http://www.carthrottle.com/carthrottle-asks-grand-national-or-turbocoupe-with-poll/ pretty cool article, and most of the Turbocoupe information seems right, unlike other articles were they call it the Supercoupe and say it was supercharged 4 cylinder.
This was about the only part that is wrong, far as I can tell ;)
I always thought the GN taillights looked like the aero Cougars.

0-60 in 4.9 seconds?
surely not?
i'd happily own a GN if i could get hold of one.
technically that's not wrong since the scoops fed the intercooler, which is a fancy word for heat extractor ;)
Unfortunately, being the owner of a Foxbody, I would have to choose the G-Body. I had an 88 Monte Carlo LS that I built a warmed over 350 to replace the 305. That car hauled ass, full frame, parts were cheap and lots of conversion stuff + restoration body parts available. I have seen a GNX in action, they are quite the masterpiece of making a v6 do something incredible. They sound like a small jet taking off.
Friend of mine had an '81 Cutlass with a swapped in Olds 350. Was like driving a very comfy couch, albeit one with some hellish get-up 'n go. There was no way to do a full throttle acceleration with the tires on it.
Thread title is misleading. GN =/= GNX.
No manual trans avail in the GN is a no go for me. I don't care how fast it'll go in a straight line, esp when it handles like a pig.
It was 4.7 seconds for the GNX with I think right around 300 hp in those. Blew everything away back then, amazing.
Ahahaha Chuck was thinking it was a street race video I just know it.
OK first off a GN and a GNX is two totally different cars. Same body and engine but a world of difference. Below is a GNX. This one has extensive mods. But in the real world the GN would eat a TC for lunch. And the GNX is totally a different story.

And everyone compares the GN to the TYPHOON and the CYCLONE. The article is WRONG!!! The SY-TY came with a 4.3 and the GN-GNX had a 3.8. Everyone says the GMC based off the GN-GNX it is not those engines are totally different. Any way i have them all so it makes no difference to me. But the stock TC compared to the 3 GM cars mentioned is a win for the GM BOYS. TRUST ME!!

It sucks that ford undermined the thinderbird so much because they didnt want it to take the mustangs glory the thunderbird could have been something as wanted and coveted as the grand nationals
And sorry Chuck i thought they were comparing the gnx to the turbocoupe
NONE OF THOSE PHOTOS ARE OF A GNX. They compared a GN NOT A GNX. The GNX is totally different in many many ways. More HP and torque suspension and much more HP than a GN. Totally two different cars. TRUST ME.
And here is my TYPHOON It has a Garrett Turbo and 22 lbs of boost 4 wheel drive and a 4.3 not a 3.8 as people believe. This truck is beyond FAST.

TRUE but converting it to a 6 speed is a piece of cake. Trust me. And the GNX and GN for that matter do not handle like a PIG. To the contrary they handle fairly well for the time they were built. THE GNX has a totally different suspension and they handle QUITE WELL!!!
Tom, you'd love to see the GNX a local GM dealer has. It is in his sealed, climate-controlled basp00get and has never been titled. It is quite literally as the day it rolled off the assembly line, including still being covered in all the plastic that is normally removed during PDI. Technically, since it has never been titled, were he to sell it today it would still have factory warranty. He keeps it in his basp00get and only a privileged few have ever laid eyes on it. Among those few are his employees, and as I worked for him for a few months I was given a peek. If it were possible to have shag with a car I'd have done so then and there, and wouldn't care who was watching. The saddest thing is that the dealer isn't even a car guy, he's just a business man and put the car away as an investment because it was so limited production (you think a GNX is rare, imagine how rare a GNX is with factory metric gauges - Canada typically gets about 10% of US production). Sigh... what a waste of a GNX...
Nice Typhoon, BTW. I've always loved the SyTy...
And sadly, yes, the GN would suck a stock TC up one tailpipe and blow it out the other. It's sad that GM didn't let the Camaro get in the way of fast G-bodies the way Ford did with the Mustang Vs T-Bird (sad for Ford guys, I mean - for GM guys it's great). It would have been interesting had Ford put the SC 3.8 into production Fox bodies... or better yet, the twice-turbo'd 3.8 they were working on way back when. I have pic of the prototype engine and a small article about it around here somewhere - it was said to produce over 300 horses, not bad for the 80's. It probably didn't make production because it almost certainly would have had reliability issues...
WOW A GNX with a 100% no mileage odometer. That is something else. That car is worth big dollars. But dont fret the new FORD engine has 100 more wheel HP than the VETTE. So Ford is doing real wonders after all. Thanks for telling this story it is amazing to actually think a ZERO mileage GNX is somewhere in a BAsp00geT. Totally awsum and thank you for sharing this with us THUNDER. Simply amazing!!
Check this out THUNDER. Another one in california.
This is a GNX.

Nifty cars but they never really blew my skirt up enough to seek one out. I prefer the tbirds/tcoupes much better. Money and value asside, I'd rather a showroom zero mile never titled 88 turbo coupe in a favorable color combo and stick over any of those ^^^
You must be easily pleased in life. Those BUICK'S are NASTY FAST AND HANDLE MUCH BETTER THAN A TC, Just me could be wrong
No, You are correct on the matter. I respect them, I just do not prefer them. Those Buick's are faster and likely out handle a turbo coupe. Great cars. Turbo coupe has always had more class though. If you don't understand that I don't know what to tell you. If all you are worried about is who's faster, handles better or what not, get yourself a Hyabusa. Also, mid 13 second cars are NOT nasty fast. Maybe back in the 80s sure but certainly not by today's standards. If you're not running in the 10s or better you're not raising eyebrows.
