Those grilles and spoilers pop up for sale every once in a while. The wheels look like the metric wheels that were on the Birds, Cougars, Stangs and Capris.

The grille and spoiler were FMS add-on parts that you could buy rom Ford dealerships back then and are actually fairly valuable today. The wheels are TRX, a factory option back then that required a special metric Michelin tire that has been out of production for decades, and are worth s prices today. One of our members has cut up a set and made hubcaps out of them, which look really good on his 17" chrome rims...

Really? That's the ugliest car you've ever seen? You really missed the Aztek, Rendezvous, X90, Juke, Cube, Murano, Element, Ridgeline, Matador, Gremlin, Pacer, 4th Gen (Catfish face) Camaro, and the rest (If I were to go through the ages and list all the automotive abortions this would be a very lenghtly list indeed)? That early 80's T-Bird with a period correct factory designed and sold modification is really the ugliest car you've ever seen? Would that I were so lucky to have never been exposed to any of these others... ;)

But on the topic of fox Bird prototypes, how about this one?

metric tires are still avalible, for over $400 dollars a tire. i wish they would come down, or make a repop in a 15 or 16. the ones on the mustang are different then the ones on the tbird. different design. as far as the car, i think its straight out of the 80s awesome.

I like them both! There's a member on here that has that grill on thier Bird. A very good friend of mine has the other grill FMS offered back then. It doesn't stick out like this one. He's not decided to use it yet.

I like them both too , the one Carm posted reminds me of the Mark VII pace car they used as the basis forth the Roush GTC Lincolns

Years ago, I stumbled upon a four-eye Thunderbird in a junkyard that was fitted with the FMS parts, including the side skirts and three-pedestal spoiler. I bought the pieces and held onto them for a while. Another forum member now owns them. That spoiler is a hell of a lot heavier than it looks.

Years ago I had a similar find in another junkyard and left the stuff there because I didn't have a four-eye. I seem to remember offering to buy the parts and sell them to someone on this forum but there was no interest so I didn't get the stuff. The car was a base '86 V6 with column shifter and full console but no other options. I bought the console and tray but left the rest there...

If you look closely you can see four individual lights behind each of those smoked covers. This car was a PPG pace car for an indycar racing series back then. They've done several one-offs, including a Fiero and a Mark VII (with T--tops!). Just google "PPG Pace Car" and you'll see some of their weird 80's pace cars. Info on the Mark can be found here: http://web.atmc.net/~snonnenman/PPGCar.htm

I have stock TRX's on my car, and Jerry was kind enough to handle a Craigslist deal for me and ship me a like new set of tires for my car.  I paid $200 + shipping for the set! Thats the only reason I'm going to run them for now.  I really like the look of them on these cars.  The Thunderbird TRX's have to be one of the rarest wheels out there, as they are the same size as the Mustang TRX's but are a different design.

The correct sized tires for the TRX wheels straight from pen 15er are cheaper, but still up there.....

Then again, I'm on the hunt for an '81 Toyota Starlet to do as my next project.....

I love big 70s boats too!  I was just telling my wife that yesterday as she shook her head.  I'm pretty sure it is a '74 Impala in that pic.  My first car was a '74 Caprice.  It is pretty prehistoric looking sitting next to the Thunderbird.

My parents had a '81 Olds Ninety-Eight us kids all had to drive when we first got our license.  Sometimes I wish I had that thing back for a cruiser.  403 motor, power everything, big cushy velour seats that were comfortable like a La Z boy, and it floated down the road.  Thing was built like a tank too.

There's a local kid with one all fixed up (same maroon color as my parents old one).  He has blacked out windows and big rims on it...it actually looks pretty cool.

heh you think that's something, try comparing a fox bird to a 94-97 mn12 bird side by side. When I had my two it was mind blowing how much more modern the mn12 was.

Agreed, but the radical departure of the 83 left everything else behind it, in terms of design.  The MN-12 was far more modern, but compared to the existing design was just a evolutionary step.  JMHO

My parents had a maroon 81 Delta too that both us kids drove, we traveled the country in that car pulling a trailer, and an 81 F150 pulling a horse trailer w/ all our belongings (can't imagine how many gallons of gas my parents paid for) lucky enough my first car was an 80 Tbird just like the one in my sig right down to the options list and rims, except with more paint and less surface rust (trunk floor was pretty well gone though).  I always loved t-birds even as a young child, then I drove one and became obsessed!....True story

Thanks guys!

Since this picuture, I installed mesh behind the grill.  It did give it more a finished look and the "stuff" behind it is hidden.

I'll be adding black to the center of the grill (with tape initially to see how it looks).  The space of the emblem is kinda big and looks like it should be a different color or something.  Making it black may tie into the black on the bumper and pull the look together better.
