Title: Ok, New Year's Resolutions, let's hear 'em
Post by: Thunder Chicken on January 01, 2012, 08:26:31 PM
Yes, it's that time of year again. Time to set goals, whether they be for personal improvement, or for financial reasons, or to start or complete a project, automotive or otherwise.
Here are my personal goals:
First and foremost, I will lose 50 pounds, and I will do so by May 1. I lost 100 pounds in six months a few years ago. Sadly, I lapsed and put half of that weight back on, so it's time to shift gears again. Crash diet starts today.
I also plan on getting back into shape, not just weight wise, but strength/stamina wise as well. This was another goal I'd achieved a few years ago but had lapsed. Granted I don't have so far to go this time around (thanks to having a job I'm constantly on the go), but still...
I will have another toy car (IE project car). Dunno if it'll be a Fox BirdCat, but there will hopefully be an old car in my driveway by this time next year, pending the sale of this house and setting up in another. I'm actually leaning toward either a 77-78 Trans Am or a C3 Vette. The Firebird for nostalgia (my first and second cars were a 78 T/A and an 80 Formula, respectively), the Corvette because I've always liked C3 Vettes and they're dirt cheap to buy. Either one would get an LSx engine, just because I want the looks of the old car but the driveability and reliability of a new one. Don't worry, some day I'll have another FoxBirdCat (and if the right four-eye Bird happens to stumble along before the Vette or F-body it just may happen sooner rather than later) but I want something different this time around...
Those are my "cast-in-stone" resolutions. They will happen (again, the car will depend on the sale of the house I'm in).
"Cast-In-Jello" resolutions, meaning that I'm not even sure whether I want them to happen or not, are:
RCMP. As some of you may remember, I'd gotten an acceptance letter to join the RCMP about a year and a half ago. They wrote me the letter saying I was in, got my hopes up, then called me a week later and told me that although I was accepted there was a waiting list, and that it'd be at least a year. I was later told it was more than two years. In the meantime I've gotten out of the job I hated and into one I like, and have generally lost interest in the whole RCMP thing. Some things the recruiter told me have turned me off (such as the virtual guarantee that I'd be posted to rural Alberta, Saskatchewan or Manitoba), and their radio advertisp00gets have really turned me off as well - they say they're hiring, but only "young aboriginals". The racism in that me off to no end, and if I'm going to move out west it'll be as a mechanic, where I'll make more money doing something I know I can do well and don't have to worry about being shot at. I really don't know what I'd do if I were to get the phone call tomorrow...
Out west. To continue the statement about moving out west and making more money, I've been loosely thinking that once my house sells I may just pull up stakes and head to Alberta. I could literally double what I'm making out there, and even more. Houses are more expensive, but everything else is cheaper. Much cheaper. Everything from food to fuel, and taxes are much lower too. Add in that this province (Nova Scotia) is falling apart thanks to no money, no ambition, and a government that seems to be actively trying to make this the poorest province in the nation (we're already #3, may as well go for #1) and I'm just about ready to say fvck it and head for the land of milk and honey. For example, our government recently raised sales tax to 15% because they need the money, then turned around and gave $50 million away to an American owned pulp mill to keep 100 people working because the company was threatening to close it because nobody is buying paper anymore (and to add insult to injury they also raised our power rates 10% so they could lower rates for the mill)...
So those are some of my resolutions. Let's hear yours, keeping in mind that if you post them here this thread will exist so you can hold your head in triumph should you succeed :headbang: or hang it in shame should you fail :beatyoass:

To put my god Tbird on the road legally, in a fit shape as to be seen and not laughed at as I'm driving it...(they can laugh at me all they want, laugh at the car and I'll stop and yank out the bitch-be-good stick and refresh their attitudes).
There's a lot of things I'm going to try to better about myself.

i only have 4.. lol
- get back in 100% riding condition and start racing in the NBL again (national bicycle league).. i miss it, i stopped when i was 16 and got into micros.. i want to start racing regionals and nationals again, they're the most fun
- run the capri in a few 8.50 index races at atco.. i need to do some suspension tweaking, since i'm running drag radials now that measure about 9.5 and sometimes lose grip
- FINISH ALL MY PROJECTS and pick up a 60 something 4 door car and turn it into a 2 door project.. something i've been wanting to do for some time now
- and i saved the most important for last.. MOVE TO DELAWARE.. we had to put it on hold after 2 houses falling through, because my dog is part chow.. my fat, sissy dog, is considered a 'vicious animal..' so now we're looking to buy sometime in the spring, which actually works out for me, because we can work it into the mortgage for my shop, if there isn't already a decent size building on the property

I don't make resolutions, but I do make plans/set goals.
For this year, the plan I have set out for myself is to run 4-5 1/2-marathon races (mostly off-road, but at least one will be a road race) in addition to the 5- 5K trail race series I'll be doing in the summer.
First 1/2 marathon is at the end of the month...in the dark. Should be fun.
The goals are a 1:45-1:50 1/2-marathon time on the trail, and 1:35-1:40 on the road, as well ashiznitting a sub-24-minute 5K trail race this year. I had a 2:00 trail 1/2-marathon back in Oct, and did a 24:40 5K trail race over the summer this past year.

It was given to a buddy of mine from his mother in law. He had no need for it, so he gave it to me. Being a 25 inch it was better than the 19 inch I was using. This was about 4 years ago. Now I have a 32 inch flat screen. Soon I will have Dish upgrade me to HD

I have two 1986 model TVs that still work fine, one is the first 35" model we sold at Sears(Sayno built), was a $3300 TV in it's day... No I didn't buy it, was a freebee in '98 cause it had a obsolete power supply chip that was bad, I'd already stashed a couple as I'd hoped one would turn up...

#1, gonna try to quit smoking. I have been in the 2-3 packs a day range, and wasted a colossal amount of money on it. 31st, went two days smoking one prime time, and the last two days without any. One cigarette in 4 days. I figure if I can make it through the next two days I should be in the clear. I have some patches to fall back on incase I get a craving, but I am going to try cold turkey first. Calling this one done, 1-8-12
#2, get a job. I am going through a divorce right now. After the wife walked out on me, I ended up moving back into my dad's house. I want to get a job I am not killing myself at. I was forced to quit my last job after getting bronchitis. They said they couldn't give me the 3 or 4 days off I wanted while I was on anti-biotics. Now to find something I am actually good at, and spend some money on myself for a change.
#3, get my ged. I dropped out when I was 17, got pretty lucky. Got some pretty good jobs ad it hasn't been too much of an issue. It is something that I personally want to do. Need a job first though.
#4, going to do my best to find an 86 cougar. I am done with the plastic headlights, and I want something to throw money into.
(Added after finishing #1) #5, join a gym at some point in time. I feel as if I am getting lazy. I do not have a weight problem, being 6'5" and short of 200 lbs, but I feel I have a lot of wasted energy, and now at the age of almost 25, I already think I am going to hate getting old. Maybe I should get a bike when I go on short little trips, like the grocery store, or instead of going on a walk.

My resolution is to A: get to the drag strip this year. I didnt go at all in 2011. And B: to break 11's with my Maxima and 13's with my thunderbird. This would be much easier if we had a track here, but the closest track is 200 miles and its not a very good one. I have already completed most of the work to the cars. Just gotta get out there and do this.

I'm calling it good for now. I have never made it more then 3 days, and always went straight back to what I was before or worse. Now I feel I could turn down a smoke, or even not smoke if I did have some. The last couple times I tried, the head aches owned me within 2 day. This time they were there, but wern't as bad. I think the only difference is I actually wanted to quit this time, and before it was a money thing. If I had money I wouldn't have even tried.
However, only time will tell. A lot of the reason I've been sucessful though, I feel anyways, is most of my freinds quit, and I am not around it.

Hey bob, you too. I know how I missed this. I would really like to see a 351 with a florida shaped hole in the hood driving on the treet this year.
I have had many many issues with sleep, right now I'm am just shy of 72 hours without sleep. I have a lot of personalthings all coming to a head in the last couple of months though. I think once I get through all of those things, I will be much better off. I have been staying asleep much longer though. Most of the reason I quit my last job, I have been going days to a week without sleep, and in the construction industry, that kills your back quick. Its hard for me to stay entertained while being able to rest my back enough.
And thunderchicken, you don't have a problem losing weight, just keeping it off. I was amazed at how quickly you lost it last time.

Me?
To stop worrying so much. Even after I get sound advice from knowledgeable persons who assure me things are OK I always gravitate toward a worst case scenario in my mind that usually is impossible in real life.
That and quit smoking. I actually did quit for just shy of 3 years and started again in 2010..... THe reason? Stress/worrying.

So, with january almost over, I am done with msoking. As long as I can stay away from a relapse, calling it done for sure. Now, I just received part of my tax return. I am going to sign up for a ged. Going to try to get this done before I start looking for work.I am starting to think a bike will do better financially and physically buying a new car, or driving mine. I am also going to sign up for a gym in the next week.
If everything goes well, I will have most of my new years resolutions done before the end of febuary.

So I have been slacking...
I have smoked... but only two and I got away from its grips again. I promised my friend I would quit smoking with him at the end of december. He is a newlywed and moved out and I didn't hear anything from him. About two weeks ago he showed up and asked me to smoke one last cigarette with him. He didn't know I quit, and I decided I owed it to him. The that one turned into two, but by the time I was half way through the second, I started to feel really sick.
My stomach has bothered me since I was a small child. My family has a genetic defect where some of us are missing the valve between your stomach and esophagous(sp?). The last couple year it had been getting much worse, constant acid reflux, always felt like I would throw up, ect. I assumed it was normal, but it has more or less gone away since I quit smoking, so I plan to never go back. I have though about the surgery to get my stomach fixed, but they put a one way valve in so you can't burp, and your on your back for 6 weeks.
Anyways, car is not going to happen until I start working again, as much as I would like to. I also don't see any reason to join a gym anymore. I planned on doing it to get some "me" time, and work out agression. I have since really gotten into model airplanes, and find that fills the gap fine. Since quitting smoking I have a ton more energy, and my stress has gone down quite a bit. if I can find a job that is realatively close, I am going to buy a bike through. Good exercise, and cheaper then car insurance.
I keep putting off my ged. Maybe I'll set that up Monday. That is something that needs done.

You need to keep the acid reflux in check as it can seriously damage you esophagus, even cause cancer... I've basically had the same problem for the last 10 years, and live on Priolsec... One capsule keeps mine in check for 24 hours, if I skip it I'm dying in about 32-36hrs...

I don't take anything for it. I have cut back on soda, and that is all the doctor recommened unless I was in pain. Not saying he was right either though... I have just recently realized I avoid things with citric acid and spicy foods though. I am going to go see a doctor in the next month for a medical card, I'll have it checked out.

No real secret. When I go on a diet, I go on a diet, and I stay to it very strictly (Except my Friday Chinese Food, and even then I tend to stick to the lower fat offerings, nothing battered). I cut every unnecessary snack out, right down to the hot chocolate I used to have every morning (I don't drink coffee, so HC was my morning wakeup drink).
It helps to be a stubborn . As with most people I'll get an idea in my head and float it for ages, thinking "Someday I'll do this". The thing is I'll eventually have enough of those "Someday" thoughts, and when that "someday" comes I attack it with a passion. And anything at all can trigger that day - I'll just wake up one morning and say "This is the day". No preparation, no dreading, just "This is it". That's how I quit smoking years ago, it's how I got back into my trade after over a decade of being out of it due to a back injury even though occupational therapists told me I never would (the back is still bad but I live with the pain, which, by the way, decreases as my weight decreases), and it's how I lose weight.
Unfortunately, while my will power is strong as iron during the diet it can break down once the goal is achieved, hence the fact that I'm dieting again after losing 100 pounds just four years ago. So now my new plan with this diet includes a long term goal: Hit 185, then stay under 200. If I approach 200, diet again. It'll be much easier to lose a few pounds here and there than it is to drop 50 every few years...

Well, I have been slacking...
I started smoking again, just for the last week. I just threw away my pack, hopefully for good this time. I've had a lot of personal and divorce issues bothering me and I have been using smoking as a crutch. Been going several days without sleep again, I have to find away to vent stress without going back to smoking.
On the plus side, I start a new job Tuesday. Its only going to be $8, and if they decide to keep me, it goes up to $9. Its about 20 miles away too which is a good bit to drive, but this will take a lot of my time, and give me a bit of money. I just need to do something, I set a goal to not go back to work for less then $10 and hour, but I need the money. Where I'm still living at home for now, I don't need to work as much either.
Signed up for a ged class, going to schedle a start date Friday. Next week, and I have been accepted for a pell grant. I plan on starting school again this fall.
Now all I need to do is save up some money for a cougar, and esign up for a gym.
