Title: Replacement speakers
Post by: thunderjet302 on November 21, 2011, 03:51:29 PM
I'm planning on replacing the almost 25 year old speakers in my T-bird over the winter. I'm going to run 6"x9" speakers in the rear deck. I need some help on the following:

1. Are there any aftermarket speakers that fit in the front doors behind the stock grills?

2. What size are the front door speakers?

3. Does anyone know what speakers would be good to replace the stock 3" speakers in the dash?

I put some Kenwoods in the doors, I got them from BestBuy, they were 6.5 if I remember.  I bolted them in like the stock ones.  Only a couple or 3 holes lines up correctly but they were held in very solid.

I want to put some Kenwoods in the rear.  Will the 6x9 fit OK?

In the dash, I dont think it really matters alot.  Just put some inline filters to knock out the mids and bass from them.

i use memphis audio.. they make a lot of 'factory' sized spreakers, but in 2 way form (which is a million times better in my opinion). they're top quality speakers and aren't priced half bad

Do you already have the 6x9's?  I have an almost new set of jbl 5x7/6x8 2 ways I am looking to sell.  I had them in a 1997 Grand Marquis for a short time (4months) before I traded it off.  Pm me if interested, we can work out a price to ship or meet halfway.  I am in Bloomington/Normal.

The advantage of using these in the rear deck is that you would still be able to use your stock speaker grills and they should bolt right up in the stock location.

I remember buying some 6x8 pioneers and they just held in by a rubber strap that held the magnet under the deck, the grilles had nothing to do with the change.

BTW, I used a 600 watt amp in place of my football amp and it is an amazing difference in the clarity of the pioneers alone.

So it looks like:

6.5" round speakers in the front doors.
6"X8" speakers in the rear deck.
3.5" round speakers in the dash.

Any good speaker brand recommendations? Also do they make a filter or something I can use in-line with the dash speakers so they don't receive too much base and sound like ? Is there a wiring harness plug available so I don't have to cut the factory plug off?

brand - memphis or lanzar.. both top quality without a huge price tag
wiring harness plug - i doubt it.. highly doubt it

Crutchfield is a good place to look, reduced prices on this years models and speaker harnesses are included.

Did you keep the stock head unit?

Go to crutchfields website and search by your car, it shows what has been installed and worked for them plus they have adapters so you don't do any cutting. I did that with my car and door panel fit fine with the speakers they listed.

No, I needed RCA type amp out plugs to make it work. I used a scoshe (sp?) brand connector so there was ZERO splicing behind the radio, however my bird had the premium sound football amp with one common ground (vs each speaker having a + and - )

I cut the harness off of a junkyard stock amp, then ran each of the wires into the respective ports on my jenson amp to bypass the stock one. It was really a PITA considering it was trial and error to get the speakers to play anything with the aftermarket head unit.

BUT, the clarity with CD's and the sirius made it well worth it.
