It goes on the back of the instrument cluster, I don't know what it's called though.

Yeah i took it off the back because it was burning hot.

I believe it's the ivr, it lowers the voltage feeding your gauges and is pr0ne to failure. Somewhere there's a thread on how to make a better one.

/\Thanks, Didnt know what it was either besides some kind of weird fuse or jumper.
I could see rust as a potential problem with it, Try cleaning the contacts and such maybe.

^ what I thought, is it necessary?, because gauges seem to work fine without it.

it is a resistor for the cluster illumination.
it allows you to dim the light down low.
i took mine out when i put in LED's.
if you keep your cluster fully light with out dimming you dont need it. but if you turn it down it helps making them dim.
thats the reason it got hot.
