greener pastures... I suspect had the issues been addressed early on, this board would still be lot more friendly and have members that enjoy themselves when visiting... PLUS maybe you would have a better feeling toward the board as well...

IMO, in addition to what was already said, is that most of us who remember these cars and want to own one, are probably at that age now where a mortgage and family are taking precedence. Minivan anyone? The rest are either into old ratrods, muscle cars, and/or the new fartcan Hondas.

what are the issues that are running everyone off? I know Mr renzo comes off as a bit abrasive often , but it shouldn't be enough to run someone off...

Well maybe we ought to give you the reigns, Tom. You're already on your high shaging horse anyway. You want to be a mod? PM one of us. Be my guest. Run the board how you want.
Oh, and Happy Mother's Day.
There, I moderated something. Ought to keep a few people happy.
