Title: need measurements, 83-86 AND 87-88
Post by: Shadow on November 16, 2011, 02:58:24 AM
i need the measurements for 83-86 AND 87-88 upper and lower control arms if anyone has a set off the car or knows the measurements, i'd appreciate it if you could post them up :) .. need center of bolt hole to center of bolt hole.. i haven't got a clue if 4 eyed control arms are any different, so that's why i'm asking for both, if they're the same :p .. i lost the papers with my 87-88 measurements and want to build my uppers and lowers before pulling the stock 1's out either car.. i also want to build a new jig for mass producing these as i build mine, so any light shed on this subject is highly and greatly appreciated :)

They're the same.

I had to dig up my old numbers from however long ago it was when we did them.

Upper: 10-3/8"
Lower: 18-1/8"

Those *should* be right, but Tom can verify with his dimensions as well. The notes I have are from 12 years ago or so.

They were from when I was back @ Kenny Brown and we were building the prototypes for the arms they were making.  The dimensions were taken from some arms off one of my cars.  The dimension on the lowers might be off slightly, but we can verify with Tom's info.

Sounds like I would go with 18-1/6"  for the lowers :p

Tom, the only cars that got round bushings in the RLCAs were the EARLY Foxes.  I think even that was only on the Mustangs/Capris and Fairmont/Zephyrs.  Both of my '80 (Big) Box Cougars had oval bushings. The non-108" w/b Cougars from 80-82 (i.e. the non-XR-7's) were on the Fairmont platform, and *may* have had the round bushings in them, but I don't know.  The arms would be the same length center-to-center, regardless of whether the bushings were round or oval.

If you needed an adjustable on one or the other, I would at least use a heim on the uppers, but not the lowers.

that's what i was thinking tom, since you and chuck came up with 2 different measurements for the lowers.. but i wouldn't use a hiem, i'd go with a 'bushed' rod end like so:

The uppers are the better choice.  If you do the lower, put the rod end on the axle end of the arm.

If you go with fixed lowers, and adjustable uppers, the 1/16-1/8" difference in the lower measurements won't matter.

thanks to you both.. i'll make the uppers adjustable.. if guys want to use them at stock length, they can just shove a long bolt through their stock UCA's and adjust the new 1's accordingly.. and for the record, chuck, i know if i made the lowers adjustable, it would have to be on the axle end.. or else it would throw the coil spring into a bit of a bind ;)

Here is a picture of the Griggs Racing LCA's on my '83:

Here is a picture of the Global West UCA's on my '83:

Having the ability to square the rear end under the car and get it positioned dead center of the wheel well was very nice.  The car does have rear coil overs so there is no spring perch on the LCA's.

last night i was giving it some thought.. a standard 'bolt-in' set would be nice.. but there are guys who would like to have the option of adjustability on the lowers.. so i think i may be making a 2 different style prototypes.. i already made a fixed pair of both for my blue TC and i'm pretty satisfied with how they turned out, so those i have down pat.. the adjustables will just take a bit of measuring and playing to get perfect

Tom,

Agreed that a frame shop would use the holes in the subframes to square the car up.  I lined the rear up off the wheel wells and then cross measured back to the K-member to make sure I was +/- 1/8" like the Griggs instrucitons suggested.  I have a Griggs K-member which I squared to the car per the Griggs instructions so it should be all good.  I guess I should have provided a little more info so thanks for the catch.
