My wife has a 1998 explorer. The radio is a premium unit with rear controls as well. Problem the dial is shot and the digital display is BURNT OUT. Also the CD player is the worst. It skips constantly. I want to install an aftermarket unit. Nothing special just a good radio with CD. So i need an adapter to make the job easy and use the original wiring. PLUG AND PLAY you might say. Can i do this and what is the quickest and easiest way. Also how do i make it fit without modifying the dash. I just want to install it as fast and easy as possible. Thanks Radios are not my thing. THEY DONT MAKE THE CAR FASTER. Thanks

got to crutchfield, and search your make and model....they have all the wiring connectors and adaptor plates for an easy install.
I just installed one for my wife today in the lincoln.... touchscreen, dvd, bu camera, bluetooth, the works.....
Tom you can buy adapters from nearly any Wal Mart that will allow wiring the new radio in, using connectors so that the stock wiring isn't hacked up.
My '97 Mountaineer's stock 6 disc changer blows. Skips so bad I can't use it.
Good info thanks guys. I have no clue about this radio stuff. Will check those places Thanks a lot TOM
I only meant that one should buy the adapters from wal mart, not a stereo or speakers...
You can parts swap from another unit, the faceplate of the stocker is held on by 4 t10 screws (2 top, 2 bottom) and uses a socketed connector. Plug and play. There are no bulbs to change as the display is a VFD. You can also swap the changer caddy, but that's a bit delicate. Otherwise Crutchfield (http://"http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Car/outfitmycar/car.aspx") has good stuff and they offer free shipping and installation hardware. I don't know if it matters to you, but I'm pretty sure your stocker was built by Clarion. You WILL lose the rear controls.
Thanks FOE
Crutchfield still has what you need. You need a mounting kit and a connector kit, BUT you'll need a special one that uses the vehicles existing amp, as with premium sound, the speakers are connected to IT rather than the head unit. I believe you'll need THIS (http://"http://www.crutchfield.com/p_120705517/Receiver-Wire-Harness.html") one (assuming you have Mach audio).
Th
I would agree about the wiring adapter...there are two or more options for Ford/premium sound, so you may not get the right one the first time. I believe the one I used was made by Metra, but it's been a while. I got mine at Best Buy, it was in stock in the car installation area.
Thirty days old, man. I think he's probably all set.
Yes i still cant find the adapter i need. My wife Danny is pissed for sure!!!:hick::hick::beatyoass:
