Title: Just installed remote entry
Post by: bryan163 on April 03, 2012, 12:12:10 AM
I just installed a Bulldog remote keyless entry system. Been wanting one for a while, It was $50 from Autozone.

I also had to replace my driver side lock actuator

New(left) and old(right) lock actuators. Autozone wanted $230 for one, but I got it on ebay for $25 shipped.

The actuator was held in with a large rivet. I drilled that out and replaced it with a cap screw when I reinstalled it.

I might have to. 50 bucks huh? That's not bad! I know I like having that option in our newer cars. Your car looks great! I like the new pic you just posted for you sig.

Thanks, figured it was about time to update the sig since I did the TC hood a while ago. And yeah, my other car has remote entry and since I started using the bird as my daily driver again I was really missing that feature. I'm definitely gonna hook up the trunk relay too. Probably use the 4th button to roll down the windows remotely now that summer is coming, unless anyone has a better idea what to do with it.

were you door locks originally electric or manual?

We had a remote start put in my Fusion and the star button is the one used to start it. There's an idea for ya.

Base92, I'd say they were already power. I've not seen an 87-88 that wasn't.

Yeah, it had power locks. Remote start is an option.

Mine's not!!!!! Same for the windows! That's why I needed those pics of the doors from you so I could figure out how to put all that in;)

I have to INSTALL a set of power locks before I can do that. But I'm probably gonna just do it anyway before then so I can have the trunk pop feature. I didn't realize the thing was so cheap. I might go do it myself now. Oh and might I just say that SC wheel is freakin awesome. I'm gonna be puttin a 89-93 cougar wheel in now.

If you guys decide to do it let me know. I will give you some specific info on the wiring for our cars that the universal kit cant tell you. Such as what color the wires in our harness are and which of the 3 possible wiring schematics they give applies to us.

i wonder how long this kit will last.. not saying boo, hissss, autozone junk.. i'm just really curious.. since i build mini trucks, which involves shaving door handles, i use remote keyless entry systems constantly.. the kit i usually use costs about double what you paid ($95 and change + shipping)

wiring schematics won't help me since its all custom wiring. Even the trunk pop switch I had to hardwire in myself. But thanks for the offer:)

oh yeah as for the fourth button it might be kinda cool to set it to where it turns on your parking/tail lights while you've got the button pressed. You know so you can find it at night or freak people out or whatever ya know.

I have always wanted remote entry and this post just might be the post I need to give me the push to do it.  If it wouldn't be too much trouble to post the wiring specifics, I would appreciate it.

I wonder if aftermarket remote entry systems are compatible with the factory keyless entry keypad?

I picked up this keyless entry system from Autozone today.  I had $20 on my Autozone rewards car so I only paid $30 bucks!  Would you be able to post the wiring specifics that apply to our cars?  Also, did you have to buy the optional relay for the parking lights and for the trunk?  I have an EVTM and can do wiring pretty well but I figured I would ask since you just went through it.

Sorry i didnt post the wiring info yet. I gotta pull the kick panel and write down what colors i used. I'll try to do it tomorrow after work. For the lights, I ended up using the relay they give you for the start disabler. The harness they give you with the relay had to be altered and the colors in the instructions dont apply to that harness, so I had to use common sense.

Awesome, thanks!  I was thinking about using the supplied relay for the lights also.  I wasn't planning on using the starter disable just out of paranoia that the unit will fail and I will get stranded somewhere, lol.  I probably have another relay laying around that I could use for the trunk too.

I just finished installing the keyless entry.  It's awesome!  Pretty easy to do too.  I installed mine under the passenger seat.

Nice job! I was a little paranoid about using the start disabler too. People are always having issues with those things. One of my friends just had to remove an aftermarket system from his truck for that reason. Sorry I wasn't much help. I had to leave the car at work so I could take my van home this week. The lights appear to be working exactly like mine.

You were plenty of help!  I wouldn't have gone out and got the kit if it weren't for you going first, lol.

Last summer I found a NOS Ford remote system. It is intended to be installed by the dealer. I think it was about $50 also. My Cougar has the keyless entry system so it was a fairly easy project. Mostly laying upside down under the dash. It is nice to open the trunk remotely.
