Title: How many pistons do you own?
Post by: Thunder Chicken on July 25, 2011, 01:54:07 PM
Yeah, I know, strange thread topic. I'm home sick and have been looking at Youtube videos of antique engines (I love watching them run, I love the sounds, etc) and I was thinking - back when these engines were made they were likely the only engine in an entire village, used to run water pumps, mills, generators, etc. It's hard to believe that what once would have been considered a miracle of engineering is now so ubiquitous that people own several and don't even think about them. And now they are at the beginning of becoming obsolete (it'll be a long time yet, but it will happen eventually).

So, with this lengthy and cold-medicine-fueled intro, I ask this: What have you all got for engines, and what's your total cylinder count?

Me:
2011 Sonata: 4
2005 300: 6
1999 Sonoma 4X4: 6
1997 Yamaha Vmax 600 snowmobile: 2
2005 Arctic Cat 450 ATV: 1
1987 Honda Fourtrax TRX350 ATV:1
2000 Honda XR250R dirt bike: 1
2006 MTD 13.5 horse lawn tractor: 1
MTD push mower: 1
Poulan weed whacker: 1
Honda 4000 PSI pressure washer: 1
Poulan Wild Thing 35CC 18" chainsaw: 1
No-name Chinese hole digger (auger): 1
Coleman 5800w generator: 1
Total: 28

That's a lot of pistons, especially when you consider how many of them come from single cylinder engines...

And that's what's actually running, mind you. I've also got a 4-bolt main Vortec 350 Chevy engine from my brother's old wrecked van and a 4.2 V6 from his old junked F150, both of which I'm trying to sell. With those 14 more cylinders my total count would be 42.

52 so far...I'm sure I could dig around in the junk shed and find some old pumps and stuff...and most of what I've listed run, or would only need a battery and fresh gas to run, except the Caprice...it needs an OptiSpark and new w/p.

On second thought, there's also 32 more pistons in my storage bin, two 5.0 blocks, and two 351w engines..all in pieces.

Jeezus...I got a lotta pistons...
And if Havi sees this thread...the '72 isn't mine, but it's a resident here, and it will easily spin the 33's that it sits on. hehehe

After reading this post it's just amazing when you think about it, isn't it? Some of those antique engines I'd mentioned above made 2 horsepower and weighed half a ton. Technology has brought them so far that we can hold a 2-stroke engine that belts out a couple of horsepower in the palm of our hand, and they're so light we think nothing of carrying them around (chainsaws, weed whackers, etc).

...and some people think the internal combustion engine has never evolved...

...and some people think the internal combustion engine has never evolved...

I encounter that thought a lot when talking to older folks...they get intrigued when I mention "Thunderbird"...they right off think of the '55-'56-'57 years..and forget there were 'Birds made after that.

They ask me what year it is...I tell 'em it's an '88. They go "hmmph." and I mention that it's got the Mustang's HO 5.0, and they all then insist those newfangled "injected fuels" engines aren't any good....

I have lots of respect and love for the Gen 1 birds....but a carb has no place on a modern car.
Amazing indeed that engines have evolved, but some folks are still stuck the Jurassic, so to speak.

Anywho, back to topic.

You only need to drive behind a classic car to appreciate how clean they've become. I was driving behind a 70's Corvette yesterday and I swear my new Sonata could have run off the unburned fuel coming out of that thing's tail pipes...
