Title: Pulling Engine- do i have to remove hood?
Post by: mattg on September 09, 2011, 08:03:01 PM
1986 cougar with v8.    can I pull the engine and trans (as one piece) if hood is propped up as high as it can go?  Or do i have to remove the hood?  in its highest position the hood is just about perpendicular / straight up and down.

I'm guessing you might be able to get it out, but I found with the mustang, not having the hood in the way makes things a lot easier. If you mark the hinge positions before unbolting, it's usually pretty easy to line up!

Pull the hood. it's only four bolts, and it'll make things a LOT easier all around.

ok.  i figured it oughta come off.    wishful thinking......is why i asked.  i took a hood off another car one time and it took me forever to get it back on correctly.

Just scribe a line around the hinge onto the hood. That leaves you a traced guide line where to put the hood when you re-install it. Or use a Sharpie marker, grease pencil, whatever.

Whats the big deal with removing the hood its just 4 bolts I usually lay a heavy blanket on the roof and just lay the hood on the the blanket.

I don't think it's the pulling of the hood it's the lining back up that can sometimes be a PITA if you don't mark the hinges...

Engine and trans together? No won't work. Engine alone? Yes. How do I know? I did it. Easy.

Hood is off.  I marked it well.    In addition to the hood,  if I also remove the Johnson Rods,  should I mark what side they go on or are they fully interchangeable?

I marked it well.    also  the Johnson Rods,  ?

I got a mark on my Johnson rod once, its a long story.  Not in the sense you think I said it was long.

I mean I dont have a log.  "weak reference to Chevy C."

Still wanting to know what a Johnson rod is. I know what it sounds like, and hope I'm wrong.

i thought everyone knew the Johnson Rod gag.  sorry.  Maybe it is a regional thing.  I didn't mean to be a wise ass.    I've heard the following exchange countless times:      "I can't figure out what's wrong with this engine."      "no?  did you try adjusting the johnson rod?"        -It's a ficticious part that is critical to the function of every machine known to man.    Or-as in my case- for several years when I was little I thought the dip stick was called the johnson rod.........cause my father tricked me.  He'd always refer to the dipstick as the johnson rod.

I can pull my motor and t5 tranny out with a carb plate and tight on the chain on the lift arm. Had a whole 1/2" of room. Now that the hoods painted it will just be removed in the future. And when the motor comes out again it will be a two piece deal. I scratched a freshly painted tunnel in the engine bay with the shifter on the new TKO tranny :(  Live and learn. And next time Ill ask for help.

I pulled. Engine and tranny and placed back in with the hood and everything bolted on. Left the ac and ps bolted together hanging off the battery though. That was on a 87 bird, 5.0 aod.

Don't forget to pull the rad also, or you will likely poke a hole in it!! Yeah you can take the trans out attached to the motor, but it can be tricky not to wreck stuff.

Hey Vinnietbird, did you do the mass air conversion yourself? Got some nice stuff on your motor everything I'd put on!! Gonna try the new BBK intake though, not the single plane, but the SS-R open plenum version.

I've always pulled engines and trans. together, unless it's in a 4x4 truck, then I leave the transmission/x-case in.

Take the shifter off (if T5), and  sure drain tranny fluid beforehand...unless you don't mind a well lubed floor. (I mind.)
Radiator out, fan off, hood off, everything else left on engine, except for upper intake. Unbolt H pipe, headers stay on.
Easy stuff. I even left the starter wiring on until I had it past the fender, then disconnected it.
This was on my '88 Sport, btw.
